Want to buy a boat?
The IDRA 14 is a two-person 14-foot sailing dinghy originally designed by George O'Brien Kennedy in 1938. His design was adopted by the Irish Dinghy Racing Association, forerunner of the Irish Sailing Association as the national dinghy class and the first boats were built in 1946. Today the original clinker built wooden boats sail on equal terms alongside the GRP (fibreglass) version of the boat. The boat is fourteen foot long and carries a sail plan of mainsail, jib, and spinnaker. The easily mastered trapeze allows the boat to be sailed effectively by crews of different shapes, sizes and abilities.
The class offers a friendly and active sailing, racing, training and social calendar in Dublin, sailing from Dun Laoghaire, Clontarf and Sutton as well as several "away" trips each year. The two-person boat offers exciting sailing with trapeze and spinnaker, at every level, from beginner to expert with good support and training for newcomers. IDRA sailors come from all walks of life and in all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities. The class believes that sailing is about having fun and wholeheartedly welcomes and encourages newcomers to the class.
Secondhand boats are available from as little as £500 for a boat needing some work to £1300 for a ready to race boat- please ask for a list. This year the IDRA 14 class is offering a free vetting service to help prospective buyers examine and value boats for sale. The class will make every possible effort to help new sailors get on the water in Clontarf and Dun Laoghaire. This will include free technical advice and help and an informative guide "The Rough Guide to the IDRA 14". Anyone wanting to commission a new IDRA 14 should contact the class, which owns a mould for making new boats. Even if you don't have a bean ask about our open days or ask to be placed on our crews' list - enthusiastic crews are always in demand, though some experience is necessary.
