Welcome to the Ireland yDNA Project

The Ireland yDNA Project (formerly Ireland Heritage yDNA Project) was set up in January 2006 at Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com), to cater for people who are using yDNA (y-chromosome DNA) testing to investigate their Irish roots.

Initially, there were very few surname projects so the Ireland yDNA Project filled this niche. Much has changed since the project was initially set up and there are now many surname projects available for people to join at Family Tree DNA. The co-administrators of the Ireland yDNA Project suggest to people that they join their relevant surname project as a high priority and to upload their results to Ysearch.

Despite the surge in the number of surname projects, the Ireland yDNA Project remains popular with people who want to affiliate with an Irish yDNA Project. The project has grown dramatically every year and by January 2009, it has well over 3,000 members and continues to grow. The Ireland yDNA Project is a useful project for those who are investigating their Irish roots and who may not be sure of where in Ireland their ancestors lived. We co-administrators encourage people to use traditional genealogical methods (where possible) in conjunction with yDNA testing.

There have been many developments in using DNA in genealogical research over the past number of years and this continues to be the case.  The Ireland yDNA Project endeavours to keep abreast of the developments in yDNA research, especially where they are relevant to people of Irish origins.

In 2008, Irish television produced some interesting genealogy programs and this continues in 2009 with the “Blood of the Irish” tv program. One of our goals in the Ireland yDNA Project,  is to encourage Irish-based males to get involved in yDNA testing. The Irish who live in Ireland can help their disconnected relatives find their roots by taking part in yDNA testing.

A new phase where Irish males do the mouth swab to help reconnect with the Irish abroad is the next step.
