We sang songs about freedom, we sang songs about love.

Gave the best to our county when push came to shove.

We knelt and we prayed and did all we‘re told

Hardly ever, hardly ever, hardly ever were bold.

While others went to war we went to Missions

And constantly said acts of contritions

We listened and learned from the lords of our Land

Call down fire and brimstone and tell us we‘re damned.

For this was our kingdom, our power, our gory

And nobody wrote a word of the story

That lay hidden and buried for everyone to see

Too busy, too busy going down on our knee.

We believed ourselves better ‘til we could bear it no more

Then jumped on a boat and sailed from the shore.

To England and Africa, New York and Japan

Arabia, New Deli we went as far as we can

Our hearts had a hunger our bellies had stout

We toiled and we slaved and we seldom gave out.

We built half the world but yet stood alone

Remembering, remembering, the others back home.

Then came the 60’s and someone asked “Why?”

How do we live and why do we cry?

Why do they tell us what to do and to say

Why can’t they leave us alone for a day

We signed up for Europe, cheap cars and more pay

The priest were pushed back while The Government said “Hey!

Look at us, look at us and all we can do

Never mind, never mind bite off more than you chew.”

The stout turned to lager as we holidayed and tanned

Our dreams to a mortgage and Goddo be damned.

We laughed and we laughed, thinking everything funny.

And it took us a while to run out of money

Now that we’re here and the priests had their chiding

The chips are all down and the coke is inviting

The young and the old their heads ‘r in the sand

If they think this ole Treaty doesn’t matter or stand

For all that we’ve been through we’re back where we started

Like a bunch of young kids tittering; “Who has just farted”?

We can’t see the divil cause he’s wearing nice clothes

But he’s ready to ride us, all he’ll says is “We’ve chose”

What do you say?.
