THE BOFIN COMMUNITY ARTS FESTIVAL
From the 9th to the 13th of September 1998, the third Inishbofin
Community Arts Festival took place. The first one was run in 1976 and the second one took
place in 1992. The main objective of the '98 Festival was to promote participation in the
arts among islanders and to celebrate the rich local tradition of music, storytelling,
song and dance. Direct proceeds from the festival went towards the running of
community development projects. The general economic benefit of arts and culture in terms
of tourism was also stressed as the Development Company sought to promote a more
targeted and sustainable approach to economic development other than that afforded by
untrammeled mass tourism. This festival programme rose to this challenge by providing a
rich mix of music, poetry, drama, painting, dance, story-telling, debate, community
pageant and parade. Involvement of locally-based artists and islanders was a feature
throughout the festival. The Development Company was excited at the prospect this
festival offered by way of community celebration, promotion of the arts and endorsing the
rich cultural and environmental heritage of the island of Inishbofin.

ARTS FESTIVAL WINS AWARD AND PRAISE
In what is a feather in Bofin's cap, at a ceremony in the Town Hall in Galway last Wednesday 24th of February, it was announced that the 1998 Inishbofin Arts Festival had won an award for excellence. Awards were presented to the most impressive public artistic endeavour in each of County Galway's five electoral divisions. The Inishbofin Festival in the Connemara electoral division beat off particularly strong competition from the much larger Clifden Arts Festival to take the award.
Presenting the award, the County Council Arts Office, said that distingushed the Bofin Festival was the range of events featured. It was a true festival of the arts, he said, with drama, poetry, exhibitions, cartoons, pageants and music of several varieties.
