Local History - Innishannon.

Sand Quay Site
.
The Bandon River offered the people of Innishannon an excellent transport facility. It was not unusual , on a fine summer's evening, to see a fleet of 20 to 30 sand boats (12 ton each) in full sail coming up the Bandon River with the tide to the Sand Quay at Innishannon. The sea sand was used to fertilize the fields. On their return journey down river these boats carried loads of turf, which was in plentiful supply in the Innishannon area.
