The Charter School |
||
To encourage apprentices to the linen industry Thomas Adderley supported the erection of a "Charter School " in Innishannon. This type of school was called a"charter" because, in 1733, the king of England had granted a charter to a group of gentlemen to set up schools in Ireland. Children of poor papists and other poor natives could go there and learn the english language and the principles of the Church of England Religion. These schools were not very successful and in 1832 state aid was withdrawn from all charter schools. | ||
