Chantal Kreviazuk

chantal kreviazukChantal Kreviazuk (whose first name derives from "to sing" in French), was born on the 18th of May, 1973 in Winnipeg, Canada; the country that spawned other singing beauties such as Shania Twain and Celine Dion. At the early age of three, she taught herself how to play the piano by watching her brothers. Even though she was a sheer natural when it came to the piano and music as a whole, it wasn't until Chantal turned 19 that she sat down and began to write the material that is now found on her debut album.

Chantal attended the University of Manitoba where she attended an Arts Studies program in the early 90's. While studying classical piano, the beautiful musician displayed a passion for pop music by secretly writing pop songs.Chantal Kreviazuk In 1994, her life took a turn for the worst after Chantal was in a serious motor accident in Italy, which resulted in a shattered jaw and a broken leg. Although recuperation from the accident was difficult, it was this event which ultimately led to Chantal's first album, Under These Rocks and Stones, since she sat down during her recovery, wrote songs and did a lot of life and soul searching introspection.

Chantal signed with Sony Music in 1996 and one year later, her debut album was released. Under These Rocks and Stones was recorded in Los Angeles and co-produced by people that have worked with musical legends such as James Taylor and 10,000 Maniacs. Chantal is credited for having written all but 2 of the 13 songs on the album. Not only did she write the songs, but Chantal was also responsible for the vocals, piano and keyboards on the album. Most of the songs reflect a positive attitude, except for the hit "Surrounded", written in memory of her first boyfriend who committed suicide.

Although her album was quality material and was well received by critics, Under These Rocks and Stones did not get the appreciation it deserved in terms of sales. Then in 1998, she recorded her own rendition of "Leaving On A Jet Plane" for the hit soundtrack of the blockbuster film Armageddon. Other soundtracks Chantal contributed to include Feels Like Home for the Dawson's Creek soundtrack, and the theme song for the hit NBC series Providence, where she covers The Beatles' song In My Life.

With appearances on Late Night With Conan O'Brian and Sarah McLachlan's hit concert lineup Lilith Fair, Chantal was getting the publicity she needed for her album to go platinum. She was getting the recognition she deserved and with the creation of a large fan base, it was clear that people were taking notice of the talented beauty. After a long period of touring and a creative drought, Chantal's second album was released, Colour Moving and Still in 1999.chantal kreviazuk The success of her second album proves that her fan base is not only present, but growing. This was an important year for Chantal, with her wedding to Our Lady Peace front man, fellow Canadian Raine Maida, who collaborated on the album with the production of "Before You" and "Dear Life", two singles off Colour Moving and Still. Chantal was also named "Female Singer of the Year" at the 2003 Juno Awards, Canada's version of the Grammys.
