The guest on this programme was Barbara Boyle, a free-lance wine writer.

*In Ireland we now drink, on average, ten litres of wine per year. The U.K drinks fifteen litres per head and in mainland European countries such as Italy and France the figure is around fifty or sixty litres per person per year.
*There are several different types of wine websites on the Internet. They include:business to business, e-zines, wine regions, wine travel sites, auctions, brokers and wine search engines.

*No single website dominates the sale of wine online in the way that amazon.com seem to dominate the sale of books. However, one of the bigger U.S. websites is

http://www.wine.com

The following websites are Australian:

http://www.wineplanet.com
http://www.winepros.com.au

In the case of wine Barbara predicts that local sites will be very important.

http://www.foodmad.com

http://www.oddbins.com

http://www.onthegrapevine.ie

http://www.bbr.co.uk
This is the Berry Brothers website. Although it is UK based they have a store in Dublin. You can search for wine by style.

http://www.slainteonline.com
They have a low delivery price.

http://www.bubblebrothers.com

http://www.wineonline.ie

http://www.irelandonwine.com

http://www.ewine.ie

International regions also have their own wine websites.

http://www.justdrinks.com

Popular wine e-zines include:

http://www.winetoday.com
Newspaper/magazine format. 'Reasonably independent.'

http://www.wineloverspage.com

http://www.robertparker.com

Dedicated wine search engines are useful for finding good wine websites:

http://www.winesearcher.com
(merchant directory, including some Irish merchants. Good if you're looking for a particular wine. This is a price comparison website. It is also Brabara's favourite website.)

http://www.vinosearch.com
(More general)

http://www.wine.about.com

Barbara also recommends the general search engine: http://www.google.com

This site organises online winetastings:

http://www.wine.co.za
