Malta |
This tournament ran from September 14th to the 19th.
The tournament was very successful. Cyprus, the hosts won the tournament, beating Moldova after a penalty shootout in the final. Great Britain came in third place with Armenia fourth. Éire came fifth and Malta were in sixth place.
Tomás Ó Brannagáin, the Irish captain, was the leading goalscorer of the Irish squad, with 28 goals. Tomás was also in the top ten of the tournament goalscoring charts. The victory over Malta in the 5th/6th place play-off match was the first victory by an Irish team in an EHF competition!! The squad included many players who had played in U-17 and U-21 Irish squads.
The Irish players and officials really enjoyed the experience and were absolutely delighted to win their first ever international match! They were exposed to a higher lever of handball than they usually experience in the league at home. This has improved the quality of the handball now being played here in Ireland.
The next Challenge Cup will be played in the year 2001.
