World Sports Acrobatics Symposium

Ghent, Belgium, 1999

The following are the suggestions from FIG, and may change. It is up to our federation to view this document, and any changes it feel should be added, will be sent to FIG. If you have any views on the attached, please feel free to send your comments to chairperson of acrobatics Mrs Marie Baker via s-mail or e-mail, mariebaker@eircom.net / irishacro@eircom.net or you may send them to the 'IG' Office via s-mail / e-mail, irishgymnastics@eircom.net

The FIG Council

The World Sports Acrobatics Symposium was held this year at the World Championships in Ghent, Belgium. This year the main agenda was to discuss and formalise the unity of IFSA with FIG. As a result of the amalgamation of IFSA into FIG there was a need to revise and update the Code of Points. The FIG wants to bring unity to the sport of gymnastics and so there should be a unity of the code. Other disciplines within FIG, have/or will be updating their codes and so Sports Acrobatics will do the same.

The Olympic Games

Sports Acrobatics will be presenting a gala display in Sydney 2000. This will be the start of our campaign to bring sports acrobatics into the Olympics. We had hoped that sports acrobatics would be introduced fully for the 2004 games in Athens, but now this seems to be an impossible feat. It has been pointed out that there will be no room in Athens for extra events, so the introduction of Sports Acrobatics will be introduced in 2008. The venue is not yet set, but looks like either Winnipeg or Oosaka. Also the disciplines have been set as men's group, women's group, and mixed pairs.

The World Games

The World Games, is an event that will be held every 4 years and will feature those events of gymnastics, which have not yet made it to the Olympics. They are held in the year following the Olympics, and so they are set for 16th August 2001 and will be held in Akita, Japan. The details of these events are laid out in the attached documents. The qualifiers for the World Games will be the World Championships to be held in Wroclav, Poland, 2000.

The New Judging / Coding System

The new code of points will be introduced in January 2001, and will feature a complete revision of the judging system, marking system and tables of difficulty.

The judging system will be taken from a score of 20. 10 marks will be awarded towards technical merit, 5 marks will be awarded towards difficulty, and 5 marks will be awarded towards ACP (Artistry, Composition, and Presentation).

Technical: A panel made up of 3 judges, and 1 CJP (co-ordinator for judge's panel) will judge this. The co-ordinator of judge's panel will take the role of arbitration over the 3 technical judges. The judges will deduct from a total of 10, and will deduct only technical faults. They will not be responsible for anything other than the actual technical execution of the moves within the routine.

Difficulty: The panel will consist of 2 difficulty judges. The difficulty will range from 0 - 5 and will be graded on a graph basis as shown in the diagram (see attached). There will be a different graph for the preliminaries and another for the finals. This will enable more acrobats to be able to compete at the worlds, but they will have to perform a greater difficulty to reach the finals

ACP: This will be judged by a panel of 2-3 judges and 1 CJP. The CJP will be the same person as in the Technical Panel. There will be 5 points awarded for CJP, and will take into consideration the structure of routines, the composition of the dance within, and how the routine is presented to the judges and audience.

Individuals: The individuals performed may now gain as many marks as performed, and will not be cut off at the now 1.0. Therefore, acrobats can perform as high a scoring individual and be awarded for it. Also, when calculating the total mark for the individual, the lowest value performed by one partner will be added along with all other partners values and then divided by the number of partners, thereby getting the average and not just the lowest.

For balance, there must be a value of at least 3, for tempo there must be a value of at least 5, and for the combined exercise there must be a value of at least 4 from balance and 4 from tempo.

It has been pointed out that one particular individual move will be downgraded. This is the Straight back to splits. It is currently valued at 8 but we should expect this to come down much lower.
