Over the years a number of members have been honoured:

I.A.S. Honourary Life Members

In October 2001 Eunan Murray, James O'Connor and Liam Smyth were granted Honorary Life Membership of the I.A.S. in recognition of 50 years membership and service through out those years.

At our Society Annual Dinner on Jan 25th 2002 they were presented with their certificates. In the photograph Eunan, Liam and James are at centre. Also shown are William Burns (Vice President), Michael Cummins (President), John O'Neill (Hon.Secretary) and Angela O'Connell (Hon.Treasurer).

Asteroid Names

9929 McConnell
John McConnell of Maghaberry, Co. Antrim was honoured by naming asteroid 9929 for him. A presentation took place on 17th September 2001 at Armagh Observatory. John is a noted Historian of Irish Astromony and a skilled Astrophotographer.

In the photograph John is at centre. Also in the photograph is James O'Connor (I.A.S., President) , Walter Martin (E.A.A.S.), Prof. Mark Bailey (Director, Armagh Obs.), Terry Moseley (I.A.A.), Dr. Alan Fitzsimmons (Q.U.B.) and John O'Neill (I.A.S., Hon. Secretary).

Terry Moseley of Glengormley, Co. Antrim was honoured by naming asteroid 16693 for him. A presentation took place on 15th January 2003 at Armagh Observatory. Terry is a enthusiastic active Observer particularly of the Planets, editor of "Stardust", and President of the I.A.A. & I.F.A.S.

Alan Sims

Alan V. Sims (1920-1995), was Chairman of the Irish Astronomical Society (Dublin Centre). He contributed extensively to Orbit and provided many talks to our lecture programme. His lectures, always meticulously researched, usually dealt with the lives of great astronomers and theoreticians of the past, such as Galileo, Newton, Horrocks and Herschel. He was a keen observer and was Director of Observations for a considerable period. He was also Editor of ORBIT for a time.

On his retirement he moved to Bath in England. He was also Sectretary and later vice-Chairman of the William Herschel Society and was an authority on the famous astronomer himself.

Chernobyl Award for Society

alcon At ALCON in Arligton, Texas, USA, J. Kelly Beatty, Executive Editor of Sky & Telescope presents IAS President Deirdre Kelleghan with the Honourable Mention Certificate for the IAS at the Astronomy Day 2006 Awards night dinner.

Award from the Astronomical League in the USA for the Society, for IAS Public Star Party "Sun, Moon & Stars for Chernobyl" on 5th & 6th May 2006 at Sandymount seafront, Dublin.
