The IUSWA oversees the running of two domestic swimming and water-polo championships each year -

Freshers Intervarsities is normally held on the second weekend of November each year. Member institutes take turns in hosting the competition. At Freshers, swimming events can only be entered by those registered IUSWA members who have never competed at a previous intervarsity swimming or water-polo championship. The water-polo teams, however, are not resticted by this aforementioned rule.

Senior Intervarsities is normally held on the second weekend of February each year. Again, member institutes take turns in hosting the competition. At Senior Intervarsities, any registered IUSWA member can compete for their respective club in both the swimming and water-polo disciplines.

The IUSWA also organises the Irish representative side that competes in the annual Celtic Nations competition. In addition, every third year Ireland hosts the Celtic Nations competition which sees the IUSWA as organisers.

The World University Games is the second largest multi-sport event in the world, behind only the Olympic Games. The WUG takes place every second year and attracts some of the world's top student athletes. Irish university swimming has been well represented at the last number of WUG.
