THE FUTURE FOR COLLABORATION
by Gina Mensies, Chair, Lay& Jesuits Together Committee.

The Jesuit Province is looking to the future of collaborative ministry with lay people. Already, in many of the Province's works, partnerships between Jesuits and lay collaborators are in progress. This initiative responds to new and radical models of church envisioned in Vatican II and reflected in Jesuit documents.
Jesuit Province Day, this year, will focus on new models of collaboration.
On Saturday, June 7th, 2003 all those interested in this venture are invited to come to Clongowes Wood College, Kildare to consider progress to date and to image new models for the future.
Father Provincial, Gerry O' Hanlon SJ will reflect on the current situation in the Province. There will be contributions from people already engaged in works in the Province. Together with other co- workers, lay and Jesuit, we will image future models of collaboration for the Irish Province.
The day will begin at 10.00 a.m. and conclude with Eucharist and Dinner at 5.30.p.m.
Anyone who would like to be there on June 7th is invited to contact Julie Ward at education@s-j.ie or John Dunne S.J. at socius@-s-j.ie for more detailed information.
We would like all those who care about Jesuit involvement in the future of the Irish church and life to come along and be heard.

The Provincial of China, Fr. Beda Liu Chia'cheng, will be on a short visit here in May. He will be happy to outline 'things China' at a meeting for interested Lay and Jay people in Milltown Park on Wednesday May 14th. @ 8.00 p.m. Welcome all.

Brendan McManus S.J. reminds us of the availability to Lay or Jay of his mother's holiday home in Strandhill, Co. Sligo for those who are thinking of a retreat, some quiet time, or bringing away a small group, or anyway to boost the spiritual life. It is a 6 year old bungalow with 6 beds, very close to the sea and good walks, self-catering, no TV!!, very secluded and ideal for getting away from it all. The cost is 100 euro per week or 50 euro for a weekend. All esquires to Brendan, who is looking after the administration of the house, at Leinster Rd. Community; 497-0250 or bmcmanus@s-j.ie

Fr. General has appointed Fr. Francois-Xavier Dumortier as Provincial of France and Fr. Antoine Kerhuel as Vice Provincial of the Southern part of France. Both will begin their mandate in mid August 2003.
As a general piece of knowledge France is one province, two vice-provinces, north and south, [the northern Vice Provincial is Henri Aubert]. There are 667 French Jesuits

The superiors of our Communities had an enjoyable weekend at Mount St. Anne's, Killenard, Co. Laois. The theme was " How can we Live in Consolation in a Diminishing Province". We tried to name the desolations like the war, lack of vocations, child sexual abuse, difficulties with Church, withdrawal from some ministries, aging membership and so forth. While answers to cope are not simple, they are to be found in our Ignatian spirituality.

Windows on Social Spirituality

By The Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice
CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY is social - it is about how we live our life in society and has implications for our relationships and for our actions in the personal, social, political, and religious spheres. Within the framework of a Christian understanding, the contributors to this book consider social dimensions of spirituality as part of the response to the search for a more just world.

  * Spain: A Jesuit in jail

On the night of 19 February, Txema Auzmendi SJ was arrested along with nine other people, as part of a police operation in the Basque Country (Euskadi). Fr. Auzmendi, Superior of the Community of Solidarity "Loiolaetxea" in San Sebastian, is actively engaged in establishing opportunities of dialogue to solve the conflict in the Basque Country, and in defending and promoting Basque culture. The reason for Fr. Auzmendi's arrest is that he is a member of the board of directors of "Egunkaria," the only newspaper wholly published in Euskera, the Basque language, and which is allegedly connected to ETA. His arrest fell under the anti-terrorist law and, as a result, he spent five days in police custody without legal assistance, cut off from any communication with the outside world. Under these conditions, he refused to make any declaration, unable, as he was, to secure legal protection from a lawyer of his choice. The judge accused him of alleged collaboration with an armed group and sentenced him to imprisonment. Eventually, after receiving assistance from his lawyer, Fr. Auzmendi petitioned for the right to submit a declaration, and after a few days, on 14 March, he was released on bail. He is presently back in his community, full of hope and in good spirits. He describes his days in detention as extremely hard, but says that he lived in peace, feeling Jesus' presence and company, and "in communion with all those Jesuits who, in the course of history, have been unjustly jailed."
