Brian Grogan, President of the Milltown Institute, updates 'UPDATE'

Strategic Alliances
Negotiations continue with NUI/UCD and with Kimmage Mission Institute. A Statement of Intent is being prepared for the former, indicating where MI is at, and where it desires to be in the future. A key issue is how to respect both the ethos of MI and the NUI requirement that the civil reality of the Recognize College be clearly established. Ethos is safeguarded by the 1997 Universities Act, so it should be possible to reach agreement on the issue.
Since the challenge to maintain Catholic ethos is a worldwide one, help has been sought on how to do it from as far away as Australia. A brother-in-law of the McGuckians took time out from a busy schedule to visit us on Holy Thursday: Muredach Dynan of the Catholic University of Australia has first hand knowledge of the tension between Catholic ethos and State-funded education, and enlightened us on how to hold to our principles.
A related issue is that our current Statutes were written for the Pontifical side of MI: but today, given the decline in clerical vocations, only about 20 full time students are seeking Pontifical awards (Bacc Phil, BD and a few others). The overwhelming majority of students, both full and part time, want civil awards, and appropriate structures are required to acknowledge this reality.

Centenary Conferences
I mentioned in an earlier bulletin of the Institute's intention next year to commemorate B Lonergan and K Rahner, both born in 1904. An attentive reader has pointed out that Yves Congar OP was also born in 1904 (as was J C Murray SJ), so plans are now under way to hold a Conference for the Dominican, perhaps in Spring 2004.

Abidjan Theologate
Leo Amani SJ of Tanzania visited the Institute when term resumed after Easter. He did Philosophy here about 1980, and became Novice Director in 1992. One hundred and fifty three novices passed through his hands over eleven years, as against eight during my seven years in the same post! He has now been assigned to head up a new French-speaking theologate in Abidjan, with an intended enrollment of 20 scholastics per year. He has been touring likely places seeking for the new foundation Brains, Books and Bucks, as an American pithily put it. Hence his trip to Ireland. We wish him well in facing into this challenging enterprise.

New Book

Liturgy in a Postmodern World'
by Keith Pecklers S.J.

This book grapples with the future of liturgy at a time of exceptional confusion and uncertainty in the Christian Churches.
Christian renewal must always be liturgical renewal, as this book sets out to demonstrate. In response to this, a conference was assembled in Rome in the summer of 2002 with papers from the brightest and most imaginative liturgical scholars in the world. This book is the result.

Look up this Web page for some photos of these houses Please let me know if it should be continued. http://homepage.eircom.net/~jadsj
