"Working with others to light a candle."

Parents' Council
You are aware of the many changes taking place in Education these days. The Education and
Children Welfare Laws are just a small selection. And we need parents to be involved in the life of
the school, not least to get the information to parents, and in the many ways which parents help
out in the life of the school.
We want you at the meeting on Wed. 16th Feb. @ 7.30pm in the Secondary School.
I know it clashes with your favourite soap ... Please use the Recorder that night, and meet us on
this one.
We have some names of parents, but we would love representatives from each year. Don't expect
someone else to make the decisions for you.

Soup Mornings
The Soup Mornings are still taking place on Mondays for first year students. All is well received.
We have some parents who give valuable help in organising this.

Mentoring Programme
This is a programme whereby students and personnel from the Ulster Bank meet every three
weeks or so to discuss issues related to studies and career. Each student is assigned a mentor.
Currently there are about thirteen students taking part. Reports indicate that the students are
enjoying the help they are getting from the mentors.
Adult Courses
With this newsletter there is a fine list of courses which we are able to offer adults. There are great
courses on the list, so, Please look carefully at them and if you believe that the Millennium, (I dare
use this when many have forgotten about it.) is your year, not to propose, but to do the course
you've always believed you wanted to... Complete the form and return it to our office.
If you don't venture ... you'll never know what you can do!

Talks for Parents
The following talks should be of special interest to parents. They are being held in Liberties
College, Bull Alley
, beside St. Patrick's Cathedral.
"Self-Esteem" by Tom Humphreys. on Wed. 1st March @ 8.00pm. and
"What Parents need to know about Alcohol and Young People" by Dr. Mark Morgan on Mon.
3rd April @ 8.00pm.
Well worth attending, see you there.

Drugs' Awareness Day.
We have declared this to be Fri. 11th Feb. We have some people from C.R.E.W. Network who are
based in Maynooth give talks to the students on topics related to drugs and drug-taking. It is a
very important issue for parents and young people today, you'll agree.

Computer Rooms
Note, we said 'rooms'. Yes, one room is in use already, with the students learning to type and do
nice presentations of work. We hope the other room with a chance to use the Internet, etc. will be
ready for use soon. We believe our students deserve the best, so thanks to some very generous
people we can offer it now to them.

Links Committee
This group of people in the local area who are concerned with developing ties between the
schools and a number of local organisations and groups. Issues discussed relate to what can
benefit the local families and schools.
You are aware of the work ongoing to get a Family Centre in the area. It will be so good to have a
place where people can meet to socialise, to plan, have their own courses, to get and give support
to local initiatives. It will also give a people a place to organise talks, courses, etc.

Study Club
this is for sixth year students- who travel to the D.I.T. in Aungier Street where they meet up with a
college student for a study period.

Bereavement
We know many of you and our students have had to deal with loss of a parent, or a relative or
friend. We hope to have some information in our next letter.
