Guidance and Counselling

C. B. S. James's Street is allocated eleven hours for Guidance and
Counselling by the Department of Education and Science. The christian
brothers' philosophy is that such an important service requires more time.
Another part-time counsellor is provided by the brothers. Both these
counsellors work closely with the home-school office. A counsellor meets
each pupil in first year and their parents.
The two counsellors work with the class tutors to help the pupils make a
successful transition from primary to secondary school. Throughout the
junior years a pupil will see a counsellor as he wishes or as need arises.
Senior pupils can choose to see whichever counsellor as and if they wish.
Because
of time constraints career guidance is confined to fifth and sixth year pupils.

Academic and Financial Supports.

Our school is part of several schemes that provide help and support for the
pupils. The school was chosen to join the Trinity Access Project when this
project began six years ago. Among the supports offered are scholarships
to certain faculties in T.C.D. ; access to reserved places in Trinity and other
third level colleges; financial awards for competitions run by Trinity and the
school; special open evenings for pupils and parents; support teaching for
pupils;extra finance for the school.
Another beneficial scheme is the Dublin Schools' Business Partnership by
which we are linked to five companies of the Dublin Chamber of
Commerce. These companies give of their expertise to help the students
prepare for examinations and for entry to the world of work. Two companies
– Bank of Ireland and Golden Pages have provided very generous
scholarships for our pupils. Other benefits of the D.S.B.P. are the Mentoring
Programme and the Dale Carnegie Public Speaking course for fifth year
pupils.
Jamebo is also involved in a study programme in D.I.T. Aungier. Volunteer
third level students provide one-to-one tutoring for the sixth years once a
week for two terms. Another aspect of this link is the help with study and
examination techniques by the students and staff members of the D.I.T. and
the great opportunity given to our pupils on special tours of the colleges –
Aungier Street and Kevin Street.
Two of the independent colleges – Portobello College and L.S.B.College
also provide two scholarship places each for pupils from the school to go
on to third level each year.
