Large tracts of commercial bogland attracted Bord na Mona to the region c.1947 but BNM terminated production c.1992. Galway County Development Plan doesn't consider Attymon a region of natural beauty - preferring instead to classify it as "suitable for population growth" due to its proximity to Galway City - and with inferior tracts becoming woodland!
