Unimog Brakelights

Unimog 404's like mine show both amber lights to the rear when braking. If you happen to be signalling while braking, one amber light flashes while one stays lighting continuously. This set-up may have been acceptable for military road use in the 50's and 60's when these Mogs were current, but in modern traffic conditions it expects a lot from the driver behind, and there is a real risk of being tail-ended. I decided to fit brakelights to operate independently of the amber lights, and leave those for signalling only.

I was able to find new-old-stock Bosch lights in a local agricultural equipment dealers, and these are now fitted to brackets attached to the two rear equipment lockers. I disconnected the wire from the mastercylinder switch and taped it up safely. A new wire from the switch now activates a 24 volt relay which turns on the brake lights. The supply to the lights runs through a spare fuseholder in the main fuse array.

These lights are really bright and eye-catching - just the effect I wanted. They are positioned so as not to interfere with the operation of the boarding ladders on each side. Only time will tell if they are successful in preventing a rear-end shunt.

This is the relay, bolted down to a pre-existing tapped captive nut. The blue wire going down between the fuseholders is going to the new lights. The brown wire looping to earth under a nearby nut is the earth for the firing circuit. The paralell blue wires fire the relay and supply the main circuit with current.
