Venice

This is a selection of photographs taken during a five day stay in this remarkable city in March 2002. There is no specific theme other than to record a brief profile of Venice as I saw it.

All of the photographs were made with the remarkable and sadly discontinued Olympus E-10 digital camera.

The gondolas gently move about in the ripples on the Lagoon and seem almost to assume a lifelike motion and character of their own.

This annual event on Liberation Day, which is also the Festa di San Marco, presents a view of the gondola which contrasts with the familiar one while at the same time it reflects the fun loving nature of the Viennese. Each coloured gondola represents one of the regions of Venice so the race while essentially a fun event is the subject of great rivalry between the regions.

One of the quieter hidden stretches of canal in Venice. The reflections just could not be missed.

A gondola moves slowly and quietly through one of the narrower canals in Venice. Note the asymmetrical shape of the gondola's hull which is designed to counteract the force of the oar on one side only. The measurement from the bow to stern centre line to the side is greater on the left side by 24 cm. (9.5 inches). Otherwise the gondola would merely go round in circles. (ref. Eyewitness Travel Guides - Venice and the Veneto.) The skill of the gondoliers in navigating through the narrow canals in matched only by their skill to negotiate fares.

We took a stroll at dusk on our first evening in Venice and this was our first glimpse of the Dogana di Mare and the church of Santa Maria della Salute at the mouth of the Grand Canal. Thanks to fine weather in late April the gondoliers are preparing for a busy night.

One of those irresistible camera moments in a quiet corner of Venice along the Riva dei Sette Martiri. The woman appeared from a doorway at the moment of taking the shot. I waited for her to go out of camera shot before re-taking the picture but found at selection that she adds an essential life element to the composition.
