The Eye Examination

It is very important your optician knows why you are having your eyes examined e.g. Is it just a routine check-up or is it for a specific reason such as VDU screening. If it is due to you experiencing problems with your eyes or vision your practitioner will need to know what symptoms you have, how long you have had them and whether the changes have happened suddenly or slowly or over a period of time.

Medical History
Your practitioner will need to know if you are taking any medication and other general health information such as whether you suffer from headaches, currently wear spectacles or contact lenses or have any close relatives with a history of eye problems like Diabetes or Glaucoma.

Examining the Eye
Your eyes will be examined both internally and externally. This will enable an assessment to be made of the general health of your eyes and identify any underlying medical problems.

Vision
Measurements are taken of your vision without any spectacles or lenses in front of the eye to assess the extent of any visual error. You will be asked to make choices between lenses and the effect the lenses are having on the quality of your vision.

Eye- movements and Co-ordination
It is essential that these be checked to make sure that both eyes are working together effectively, and that undue stress is not being placed on the muscles. This is particularly important for VDU users and drivers.

Lifestyle
Additional information about hobbies and work will help your practitioner to make informed decisions about the tyoe of frames and lenses that will give you the most useful type of correction.
