In Ireland an English sounding or foreign looking surname, often conceals one of Gaelic origin. Grannell is one such name and a fine example of a genuine Gaelic family . This phenomenon of Irish surnames hidden under an alien guise is in Ireland extremely common.

The majority of the descendants, of the 'Mac Grannell's of Muinter Eolais' now have the surname Reynolds.
