About the author...
John Joyce,
historian, author, artist and retired businessman, is a native of
Graiguenamanagh, County Kilkenny where, in the house once occupied
by General Thomas Cloney of 1798 fame, he has lived for the greater
part of his life. Over the years, John has combined an active career
in business and a close involvement in community affairs with an
abiding interest in sports and the arts
|
His life-long interest
in history has resulted in the publication of a number of articles
in historical journals and the penning of two successful books "General
Thomas Cloney - Wexford Rebel of 1798" and the history of
his native place "Graiguenamanagh - A Town and it's
People".
|
Over the years since
this latter work was published, having gathered together much
additional information regarding the story of that lovely and
historic part of the Barrow Valley, the author has included accounts
of these events in the recently published, revised and expanded,
second edition of the book, to which an index has also been added.
|
John is a founder
member of the Barrow Valley Group of Painters and is an accomplished
watercolourist whose ongoing studio exhibition attracts many

GRAIGUENAMANAGH
- a town and its people
An
historical and social account of the town of
Graiguenamanagh/Tinnahinch from earliest times, with
extensive notices of its prominent personalities, families,
institutions and traditions. The book gives a lively
portrayal of the ebb and flow of history through a small but
vibrant river and canal town on the Kilkenny/Carlow border.
‘ Not
just a history but a story packed with human interest’
Ireland of the Welcomes.
"a lovely and loving account of one of
those beautiful riverside places that grace the fastness of a
long settled country with gentle hills, loved and graceful
ruins, old bridges, fine homes, deep rooted families, and that
odd well remembered tale or two from the past".
New Ross Standard
"an outstanding and
delicious meal spiced by old photos, sketches, maps. It is
packed with river lore, the vivid stories of the living
Barrow, the tithe war, sacrilege, scandals and abductions.
...This is a distinguished contribution".
New Ross Standard.
Kilkenny People
"Springing from the greatest of Ireland’s
medieval Cistercian monasteries, Graiguenamanagh’s growth
and the ebb and flow of history through this vibrant river and
canal town are portrayed here in a lively and expressive
fashion. There are many fascinating facets to the work
which should be read by anyone with a love of local history or
their own place"
