Counselling as a journey

The story of the self, I like that idea, we all have a story to tell, but how often are we really listened to. Our stories are in effect journeys of the self. As a counsellor I follow the person on their journey giving support when it is needed but not interfering, this is the person's journey not mine.

As a counsellor I do not give advice, I am there when the person is ready to make their own choices. Sometimes the journey is difficult and painful, but I have laughed with people as well. Our stories are diverse, complex and filled with opportunities for change that is the hope we live in. "Change of perspective, of circumstances, of behaviour, of coping ability. If people are not satisfied with their lives as they are, they look for a different tomorrow. They are searching for change".

The counsellor helps the person to identify choices for the future and supports their implementation. If the desired changes do not lie within the persont's capability, then these are not viable choices.

The aim of the counsellor is to help people recognise how they would realistically like their lives to be, and then help them actualise or achieve these aims. In a situation which cannot be changed, then the change consists in adjusting to the new circumstances".
