What is counselling |

| What is counselling you might ask? From my experience as both a counsellor and a client (as part of my training I was required to attend group therapy, and personal therapy). Counselling provides a valuable space for an individual to explore their issues in a safe and supportive environment. | ||||
| "The area of psychotherapy is diverse, sometimes confusing and often poorly understood. Since the 1970s, Ireland has seen a steady growth in the range and availability of psychotherapy services. More people have been prepared to avail of these services and the stigma formerly associated with being a patient or a client has greatly lessened. The diverse nature of psychotherapy, however and the differences between the various schools or approaches, makes for confusion and for difficulties in choosing from among the various practitioners". | ||||
| "As Micheal O Reagan of the Institute for psychosynthesis points out, there are many ways of telling the story of the self-of what it means to be a person. As in any story the starting point and context are important". 1. Extracts from Psychotherapy in Ireland the Columba Press, Edited by Edward Boyne. | ||||
| "Change of perspective, of circumstances, of behaviour, of coping ability. If people are not satisfied with their lives as they are, they look for a different tomorrow. They are searching for change". The counsellor helps the client to identify choices for the future and supports their implementation. If the desired changes do not lie within the client's capability, then these are not viable choices. The aim of the counsellor is to help clients recognise how they would realistically like their lives to be, and then help them actualise or achieve these aims. In a situation which cannot be changed, for example when someone close to our client has died, then the change consists in adjusting to the new circumstances".
