As the football league gets under way, St.John of God school Islandbridge,
begins the new season as defending league champions, having won
the cup last year 2000-2001.
Islandbridge also won the cup two years ago 1998-99. This was an
occasion of great excitement and a real sense of achievement because
it was our first time to win the cup in the history of the league,
which is in existence for about thirty years.
As the league commences and the date of our first match approaches,
our pupils are full of anxious anticipation, enquiring and questioning
about teams, fixtures and venues. Our first game will be against
St.Michaels's house, Raheny, Dublin, who were the only team to beat
us last year. On this occasion we are really keen to perform well
and to make a good start to the campaign.
There are currently nine schools participating in the league. These
schools are situated in the Leinster region (east coast), and while
the majority are in Dublin City, there are a number of schools in
neighbouring counties, such as, St.Annes, Newbridge, Co.Kildare,
about thirty miles away; St.John Of God, Drumear, Co.Louth,
roughly fifty miles; and St.Mary's, Navan, Co.Meath, approximately,
thirty miles from Dublin.
The games are played on a home and away basis, and this affords
staff and pupils the opportunity to visit other schools, establish
contacts an develop relationships. The league games are enjoyable
occasions and also have a very important personal/social dimension,
such as, fostering a good attitude, developing respect for others,
for rules, and a sense of fair play, encouraging interest and motivation;
building team spirit commitment and character, and responding appropriately
to winning and losing.
Football is always a popular topic of conversation. Many of our
pupils have a great interest in soccer, following clubs in the English
Premership, and they also enjoy watching the international games
on television - especially as the World cup approaches.
This year, unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Ronan Cahill,
who left school last June. Ronan was one of the best goalkeepers
we ever had and we will miss him very much this season.
Playing on the football team this year are, Davis Deane, Michael
Doyle, Denis O'Hanlon, Davis Murry, Mark Gaffney, Michael Hardiman
and Des Mooney. A number of young players have been added to our
panel, including David Mulligan, Derek Nolan, Brendan Roche and
Shane Ward. These pupils have only recently joined our football
training sessions.
New Members are always required as each year among the school leaver's
group, we lose one or two of our football players. We look forward
to a good season ahead and hope that Islandbridge retain the Cup
in 2002.
