Borris - A Small Village in Ireland

Borris, population under one thousand. This little book will give you a guided tour of Borris, a typical village in rural Ireland. As you find out about Borris, you will also find out about rural Ireland.

Where Borris is in Ireland Borris is a small village with a population of less than a thousand. It is in the 'Sunny South East' of Ireland, right by the Blackstairs Mountains, in the county of Carlow.

In many ways Borris is like England was forty years ago, and that is part of its charm. The local shops thrive despite supermarkets in the surrounding towns of Kilkenny, Carlow and Enniscorthy. Bread still comes wrapped in waxed paper, which I only remember in England from my childhood.

Here's what you will see on a walk through Borris, it's only really got one street.

The disused railway bridge makes a great spot for a picknick Starting from the old stone railway bridge at the bottom of Borris...

Borris Main Street.
...you walk uphill for a quarter of a mile or so along the main street, past the shops, church, school and pubs...

The entrance to Borris House, ancestoral home of the Kavanaghs ...until you come to Borris House, the ancestral home of the Kavanaghs, at the top of Borris.

That's probably all you'll see of Borris if you pass through. But if you explore Borris, by clicking the tabs at the top of this page, you might be surprised at what you discover.
