RD350 LC

YPVS logo Next came another mouth full of initials. The LC2 was the first YPVS, or 'powervalve', model. Again it came in 350cc and 250cc sizes.

YPVS stands for "Yamaha Power Valve System". It is not a valve ! It is a solid piece of metal which blocks the top of the exhaust port at low rpm, and is raised out of the way at high rpm. This increases the driveability at low rpm but does nothing for maximum power. Yamaha loved the incredibly contrived initials so much that they carved them in big letters on the cylinder head of this and all subsequent models. The letters were often repeated on the bodywork, too.

The engine power was significantly increased, mainly due to a new exhaust and to an improved engine port layout. Taken together with chassis and brake improvements, this was another quantum leap. But it was the last big leap for Elsie. All later changes focus on meeting stricter environmental regulations rather than increasing performance.

The engine numbers on the LC2 started with 31K, so ... you guessed it ... the LC2 is often called a 31K by enthusiasts.

The LC2 and subsequent models were marketed as the RZ350 rather than the RD350 in many countries, but they were the same bike. There were also many regional variations to suit local regulations, often with very restricted power.
