Discovery Apples   14" x 12"

Red Apples by John Penfold Ballyine Borris Ireland This is an apple tree that I planted last year, and this Autumn was the first time I saw fruit on it. I couldn't believe how red the apples are. They really do look like this. To convince people, I took one of the apples with me when I exhibited the painting. It still had leaves on it and all. Even so, the first lady I handed it to said "Of course, it's a wax apple." I ended up letting someone eat it and feeling a bit like one of those horrible adverts demonstrating the latest miracle cleaner.

To convince you, not that you need convincing of course, I've put a photo of one of the apples here.

The apples were my version of still life. I've seen plenty of pictures of apples in bowls, and they always look a bit dry and stale, so I thought they would look crisper and juicier on the tree.
