This coin is a proof striking of the 1966 commorative ten shilling piece.

This coin was issued in 1966 on the fiftieth anniversary of the Easter Rising in 1916.

The edge of the coin is inscribed in incuse lettering : eiri amac na casca - 1916

These coins were issued in a green leatherette case with a black felt setting and a white lining - the case is not marked but the interior lining is printed with a black harp. Coins in their cases are generally worth more than loose examples.

A smaller number of twin sets were issued in larger but otherwise similar cases which allow an obverse and a reverse to be displayed together - the twin sets command a small premium over a pair of single cases.

This coin is in proof condition it has clear fields witha mirror finish and it has frosted areas on the devices for contrast. However it has some uneven toning on the reverse and some minor abrasions on the obverse rums at 9-10 o'clock.

50,000 of these coins were struck in proof quality so they are still readily available and inexpensive. As well as examining the coin a collector should examine the case for signs of rust staining in the lining.

The original packaging for the case was a brown corrugated cardboard wrap which fitted snugly inside a brown corrugated cardboard slip case. These proof coins are occasionally sold in the complete original packaging.
