Copper Issues of George III 1766 - 1782

This coinage is effectively a continuation of the Regal copper coinage of George II. The coins were struck in London and are well made and of good weight.

There are two types, the key difference being the style of the bust.

This issue, especially the second type was copied very widely for circulation in Ireland and North America. The contemproary copies of this coinage are also quite collectable.

In order to avoid the severe penalties of counterfeiting many of the contemporary copies of these coins have legends which are different from the original.

Because there is a wide variety of legends a collection of these contemporary copies would be much more extensive than a collection of the original pieces.

These coins are readily available in Extremely Fine condition and pieces in Uncirculated condition with considerable mint lustre do appear quite often for 1775 and the 1780s dates.

Pieces dated 1783 are contemporary copies.

* This issue is normally struck in coin orientation i.e. the reverse is upside down. The 1782 issue also occurs in a medal orientation i.e. the obverse and reverse are the same way up. I have also seen coins which exibit other die orientations such as 90 degrees, but I believe that all of these have been contemporary forgeries.

Silver Bank Token Issues of George III 1804 - 1813

The Bank of Ireland produced a coinage between 1804 and 1813 comprising several denominations.

The 1804 six shillings piece was struck in Birminghan by Boulton and the other issues were struck in the English Mint in London.

The act authorising the 1805 five and ten pence pieces was specific as to the date so when the 1806 pieces were struck they were technically illegal - the solution adopted was to revert to striking the coins dated 1805 for the remainder of the issue (until about 1808).

The 1804 six shillings pieces were struck on Spanish-American 8 real pieces and the undertype is occasionally visible. The specimen strikings were struck on prepared blanks so they do not normally exhibit remnants of an underytype. There are many varieties of the 1804 six shilling piece, I have not yet listed then below.

The 1808 thirty pence piece is particularly difficult to obtain well struck, examples in EF or better condition with a well struck up bust will command a premium price.

The 1805, 1806 and 1808 issues often exhibit flaws or small impurities in the metal. The prices below are for coins without disfiguring flaws. This is partucularly true for the commoner small denominations.

** 1813 Proof Ten Pence - The currency strikings of 1813 ten pence pieces in unirculated condition often exhibit considerable frosting on the bust and have excellent surfaces. The proof striking is from very polished dies and has a very strong rim. The proof striking is rare whereas uncirculated currency strikings are quite common. Nice uncirculated pieces have occasionally been bought and sold as proof strikings. This coinage was demonetised in 1817 - which explains the availability of good quality examples.
