This coin is a pattern threepence prepared by Publio Morbiducci for submission to the contest for the coinage of the Irish free state in 1927. This coin is struck in copper with a plain edge - Threepences also occur in silvered copper and in nickel silver. It is interesting to note that Morbiducci used the 'leath' spelling with the final 'h' rather than the older spelling with the leat with a dot (builte) above the 't' which was used on the issued coinage see : Proof Threepence - 1950 for comparison. This coin is in Uncirculated condition - not surprising as it was never issued - however it has toned heavily and has some light handling marks. Morbiducci produced patterns for six of the eight denominations (no halfpenny and no farthing) - these patterns occur in various metals (copper, silvered copper, nickle silver and silver). All of these patterns are rare - populations vary from a maximum of about 5 coins in a combination of metal and denimonation to unique combinations.
