Shelbourne take the Brenfer League Under-12s Costelloe Cup in Penalty Shoot-Out

Castleknock Celtic  2   Shelbourne  2  (Shels win 5-4 on penalties)

In this much delayed league cup final from the 2001-02 season, these two sides served up another feast of exciting football.  They had faced each other in a cup semi-final a couple of months ago, which Celtic won, also on penalties.  Shels were fortunate to go ahead when a back pass unluckily ended up in the Celtic net.  But the Hoops came back strong in the second half and were level after ten minutes with a clever chip from Stephen Cooper.

And then to extra time.  Paddy Daly struck in the first period to give Shels the edge and they looked like winners until a cleverly taken free on the right by Stephen Cooper was superbly headed home by Philip Germaine.  The nightmare scenario was again realised - penalty shootout.  This time it was the Reds who came out on top with all their penalty takers hitting the target.

So no treble for Celtic.  They had to settle for the league and cup double, with Shels taking the League Cup.  We look forward to another exciting season which starts in a couple of weeks time.
