Woodlawn   1     Castleknock Celtic  3

(Fitzpatrick, Moore Kearney 2)

 Saturday,6th November 2004

A feast of football was served up on the Oscar Traynor Road in this first leg of the NDSL,Under 9 Cup for A and B divisions. Both sides went close in the first two quarters with Patrick Rocca  see his shot just shave the post and ‘keeper Eoin Sweeney stopping several shots from the home side.

Celtic always looked like the side to open the scoring. Just after half-time,a break down the left flank by Eoghan O’Dunuchu created a chance for Philip Fitzpatrick in front of goal. After jinking through the Woodlawn defence, Philip was taken down outside the ‘box and a free was awarded. He hit a screamer over the wall and into the top of the net.

In the final quarter, Castleknock increased their dominance and had several chances to score. Passing was the name of the game and all players deserve credit for the part they played in this victory. A culmination of passes ended up with Ryan Moore Kearney being fouled on the edge of the box. A wall was set up but Ryan hammered a shot to the side of the wall to score on the near post.

Woodlawn replied with a pile driver from 30 yards that was unstoppable…a wonderful goal. With 5 minutes to go, a couple of tactical changes were made by David Fogarty. It was from one of these players, Dan Ring who turned defence into attack with a precise through-pass to Tom Fogarty. Tom passed on to Ryan who beat a few players to score a rasper to complete the scoring.

The weather would not encourage people to come out and support the team but there was a great turnout of Parents, family and friends. It was heartening to see Danny Byrne’s Dad, Neil, return,……back on his feet after being out for 4 months with a broken leg.
