Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation is a movement/dance form that uses skills based on the dynamics of physical contact, weight, flow, inner awareness, energy, momentum and trust. The practice involves developing inward attention whilst attuning with another. In partnership, a point of contact is followed between one's self and one's partner, using any part of one's body whilst continuously moving and shifting weight.

The practice of maintaining one's own inner rhythm and also maintaining connection in movement with another's rhythm invites an experience of mutual connection. Skills of balancing flow between giving and receiving, leading and following are reinforced through movement in relationship.  Opportunities are presented to learn how to respond instantly and to communicate both emotional and physical circumstances. Contact Improvisation invites an exploration into how we feel, move and behave in relationship. 

In this movement form the following skills are taught and practised: rolling, falling, giving and receiving weight, playing with momentum and gravity, discovering ledges and playing with different qualities of touch. Themes arising in the work include:
