KerryO Event Types

Our events consist of two general types, league & non-league. League events - Southwest League, Kerry Autumn League, Kerry Spring League (specific information on each of these follows) - take place on Sunday mornings with start-times between 11:00am and 1:00pm, or, in the case of evening events, on weekday evenings with start-times between 5:30pm & 7:30pm. For all leagues, points are awarded to finishers of each event, based upon finishing order, in the following fashion: 1st - 12pts; 2nd - 10pts; 3rd - 9pts; 4th - 8pts; 5th - 7pts; 6th - 6pts; 7th - 5pts; 8th - 4pts; 9th - 3pts; 10th - 2pts; 1 point for all other finishers. A competitor's best results (3 best results in a 4-event league, 4 best results in a 5-event league) make up the final results at the end of the series.

The stunning setting of orienteering events!

The non-league events are generally events held on smaller and simpler maps. They can be standard Sunday morning events, e.g. local events fitted in between league events. They can also be held on other days, be evening events, or even special night events.

All our events consist of courses of various lengths and navigational difficulty. These range from simple courses of 2 or 3 kilometers mostly on paths and tracks - perfect for young children, or anyone starting orienteering, or anyone who just wants a relaxing Sunday walk - to physically & technically tough courses up to 10 kilometers long, a climb of a few hundred meters, and requiring cross-country navigation through forest, moorland, and over open mountainside

Events have up to 6 different courses. These are identified using a standard Irish system of colour codes (for consistency of orienteering throughout Ireland). The colour-coded courses used in our events are:

-    Brown - Very technical, long and physically tough.
     (Technical Difficulty 5 / Physical Difficulty 5)
-    Blue - Very technical, somewhat shorter than Brown and physically reasonably tough.
     (Technical Difficulty 5 / Physical Difficulty 4)
-    Green - Technical, but not too long and not too physically tough.
     (Technical Difficulty 5 / Physical Difficulty 4)
-    Light Green - Similar in length to Green, but not as technical or physically tough.
     (Technical Difficulty 4 / Physical Difficulty 3)
-    Orange - Quite short, technically easy and physically quite easy.
     (Technical Difficulty 3 / Physical Difficulty 2)
-    Yellow - Very short, not technical at all and physically very easy.
     (Technical Difficulty 2 / Physical Difficulty 2)
Rated: 1 (simple) to 5 (difficult)

Event entry fees are the same for all events. Senior non-member - €7; senior member - €6; student: €4; junior non-member: €4; junior member - €3. Seniors are those of class M21 / W21 or older (i.e. those who turn 21 in the calendar year the event takes place).

Southwest League

The Southwest League series is a new joint league set-up by KerryO and CorkO. The idea is to bring together the best maps of KerryO and of CorkO in Kerry and West Cork to create a league of the very highest quality as an incentive to get orienteers of each club to travel to the events hosted by the other club. Also, in the absence of the Munster League, it is hoped that orienteers throughout Munster will take part in the league.

The league takes place from January to May and consists of 4 events, 2 hosted by KerryO & 2 hosted by CorkO. The standard colour-coded courses; brown, blue, green, orange and yellow are used. Keeping to the same colour course and completing 3 events out of 4 are necessary to qualify. Points are awarded to finishers of each event using our standard league system. Best 3 results out of 4 are used to compute the final results.

Kerry Autumn League

This league consists of 4 or 5 events held during the autumn and early winter from late September to early December. The events are all hosted by KerryO on our maps in Kerry. Keeping to the same colour course and completing 3 events out of 4 (4 events out of 5) are necessary to qualify. Points are awarded to finishers of each event using our standard league system. Best 3 results out of 4 (4 results out of 5) are used to compute the final results.

Kerry Spring League

This league consists of 4 or 5 events held during the late winter, spring and early summer from January to June. The events are all hosted by KerryO on our maps in Kerry. With the Spring League now running at the same time as the Southwest League, we have introduced evening park-o / short-o events in May & June as part of this league. Keeping to the same colour course and completing 3 events out of 4 (4 events out of 5) are necessary to qualify. Points are awarded to finishers of each event using our standard league system. Best 3 results out of 4 (4 results out of 5) are used to compute the final results.
