Particle Physics

Physics is about the ‘why’, ‘what’ and ‘how’ of everything in the cosmos.  Particle physics is the modern search for answers to ancient questions, posed initially by the Greek philosophers.  It is the record of the current state of knowledge of the basic or fundamental entities in the cosmos.  Our insatiable curiosity, combined with a sophisticated technology, has driven the search for the most elementary particles, which we believe are the basic building blocks of matter.  That search has to involve an understanding of the fundamental forces of nature or, in modern terminology, the fundamental interactions that occur between the elementary particles.
