June 1983
- Radio Carousel, Navan. This is the AM Transmitter. It was located
on the inside
roof of The Navan Shopping Centre. Using 2 x 813
valves in the driver
stage and 2 x 813
valves in the output stage, the transmitter was controlled
by a crystal tuned to 1386 kilohertz. The valves
needed to be changed every three months or so. They cost about £5
each and were imported from
Russia. I had the job of getting a ladder and climbing up on to the
roof to change the valves. I was actually scared of heights, but my
enthusiasm of radio drive me to climb that ladder, conquer that fear
and get the new valves installed.
As a matter
of interest, the transmitter power plug was connected to a power socket
in the Navan Shopping Centre.
It was many years later before the shopping centre management
found out that they had been paying for the power
supply to the Radio Carousel transmitter without knowing it! It's not known
if they insisted on back-payment after the discovery! |
