Some of these questions require factual knowledge.  Others require you to apply that knowledge to demonstrate your understanding.  Remember attempting to answer questions (set by yourself or others) is a good way to challenge your mind and helps you to learn.

10.  Find out from the web site of an ISP what services they provide and the cost of these services

History of Internet

 

1876                              Alexander Graham Bell invents telephone

1965                ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) commissions research into networking of computers

1969                Four American universities connect their computers:

 

Stanford---University of California (Santa Barbara)--- University of California (Los Angelus)--- University of Utah (ARPAnet). 

 The US military contributed to the development of the early internet

 

1973                University of London---Royal Radar Establishment of Norway
                        added to ARPANET.  (First connection outside America)

 

1990-1991       World Wide Web concept developed at CERN particle physics research institute in Switzerland by Tim Berners-Lee

 

1993                MOSAIC Browser developed at University of Illinois.  (First graphical browser for viewing web pages)

1994                First Internet Café (Cyboria) opened in London

1995                Internet Explorer browser launched by Microsoft and included free with Microsoft software on new computers.  Sound added to World Wide Web with the development of Real Audio (an audio streaming technology) by Progressive Networks

1997                US courts declare that legislation to control access to obscene material on the Internet unconstitutional.

1998                Microsoft launch Windows 98 with its Internet Explorer browser integrated into the package.  Rival companies such as Netscape take legal action to prevent Microsoft having control over users access to the Internet

1999                Encyclopaedia Britannica launched on the Internet with free access.  Internet 2 commenced providing a second less congested network connecting 170 US research universities

2000                Love Bug virus infects 45 million computers.  Over 300 million users estimated world wide.
