Emma Sargent Kelly of Eadestown ran a fine first leg over 600 metres having Kildare lying in fourth place just behind Galway with Clare and Dublin contesting the lead.  The baton changed to Aoine O’Donoghue from Carbury for next 400 metres. Aoine maintained Kildare’s position before passing the baton to Confey’s Aine O’Connor to run the second 600-metre leg.

Aine gave chase on the three athletes in front but could not overhaul them. Robyn Traynor from Eadestown found Clare, Dublin and Galway ahead of her with Monaghan breathing down her neck. Twenty metres covered the five runners with 400 metres to go.

Towards the finish, Clare held the late finish of Galway with Kildare and Monaghan running on the take third and fourth.
