Dermot Earley   DERMOT EARLEY R.I.P.

It was with great sadness we heard of the passing of one of Irelands greatest icons and heroes last week. Former Chief of Staff Lieutenant Dermot Earley died at the age of 62. He retired early from the Defence Forces although he was not due to stand down until next Spring. He was Chief Of Staff for the last 3 years. In April Dermot was presented with the Distinguished Service medal by Taoiseach Brian Cowen.

Dermot played Gaelic football with his native Roscommon for 20 years from 1965- 1985. It was always said he was one of the greatest players never to win an All-Ireland. He won 2 All-Star awards. He later went on to manage Rsocommon and Kildare where he lived over the last few decades. His son Dermot who plays for Kildare holds two All star awards and his daughter Noelle holds one.

Lt General Earley was laid to rest in Newbridge last Saturday after a full military ceremony. He will be sadly missed by his wife, children, mother and extended family. He will also be deeply missed by all those in every walk of life that knew him or met him. He was very popular man and a great role model. Our Club Kilglass Gaels was honoured to have him present as our Special Guest at the 2008 Dinner Dance . We extend our depest sympaty to his family.
