First ever title for Kilglass ladies
LADIES MINOR FOOTBALL FINAL
Kilglass Gaels celebrated their first ladies minor title in stylewhen the overcame St. Brigids last Sunday afternoon. The Kiltoom ladies were first off the mark with a point from S. Ahern but Kilglass soon gained control as they ran at their opponents. By the 10th minute, they had raced into a three point lead and their superiority was rarely questioned for the remainder of the contest.
Nicola Tully accounted for Kilglass’ first score and this was soon followed by another point from county star Louise Tully. The scores continued to flow for Kilglass with E. A. King adding to the Roosky side’s tally.
The momentum was now with Kilglass and they rapidly closed down the threat of the Brigids attack. After St. Brigids spurned a decent goal chance, the resultant kickout found its way to E. A. King. She duly raced goalwards and unleashed an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net.
Just on the stroke of half time, a high ball into the Brigids defence rebounded off the post and E. McGuire finished the rebound to the back of the net. At half time, Kilglass enjoyed a 2-6 to 0-1 advantage.
Any chance of a Brigids comeback was dashed at the start of the second half when Nicola Tully scored an outstanding goal. The vast majority of the large crowd thought she was trying her luck for a point but she shot low past a helpless Brigids goalkeeper.
Brigids eventually brought their goalkeeper further out the field in an attempt to curb Kilglass Gaels’ undisputed superiority. With the introduction of C. Sheehan, they began to play their best football and S. Finnerty scored a good goal. The same player bore down on goal minutes later but Kilglass goalkeeper M. Cox made a marvellous save. Indeed, it was a credit to the St. Brigids side that they never stopped playing even though the game was lost.
After absorbing that pressure, Kilglass tagged on four more point before Nicola Tully flicked Kilglass Gaels’ final goal to the net. This was a real Kilglass team effort and Louise Tully picked up the player of the match award.
