Our Viking Stories

The Vikings came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Viking ships were 30 metres long. Their ships could carry up to 32 men in them. When the wind was blowing they needed oars to move the ship. The Vikings did not bring their ships near the shore. Many people thought they wore horned helmets.

The Salmon of Knowledge

One day, Finegas was fishing in the river Boyne for the Salmon of Knowledge. Suddenly a young boy came running towards him. He said “Hello, my name is Fionn. My father has been killed in a battle and now his enemies are after me”. Finegas let Fionn stay with him. By day Fionn cleaned the hut and cooked the meals. By night he and Finegas ate the meals and Fionn would listen to Finegas telling stories.

One day while Fionn was cooking, Finegas rushed in with a large salmon in his hands. Finegas said “cook and watch this salmon while I get some more firewood”.

While Finegas was gone, a blister slowly rose on the salmon. When Fionn saw it he put his thumb on it to burst it. Immediately he burned his thumb nd put it in his mouth. Then, puff, a cloud of smoke rose! It showed a fair-haired boy with a band of warriors following him.

When Finegas came back Fionn told him all about it. Finegas looked cross, but sad because the salmon he fished for all his life and the gift from it had gone to someone else.

Viking warriors travelled on boats and raided other countries. Vikings had swords, shields and they wore helmets. They had big boats called longships. A longship was about 30 metres long. Some of the vikings had very little food. They stole gold and silver. Vikings wore lots of rings. Viking raids usually took place in Spring or Autumn.

The Salmon of Knowledge

Finegas was an old poet. He longed to taste the Salmon of Knowledge. One day a boy came running towards him. The boy explained that his father had been killed. Finegas said “ I will look after you”.

Day by day, Finegas kept on fishing for the Salmon of Knowledge. One day he came in with great joy-“ I have caught the salmon of knowledge”. Fionn looked after the fish while Finegas looked for firewood. Fionn saw a blister rise on the salmon. He put his thumb on the blister and then put the blister into his mouth. Fionn saw a cloud. In the cloud he saw a boy. The boy was leading a great army.

When Finegas came back, Fionn told him about the cloud. Finegas was cross with him as he knew that the wisdom had gone to Fionn.
