Heavy Defeat for Minors 7th Oct'06 The Kilmoyley minors suffered a big defeat at the hands of St. Brendans in the Minor County championship final at Austin Stack park on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-5. Only a handful of the players played to their potential and it was a very disappointing performance considering the big effort put in by everyone over the last few weeks.Match Report later
Meanwhile, the Seniors' poor run continued on Sunday when they were beaten by Lixnaw at Lerrig by 1-16 to 1-7 in the county league. They have one game remaining in the league and must score at least a draw to qualify for the final.
Mixed weekend for Kilmoyley teams 25th Sept '06 Kilmoyley had three teams in action over the weekend with differing results. On Saturday evening the minors qualified for the championship final with a comfortable win over Abbeydorney in Ardfert by 1-12 to 0-7. This was a good all round team performance but they will still need to improve their performance if they are to beat St. Brendans in the final in two weeks time. In the first game of a double bill in Causeway on Sunday, the under 14s looked out of sorts as they were well beaten by Ballyduff in the County final although they did get a few late scores. The Seniors seemed to be in the same frame as the U14s as they too went down rather tamely to Ballyduff again in the semi-final of the North Kerry championship. Kilmoyley never looked threatening throughout the game and went down by 1-15 to 1-9.
Busy weekend of Fixtures 21st Sept '06 The local hurling scene gets underway again this weekend with a number of fixtures. Defeat for U13s 16th Sept '06 Kilmoyley's U13 team lost to Causeway in the North Kerry hurling final in Lixnaw on Friday evening by 1-5 to 1-3. Despite leading for most of the game, Causeway seemed to be the stronger team but could not convert their chances, thanks also to some great defending from Vincent and Coleman Savage and Luke Fitzell. But with only five minutes remaining, Causeway goaled from a 21 metre free and stretched their advantage to two points with time almost up. It was a good effort by the Kilmoyley boys and they cannot be faulted for their effort.

Defeat for intermediates 11th Sept '06 Kilmoyley's Intermediates were well beaten by Kilgarvan in the Intermediate County hurling final by 1-16 to 1-6. Although it was only in the final five minutes that Kilgarvan had a comfortable lead they were the better team from the first whistle and deserved their win. (Match Report) Meanwhile, Ballyduff's Mike Hennessy bowed out of championship hurling in style by leading the club to victory over Causeway in the Senior final by 1-17 to 1-11. Not only was he trainer of the team but he also came off the bench in the final few minutes and scored a point to win his seventh championship medal. Ní bheidh a leithéad ann arís.

The starting lineup is the same as that which began in the win over St. Brendans in the semi final. There is a wide age group being represented with six minors JB O'Halloran, James Godley, David Fitzell, Edward Fitzgerald, Niall Young and Andy McCarthy and elder statesmen Tom Godley at full forward and the evergreen JB Griffin among the subs. Best of luck lads.

Semi-Final defeat for Seniors 26th August'06For the second year in a row Kilmoyley found themselves second best to Ballyduff in the senior county championship. But yet again, the game was there for the taking although Kilmoyley were far below their best. However, the game seemed to be going to plan to half time when the game was tied and Kilmoyley had the advantage of a slight breeze for the secind half. But Kilmoyley could only score three points to Ballyduff's six for the final thirty minutes. Ballyduff brought an extra player back to pack their defense and this tactic worked well as the Kilmoyley forwards were offered little time and room on the ball to make any headway. Ballyduff on the otherhand only attacked sporadically, but made the most of theri posession. The fact that only one Kilmoyley forward from ten (four subs were introduced in attack)scored during the game tells its own story.
Injury worries for seniors 25th August '06 The Kilmoyley Seniors carry a number of injuries into this weekend's AIB Senior County championship semi-final against Ballyduff. Definitely out are Colin Harris (fractured knee cap) and Paul McCarthy (torn ligaments). Colin is in a cast for at least six weeks while Paul is on crutches. Sean Fitzgerald could also miss the game with a damaged ankle.
North Kerry win for Intermediates 23rd August '06 Despite starting the game with only 14 players Kilmoyley's Intermediates enjoyed a comfortable win over Crotta in the quarter final of the North kerry championship by 2-12 to 2-2. The Intermediates face St. Brendans in the semi-final of the County championship next Tuesday in Abbeydorney.

Under 8s take part in blitz 20th August '06 Lerrig hosted a four team blitz on Saturday with Kilmoyley, Crotta, Abbeydorney and St. Brendans taking part. Kilmoyley were defeated by a much stronger Crotta side in their first game. Abbeydorney provided the opposition in the second game and they also proved to be too strong for Kilmoyley. St. Brendans did best on the day winning both their games. Well done to all who participated.
Championship win for Intermediates 15th August '06 Kilmoyley's Intermediates put in a good display in overcoming Causeway at Lerrig in the quarterfinal of the Intermediate championship by 0-17 to 2-7. Kilmoyley finished comfortable winners, although they did concede two soft goals towards the end.
Seniors to meet Ballyduff in semi-final 13th August '06 Despite playing poorly, the Senior advanced to the county championship semi-final where they will meet old rivals Ballyduff. Crotta provided tough opposition and with only five minutes remaining the game still hung in the balance. But a goal and a point from Joe and Maurice Murnane in the space of thirty seconds finally decided the game in Kilmoyley's favour. But there will need to be a big improvement in their performance if they are to overturn last year's defeat to Ballyduff.
In the other quarter-finals Causeway beat Ballyheigue by a single point by 1-7 to 0-9 on Friday, thanks to goal from a late JM Dooley free. Ballyduff had a surprisingly easy 0-11 to 1-5 win over last years champions Lixnaw, while St. Brendans and Abbeydorney drew in an exciting finish.
Underage Wins for Kilmoyley 4th August '06 Klmoyley's U14s enjoyed a comfortable win over Abbeydorney in the semi-final of the North Kerry championship on a scoreline of 3-10 to 0-2. The U15s also advanced to the final of the U15 County championship with victory over Kenmare/Kilgarvan.

Narrow win for Seniors in County league 24th July'06 A goal from a last minute free by Shane Brick helped Kilmoyley to a narrow one point win over neighbours Causeway in the County League. The pitch in Causeway was very hard and rough and made playing conditions more difficult. Kilmoyley welcomed back Shane Brick after a lengthy layoff following a knee operation. There was little between the teams in the first quarter, but a goal by Joseph O'Sullivan edged Kilmoyley into the lead. But Causeway kept in touch with a number of soft frees. The second half followed a similar pattern but the game was very much stop/start. Causeway went in front with a few minutes to go, but the last minute free gave Kilmoyley the win. (More Soon)
Kerry hurlers retain Christy Ring status 24th July'06 Kerry defeated a very poor Roscommon outfit in the Christy Ring Relegation final at Ennis last Saturday in front of 7 spectators! It has been a long and unprofitable year for the hurlers, especially since the commencement of the championship in which Kerry failed to win a single group game, losing out to Kildare, Wicklow, Mayo and Carlow. However, the retention of Christy Ring status ensures that the county has not gone backwards from last year, at least in terms of the competitions to be played.

Weekend disappointment for Kilmoyley sides 18th June'06The U14s travelled to Cork at the weekend to take part in the National Community Games finals. Following victories in their first two games, Kilmoyley met Naas but having conceded two early goals they were under pressure for the remainder of the game. Despite a strong fightback against a physically stronger team they lost by three points and missed out on a semi-final place. The Seniors played St. Brendans on Saturday in the Lee Strand sponsored Abbeydorney 11s of Kerry, and ran out winners in an ill-tempered affair by five points 1-11 to 0-9. They were due to play Ballyduff in the semi-final but they failed to field a team, so Kilmoyley went straight into the final. The final against the home side was an exciting affair and Kilmoyley led at half time by 2-6 to 1-3 having played with the breeze. Tom and joe Murnane scored the goals. Abbeydorney scored 1-1 inside a minute and kept up the pressure as the Kilmoyley forwards found it difficult to score. Joe Murnane scored his second goal to stretch Kilmoyley's lead, but Abbeydorney were better at finishing their chances and finished with 3-10. Kilmoyley had one final chance but some good defending prevented Kilmoyley scoring again. Final score 3-10 to 3-9.
St. Brendans cause upset 16th June'06The St. Brendans footballers caused a minor upset when they beat Austin Stacks at Lerrig on Friday evening in the third round of the AIB County championship by 3-11 to 1-9. Once again the field was in top condition for the game and the large attendance were impressed with our facilities.
Dramatic win for U11s 14th June'06The Kilmoyley's U11s scored a dramatic win over Lixnaw in the North Kerry League at Lerrig on Wednesday evening. Kilmoyley led by one point at half time thanks to a goal by Shane Monahan. Lixnaw edged ahead with a goal of their own early in the half, but Kilmoyley replied with a goal and a point from Paudie O'Connor and Jordan Brick. A controversial goal was awarded to Lixnaw with three minutes remaining after the ball seemingly went wide. But a long delivery from full back Paudie O'Connor went all the way to the net to edge Kilmoyley in front ubtil the final whistle. It was a determined display by the home team whose final game is away to Ballyduff next week.
The Rockies are coming!! 14th June'06This Friday, Lerrig hosts its first AIB County championship club game, and it's not hurling. After two miles you will reach Kilmoyley Church and Tóchar Bán where you can leave your transport and take a half mile walk to the field.
U12s win North Kerry Blitz 12th June'06 Kilmoyley overcame Causeway in the post-poned NK 10-a-side ground hurling blitz at Lixnaw by 3-4 to no score. Although Kilmoyley had easily beaten the same opposition earlier in competition, there was little to choose between the teams early on. In fact, if it were not for two great saves from keeper Paudie O'Connor Kilmoyley would have found themselves behind early on. But Kilmoyley's midfield of captain Dougie Fitzell and Daniel Collins began to get on top and a long ball to James Murphy was flicked to the net to open the score. He added a point from a free to leave Kilmoyley 1-1 to nil ahead to the break. Kilmoyley never looked in trouble in the second half and only for some great saves by the Causeway keeper would have been well ahead. But the pressure eventually told and Coleman Savage scored three wonderful points from frees and sidelines to give the winners a comfortable lead. Kilmoyley added two more goals to give them a well deserved win. Joe Walsh, on behalf of the North Kerry board presented captain Dougie Fitzell with the trophy and the Kilmoyley players were treated to a meal after.Well done to trainers Paul McCarthy and Brendan Harris. (See Pictures)
Double victory at Lerrig 11th June'06 The Kilmoyley Seniors and U14s had victories over their Causeway counterparts at Lerrig on Sunday in the North Kerry Championship. For the U14s, it was their final game before heading for Cork for this weekends Feile na nGael, but they completely overpowered the opposition running out easy winners. The Seniors meanwhile didn't have it as easy with five first team players unavailable. The strong wind made for a "game of two halves" with Kilmoyley trailing by five points at the break. Causeway actually stretched their lead to six points but an immediate goal from Joe Murnane cut the deficit once again. It wasn't until the final ten minutes that Kilmoyley pulled clear and clocked up a score of 1-18, which in the conditions was good scoring. Tom Murnane was the main scorer, putting over some excellent frees. They now advance to the semi-final.

Kilmoyley beat Lixnaw in theri first game but were well beaten by Faughs of Dublin in their second game. In a very entertaining final Faughs overcame Causeway. A mini skills competition was alos held with two players from each club taking part. The winner was Brendan Reidy from Ballyheigue. The U11s have played two games in the North Kerry league but have lost both to stronger opposition. At Lerrig, St. Brendans were the victors while they travelled to Ballyheigue on Wednesday but despite a gutsy second half were again beaten. Training takes place Saturday at Lerrig at 12pm for U8s to U11s. The Intermediates defeated St. Brendans at Lerrig on Wednesday to qualify for the semi-final of the North Kerry C'ship.
Upcoming events at Lerrig 31st May '06The reputation of Kilmoyley's sportsfield at Lerrig was enhanced even further with the announcement this week that the field will host the County cfootball championship tie between St. Brendans and Austin Stacks. It was felt that the field in Ardfert would not have the capacity to hold an expected big attendance, while Lerrig also has a stand for supporters. Meanwhile this Saturday sees Kilmoyley hosting an under 10s hurling tournament between six clubs, including the Faughs club from Dublin. It will also feature a skills competition with two players from each club taking part. With the weather steadily improving this week, the field should be in top class condition once again following all the recent rain.
Seniors advance to NKL final 14th May '06It wasn't pretty, but Kilmoyley edged past Ballyduff at Lerrig in the North Kerry Senior hurling league where they will meet Ballyheigue for the second year in a row. Following the previous night's heavy rain underfoot conditions were wet which did not allow for free flowing hurling. At one stage Kilmoyley led by six points but some poor defensive lapses allowed Ballyduff back into the game. In the end, Kilmoyley held out for a two point win on a score of 2-7 to 2-5.
Intermediates win NKL final 12th May '06A strong second half display saw Kilmoyley take the honours in the Intermediate North Kerry final by 2-11 to 1-4. Draw for Seniors in County League 3rd May '06 A large turned out to see the Seniors play out an exciting draw with neighbours St. Brendans in Ardfert in round two of the Credit Union County league after coming from eight points down at half time. A last minute pointed '65 by Tom Murnane ensured the draw for Kilmoyley, who despite having numerical advantage for the majority of the game struggled throughout the game. It is the third occassion already this year that the Seniors have played against a team who have had a player dismissed. (Match Report)
Under 14s retain Feile County title 1st May'06 The Kilmoyley U14s retained the Kerry Feile na Gael title in a thoroughly entertaining and exciting final at Abbeydorney against Ballyduff before a large crowd. Kilmoyley played with a stiff breeze in the first half and after soaking up some early Ballyduff pressure, scored two goals inside a minute to lead at half time by 2-3 to 0-1. As expected, Ballyduff applied the pressure from the throw in, but once again Kilmoyley's defence held firm even if they conceded a number of points from close-in frees. The Kilmoyley nerves were settled once again when they pointed a free. But there was to be a grandstand finish, when the Ballyduff full- forward (who had played in goals in the first half) scored an excellent individual goal to leave only three points between the teams with five minutes remaining. But once gain, the Kilmoyley defence stood firm with corner back Sean Nolan making some excellent clearances. As the Ballyduff defence pushed forward, the Kilmoyley forwards had more room to work an excellent goal, and added a second goal inside the minute again to finish off the game as time was up. Well done to all. (Match Report)
Kerry hurlers disappoint in League decider 30th April '06It proved to be a step too far for the Kerry Senior hurlers in Thurles on Sunday as they were comfortably beaten by Dublin in the Allianz NHL Div 2 final by 0-17 to 1-6. Getting seven scores over 70 minutes tells its own story, but overall Dublin were better throughout, although Colin Harris, Aidan Boyle and keeper PJ O'Gorman were some of the better players on show. The defeat means that Kerry will play another season in division 2 of the league, and perhaps it is better, as Kerry are still some way short of the hurling required.(Match Report later)
Under 14s qualify for Feile final 28th April '06 The Kilmoyley U14s qualified for the final of the Feile na nGael when they defeated Lixnaw by 2-2 to 0-2 in the semi-final at Abbeydorney yesterday evening. The Intermediates were also defeated in their first game of the year, going down by 4-5 to 0-5 to Ballyheigue on Wednesday evening. The U-16s meanwhile progressed to the semi-final of the NK U-16 championship when they overcame Lixnaw by 4-4 to 1-4.

Kerry qualify for semis 3rd April '06
Despite playing well below their best, in beating Kildare by six points Kerry automatically qualified for the semi-finals of the Allianz NHL, as they finished group 2B with a one point better scoring difference than group rivals Westmeath. Kerry can once again thank Shane Brick who was Kerry's main scorer, but John Griffin was Kerry's best player sweeping up all over the field. Underfoot conditions were very wet and a strong breeze made scoring difficult, but kildare were guilty of some very poor shhoting, with fifteen wides alone in the first half. (Match Report)
GPA call off strike action 2nd April '06
The Gaelic Players Association have announced that they are to ballot their members about possible strike action which could take place sometime in the future - a move which guarantees the completion of the current hurling and football leagues.
It had originally been thought that GPA members would vote on whether to strike on the weekend of April 8/9 but the players’ body backed down from this stance and instead decided to immediately ballot all its members about strike action if the GAA fails to meet their list of player welfare standards before a set date.

GPA threatens NL strike action 31st March'06
THE Gaelic Players' Association have asked their members to consider striking on the weekend after next. In a dramatic move, the players' body sent text messages to their 1,400-strong membership yesterday evening asking them to consider withdrawing their services on the day that the seventh round of the Allianz National Football League and a number of deferred NHL Division 1A games are due to be played. If Kerry finish second in Div 2B of the NHL, they could also be affected. The move will be viewed as the most militant proposal the the GPA has put forward since its establishment in 1999.
Kerry overcome by the Faithful 29th March'06
A gallant Kerry side went down by 2-27 to 1-11 to Offaly in yesterday's All-Ireland Vocational Schools Senior 'A' Hurling Championship at Rathkeale.
Despite the best efforts of Kilmoyley's Adrian Ryle and Andy McCarthy, James Flaherty, Mark Dineen and goalkeeper Richard O'Mahony, Kerry succumbed to a stronger and more physical Offaly side, coached by Kerryman Gearoid O'Regan, in a game played in heavy conditions. The Faithful County had lead by 1-15 to 0-3 at half time.
Kerry hurlers remain top of Div 2b
27th March'06 Heading into the final round of Div 2 NHL games, kerry remain top of the table following Westmeath's one point victory over Mayo yesterday. Kerry's next opponents Kildare finished with a late flourish to beat London by 2-13 1-7. If Kerry can beat Kildare in the final game, Westmeath must defeat London by a greater margin to claim an automatic semi-final spot in the league.
All-Ireland "B" victory for Kerry Vocational hurlers
23rd March'06 Congratulations to the Kerry Vocational school hurlers who defeated Wexford in the All-Ireland Vocational Schools Inter-County ’B’ final at Moyle Rovers, Clonmel on a scoreline of 2-18 to 2-7. Kilmoyley's Andy McCarthy and Adrian Royle were among the scorers, while Edward Fitzgerald and jake Doherty also played. Despite the scoreline, Kerry whose side was made up entirely of players from Causeway CS were made to work right to the end for their win.
Weekend Events
20th March'06 The Kilmoyley U21s went down tamely to St. Brendans in the semi-final of the 2005 County championship at Lerrig on St. Patricks day by 2-10 to 1-2. The Senior game against Ballyduff was cancelled at the 11th hour, apparently because there was no pitch available. This is awful disrespect on players and supporters alike, who could have made other arrangements for the day. A new Camogie club has been formed in the parish with the clubs of Kilmoyley and Ardfert amalgamating to form Cillard camogie club. The first training session took place at Lerrig on Sunday morning with over thirty players in action, ranging in age from under 8s to under 14s. (More Soon)
Kerry hurlers remain unbeaten
13th March'06 While they were unlucky in the end to only come away from Millingar with a draw, the Kerry Senior hurlers will at the same time be happy to remain unbeaten, and are still in with a chance of topping Division 2B of the Allianz NHL. A strong second half performance by Kerry saw them overturn a six point halftime deficit into a three point lead with time almost up. But the Kerry defence failed to clear a late Westmeath free which was dropped into the square and the ball was crashed to the net to level the scores. Kerry's final game in three weeks time will decide who tops the group. (Match details later)
Dates announced for outstanding '05 fixtures
9th March'06 The domestic season of 2005 will hopefully reach a conclusion over the coming weeks with the outstanding fixtures from last year being announced by the North Kerry hurling and County boards. It will be the teams first meeting since last years county championship encounter when Kilmoyley's five in a row dream was ended. The Seniors then meet Abbeydorney in the first round of this years NK league at Lerrig on Monday 3rd April at 6.30pm. The Under 11s will continue to train in the Sports hall in Causeway over the next few Sunday mornings at 11.30am for one hour.
Kerry hurlers make it two from two

Kerry hurlers off to winning start
20th Feb'06 They made it difficult for themselves in the end, but Kerry ruturned home from Ruislip with 2 points on the board following their 1-14 to 1-11 victory over London. (Match Report)
Famous victory for Ardfert footballers
20th Feb'06 Congratulations to the footballers of Ardfert on their brilliant victory over Loughrea of Galway in the All-Ireland Junior club football final in Croke Park. Once again, Ardfert came good in the end and scored a late goal to win by the narrowest of margins in front of a huge crowd of supporters from North Kerry.
Kerry play London in Ruislip in NHL
15th Feb'06 The Kerry Senior hurlers begin their National hurling league campaign this weekend with a trip away to London. There are five Kilmoyley players on the team - Ian Brick (4),Colin Harris (8), Paul McCarthy (9), Shane Brick (11) and Darren Young (12). Eoin Sheehy and Sean Maunsell are among the subs. There are a number of injuries on the Kerry panel, but following last weekends victory over St. Finbarrs in a challenge game, hopes are high of a winning start to the campaign.
Kilmoyley Bórd na nÓg AGM
9th Feb'06 The AGM of the Kilmoyley hurling club Bórd na nÓg AGM takes place this Sunday 12th February at 11.30am at the clubrooms. This is a very important meeting as officers and underage team officials will be decided. As ever, plenty of help is always welcome when it comes to looking after the youth of our parish.
Kerry hurlers suffer heavy defeat
5th Feb'06 UCC easily defeated Kerry in the semi-final of the Waterford Crystal shield at Austin Stack park by 5-19 to 0-10. The pace of the students' game was too quick for the Kerry boys and the game was over at halftime as Kerry trailed by eleven points. Shane Brick scored most of Kerry's points which were from frees.
Kerry hurlers play Shield semi-final
1st Feb '06 The Kerry hurlers 2006 campaign commenced with an encouraging display against WIT in Ballyheigue. In the end, the college finished the stronger to win the game 2-19 to 3-10 and have subsequently qualified to meet Limerick in the final following a comprehensive defeat of UL by 1-16 to 2-3. Kerry will meet UCC this Sunday in the semi-final of the Waterford Crystal shield at Austin Stack park at 2pm in what should prove to be an entertaining encounter. UCC only lost to Clare by a single point in their first round game so it would be a big task for Kerry to come through. If they can, they will meet the winners of Tipperary and Waterford who play on Saturday in Colligan.
Ardfert to play Croker
28th Jan'06 Congratulations to Johnny Stack and Denis McCarthy of Kilmoyley and the footballers of Ardfert on reaching the Junior club All-Ireland football final. In a thrilling semi-final played at Portlaoise, Ardfert scored a goal with the last kick of the game to win by a single point after extra-time defeating Monaghan Harps. They are now due to play the final against Loughrea of Galway at Croke park on 19th January.
Kilmoyley Senior Selectors for 2006
27th Jan'06 At a meeting held last Friday night Senior hurling trainer John Meyler announced his new selectors for the coming year. Selectors Joe Walsh (Kilmoyley), Joe Walsh (Lerrig), Pete Young and Gerard O'Sullivan all stepped aside after five years in the job while in comes Fr. Maurice Brick, Declan Lovett and Fintan Ryan. Views were aired as to how the club could learn from the mistakes of the previous year in a bid to be more successful in 2006.
NK Hurling Board AGM
26th Jan'06 Congratulations to Kilmoyley's Joe Walsh and Billy O'Connorwho were elected as Vice Chairman and Cultural Officer respectively, of the North Kerry hurling board for 2006. The last Kilmoyley man to hold a post on the board was Gerald Carroll who was Secretary.

3rd Dec'05 The annual Kilmoyley GAA Social takes place this Friday at Ballygarry House hotel. While Neilus Flynn will not be in our company this year, the John Joe O'Sullivan cup will be among us for the first time. Tickets are on sale from club officers.
Successful Stephen's day Charity game
26th Dec'05 Congratulations and well done to everyone who participated in the Charity football game at Pairc Naomh Eirc, Lerrig on St. Stephens day in aid of the Make A Wish foundation. Over forty players took to the field to play in a very entertaining game that ended in a draw (dispite a huge winning margin for the married players!). Special thanks goes to Finuge and Kerry footballer Eamon Fitzmaurice who played for the full game, and also to John Meyler who travelled from Cork to play. A Man of the Match award was presented by Munster winning Ardfert football captain Shane Griffin to Leonard Tuohy for his performance. Thanks also to club chairman Sean Murnane who referreed the game.
Charity Football game at Lerrig
14th Dec'05 The annual Charity Football game will be held once again at Lerrig on St. Stephen's day at 1.30pm. This event has been very successful over the last two years, and large sums of money have been raised for Our ladies hospital for sick children in Crumlin and for St. John's Ward at Tralee general hospital. Hopefully the weather will be kind to players and supporters once again. All are welcome.
Hurling scheme to be launched for Kerry
14th Dec'05 The Munster Council is to launch major schemes in Co Kerry and Limerick City to arrest the alarming decline of hurling in the two areas and Hurling Development Administrators have been appointed. This is in addition to the announcement that hurling Nationally is to get a €2.6m boost.
Hurling club AGM
11th Dec'05 There was a good attendance at the 2005 hurling club AGM which was held at the clubrooms on Sunday. There were no changes to the club officers who were returned unopposed and John Meyler will again be in charge of the Senior hurling team. Team captains will be chosen by the players at a later date.
All Ireland for O'Dorney ladies
5th Dec'05 Congratulations to Jackie Murnane, Colette Regan, Siobhan & Catherine Collins of Kilmoyley and the lady footballers of Abbeydorney who defeated Clann Eire of Armagh in the All-Ireland Intermediate club final at the weekend by 2-13 to 1-5. (More Soon)
No Joy for minors
20th Nov '05 Kilmoyley's minors went down 1-10 to 0-7 to Courcey Rovers in the final of the Seandún (Cork city South East) league final on Sunday. The Cork side proved to be much physically stronger than the Kilmoyley boys, and despite a great effort they played second best on the day. Well done to all concerned on a great effort.
Wedding Bells
8th Dec'05 Congratulaions to Kilmoyley hurler Micheal Regan and Lorraine Kelly of Ardfert who got married this Saturday. Micheal of course was a member of the four-in-a-row championship team and was in fact the only player to play in the same position for the four finals. Best of luck to both for the years ahead. Congratulaions also to Graham O'Connor, Banemore and Bernie Kenny of Ballyheigue who got married in Rome.
Minors face difficult task
18th Nov '05 The minors make their final long haul trip to Cork this Sunday as they play Courcey Rovers in the final of the Seandún (East Cork minor championship. Kilmoyley won all their games in the league campaign, bar one to qualify for the final but they will be missing Niall young and Jake Doherty, who are both absent through injury. It has been a long year for the team and their last game was the defeat to Ballyheigue /Abbeydorney outfir in the county championship some ten weeks ago! So well done to the players involved for their effort in training until now and also to trainer Maurice Fitzgerald who has dedicated so much time to the team. Here's hoping they get the result they deserve !
Munster League semi defeat for Seniors
14th Nov '05 Kilmoyley's Seniors put in a battling display against Bride Rovers in the semi-final of the Munster Senior League. It was always going to be a difficult task to make the final as their last game was six weeks ago in the NK championship final. However, the sides were level at eight points each at halftime, but a goal early after the restart swung things for the home side. In the end only four points separated the teams, and if Kilmoyley's forwards could have taken their scores, Kilmoyley could have found themselves in the final. Saying that, Rovers hit the crossbar twice and 'keeper Brendan Harris made some good saves, so in the end perhaps the result was a fair one. Final score Bride Rovers 1-14 Kilmoyley 1-13(More Soon).
U15s lose after extra time
24th Oct '05 The under 15s were unlucky to lose to Causeway by two points in the North Kerry final after extra time.
Lixnaw win County Final
17th Oct '05 Lixnaw defeated Abbeydorney in the AIB 2005 County Senior hurling final by 0-17 to 0-6 to win their first title since 1999. Lixnaw led by three points at the break after playing with the breeze, and after losing defender Maurice Corridon after quarter of an hour when he broke his leg. But Abbeydorney's forwards saw little possession in the second half, while Lixnaw upped its performance considerably all over the field. Overall, it was a disappointing game but again the condition of the pitch did not help. Lixnaw go on to meet Thurles Sarsfields in the Munster club QF at Thurles in two weeks time. Lixnaw's John "Tweeky" Griffin was voted Man of the Match after an excellent display at midfield. The curtain raiser was the County League hurling final between Ballyheigue and Causeway. There were only three points between the teams with time almost up, but a quick 1-1 by Ballyheigue put more daylight between the teams to leave the final score 2-13 to 0-12 in Ballyheigue's favour.
Wedding Bells
15th Oct '05 Congratulations to Kilmoyley hurler Gerald O'Carroll and Margaret Kelly from Crotta who were married at Irremore church today.Gerald was a panelist on the Kilmoyley four-in-a-row team and was last year's Intermediate captain. Best wishes to both from Kilmoyley hurling club.
Munster County Championship finals
15th Oct '05 Five of the Provinces county hurling finals take place today, with Clare being the odd one out with a semi final being played. All games will see new County champions. In Tralee Lixnaw face Abbeydorney in a replay. Not since Lismore's win in 1993 has a team other than Mount Sion or Ballygunner triumphed in Waterford, but De La Salle are in a position to end that duopoly this afternoon and county player John Mullane will have a big bearing on the outcome. In Tipperary, Thurles Sarsfields who won the last of a record 28 Tipperary senior titles in 1974 face Drom-Inch, who defeated Toomevara at Semple stadium. Another unique final at the Gaelic Grounds sees a south Limerick derby as Garryspillane and Kilmallock do battle. Garryspillane who feature the Ryan brothers and Frankie O'Carroll are bidding for their first ever title, and after last year's last minute heartbreak defeat to Ahane, they could see off a Kilmallock side bidding for their first title since 1994 and will be hoping for big performances from Mike Houlihan and forward Andrew O'Shaughnessy. In Cork, last year's beaten finalists Cloyne and former All-Ireland club champions Newtownshandrum face each other at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. Both sides are dominated by families: O'Sullivans, Cusack, Cahills for Cloyne, Mulchays and O'Connors on the other. In the semis Cloyne were lucky against UCC who failed to take their chances, while Newtown easily defeated the 'Barrs in the other.
County final Replay
14th Oct '05 The replay of the county hurling final between Abbeydorney and Lixnaw takes place this Sunday at Austin Stack park (the game will be preceeded by the county league final between Ballyheigue and Causeway). Lixnaw will be without Michael Conway who was red carded in the game two weeks ago, and they will certainly miss his free taking abilities. However, they also welcome back Paul Galvin and Eamon Fitzmaurice from football duty with Kerry. Abbeydorney, after waiting 31 years to play a county final now find themselves playing their second in two weeks. There may have been a feeling of what might have been for them but they will certainly go into the game more in confidence now than in hope. It should be a close contest once again. Hopefully the condition of the pitch will have improved from two weeks ago and make for a better game.
County final ends in a draw
2nd Oct '05 The hurlers of Abbeydorney and Lixnaw will have to do it all again on the 16th October after the County hurling final ended in a draw. Despite being reduced to fourteen men early in the second half, Lixnaw finished the game stronger and a Paul Galvin point levelled matters near the end.
Seniors bridge 18 year gap
1st Oct '05 Kilmoyley's Seniors bridged an eighteen gap in winning the North Kerry championship on Saturday with a well deserved victory over Ballyheigue in Ballyheigue by 0-14 to 2-5. The game was played in dry but blustery conditions and this did not help the game as a spectacle. A delighted Colin Harris accepted the John Joe O'Sullivan cup after the game.(More soon)
O'Dorney and Lixnaw reach County final
18th Sept '05 There were dramatic scenes at Austin Stack park on Sunday as Abbeydorney reached its first county final since 1974 by overcoming Ballyduff by eight points. Lixnaw easily defeated Causeway in the second semi 2-22 to 4-8 and will start the final as favourites.
Drama in NK Senior final
17th Sept '05 Kilmoyley's bid to win its first North Kerry Senior championship in nearly twenty years continues following their dramatic final with Ballyheigue last Saturday evening which ended in a draw. Once again, Kilmoyley showed its Jeckyl and Hyde form when they recovered from a ten point deficit after ten minutes to force a draw. Kilmoyley started at the same pace with which cost them against Ballyduff in the County championship two weeks earlier, and in looked to be heading for a humiliating defeat. But Kilmoyley showed that they still have some fight left by taking the game to a replay.
Minors out at QF stage
7th Sept '05 There was further disappointment for the club this week when the minors were defeated by Ballyheigue/Abbeydorney in the quarter final of the county championship. Just like the seniors, there were high hopes that the team could do well in the competition, and not just this fixture. But, there was a similar story to the Seniors in that the team did not play to its potential. It was even more disappointing after the huge effort made by players and mentors since the beginning of the year. Just shows, there are no certainties in sport.
Death and Taxes
5th Sept '05 There are only two certainties in life and unfortunately the Kilmoyley Seniors did not come to realise their full potential when they were beaten by Ballyduff in the quarter-final of this year's championship. In so doing the dream of five in a row is over ....for the meantime. As ever, the County hurling championship has thrown in a few surprises, and in doing so there will be three new semi-finalists this year - Ballyduff, Lixnaw and Abbeydorney, while Causeway are also through. Kilmoyley's defeat was even more disappointing for the fact that Ballyduff themselves had played poorly but they were able to turn a seven point deficit after ten minutes into a four point victory, thanks mainly to their three goals. Played in perfect conditions, Ballyduff were the hungrier and more determined team once they settled after the opening period giving the Kilmoyley players little or no time to dwell on the ball, forcing them into making mistakes.
Senior Championship QF for Kilmoyley
2nd Sept '05 Kilmoyley's Seniors begin their defence of the County Championship title tonight and in the process will be bidding for an unprecedented fifth title in a row. The opposition however could not have been more difficult, with old foes Ballyduff out first to stop Kilmoyley. No doubt there will be a large attendance at the game which has generated the most interest since the draws were made a number of months ago. This is the fourth time in the last five years that the sides have met and the boys in green and gold have been victorious each time. Both teams are joint top of the league table of championships won with twenty each. Kilmoyley's team shows a number of changes from that which started the 2004 County final against Causeway. Brendan Harris moves from corner back to goals while Paul McCarthy comes into the team after missing out on all of 2004 with a cruciate knee ligament injury. Into the halfback line comes Sean Griffin in place of Sean Fitzgerald while up front there are starting places for Sean Maunsell and Eoin Sheehy. A number of injury worries have cleared up with Shane Brick, Padraig Regan and Micheal Regan now able to start. It promises to be an exciting encounter with little between the teams, and with an outside referee in charge it should be a lively and free flowing encounter. If Kilmoyley can play to their ability, they should get through if luck is on their side.
Year ends for U14s
18th Aug'05 Kilmoyley's Under 14 team were unable to repeat their impressive Féile na nGael form when they lost to Ballyduff in the North Kerry championship at Lerrig by 2-3 to 1-4. The players and mentors can however, look back on a successful year when the Féile title was recaptured after 14 years.
Minors lose out in County League final
14th Aug'05 The minors put on a disappointing display against St. Brendans in the County League final Friday evening at Ardfert going down by 2-9 to 2-5. Kilmoyley actually led at half time by a single point having played with a slight breeze. But it was evident that the Ardfert boys were physically stronger and Kilmoyley were not moving the ball fast enough to get out of trouble. Despite having a player sent off in the final quarter, St. Brendans pressed home the advantage and as so often happens, Kilmoyley could not take advantage of the spare man. Niall Young did score a goal from a 21 metre free near the end and while James Godley put in a heroic display at fullback Kilmoyley were unable to add any further scores. The same teams face each other in the minor championship.
Under 8s in action in Lixnaw
14th Aug'05 Kilmoyley's Under 8 hurlers travelled to Lixnaw on Saturday to take on the locals in two challenge games. It was great to see twenty enthusiastic Kilmoyley players lining out and despite the mixed weather conditions earlier in the morning, it stayed dry for both games.
Seniors reach NK final
8th Aug'05 The Kilmoyley Seniors have reached the final of the North Kerry championship for the first time since 1991 when they overcame St.Brendans in a very competitive game in Ballyheigue last Friday. At half time Kilmoyley led by four points thanks mainly to a goal from Richard Gentleman. Kilmoyley enjoyed most of the possession again in the second half but it was only in the final ten minutes that any bit of daylight was put between the teams after Micheal Regan scored an opportunist goal. In the end Kilmoyley ran out convincing winners by 2-14 to 0-12. On Saturday the Seniors were in action again where thay faced Cork champions Na Piarsaigh in Cork. It was obvious that the effects of the game the day before had some baring on Kilmoyley's performance, but it was still an encouraging performance despite going down 3-15 to 0-12.
Weekend challenge games
8th Aug'05 Kilmoyley's U-13s played Mungret of Limerick in Lerrig on Saturday. Despite the poor weather conditions both sides hurled well with the Limerick side emerging winners by four points. The U8s had their first ever game on Saturday also at Lerrig against St. Brendans. Two games were played simultaneously with 18 Kilmoyley players involved in the "action". In a very exciting "A" game that had the spectators in the stand gripped Kilmoyley came back from a 1 goal halftime deficit to win by 3-0 to 2-1. In the "B" game St. Brendans proved to be far too strong and won comfortably.
Busy weekend for Seniors
5th Aug'05 The Kilmoyley Seniors play two competitive games over the next two days. On Friday evening in Ballyheigue they take on neighbours St. Brendans in the semi-final of the North Kerry championship. On Saturday, they travel to Cork city to take on Cork county champions Na Piarsaigh in their second round tie of the Munster League. Meanwhile, Kilmoyley's future fledglings the Under 8s have their first ever game against St. Brendans at Lerrig on Saturday morning at 11.30.
That Friday feeling
30th July '05 There was no joy this Friday for our Intermediates or U12s who lost in the County championship semi-final and County League finals respectively. The Intermediates lost out to Kilgarvan by the narrowest of margins at Fitzgerald Stadium. At Austin Stack park despite the best efforts of Vincent and Coleman Savage, Dougie Fitzell in goals, Sean Nolan and Luke Fitzell Ballyheigue proved to be too strong all round for the under 12s winning comfortably in the end by 3-7 to 0-8. Kilmoyley's top scorer was Vincent Savage with 7 points. It was the U12s second year in a row losing this final, but the skill level and commitment by many of the players augers well for the future of Kilmoyley hurling.
Upcoming games
30th July '05 Best of luck to Niall Young (captain), Adrian Royle and Andrew McCarthy who line out for Kerry today against Meath in the All-Ireland "B" final against Meath. The under 8s will have their first ever game against St. Brendans next Saturday 6th August in Ardfert at 11.30.
Jackie goals for Kerry
23rd July '05 The Kerry ladies qualified for a Munster final clash with Cork with a hard-earned 5-8 to 3-9 extra-time victory over Waterford on Saturday. Jackie Murnane, who has made the transition from corner back to wing forward made a significant contribution to the Kerry cause once again scoring two goals.
Difficult QF tie for Kilmoyley
21st July '05 For the second year in a row Kimoyley and Ballyduff meet in at the
quarter final stage of the Senior championship, following last night's draw on Radio
Kerry. it is undoubtedly the tie of the round between the two most successful club sides
in Kerry. The other ties involve teams playing in the preliminary round and are as follows
: Ballyheigue v. Lixnaw/Kenmare division, St. Brendans v. Abbeydorney/Crotta, Causeway v.
Winners of losers round. Quarter final games are not due to commence until the last
weekend in August. It promises to be a very exciting championship once again, and of
course every team will be out to stop Kilmoyley achieving an historic fifth title in a
row.
AIB County Championship Draws 20th July '05 The 2005 AIB
County Championship Draws for hurling and football take place tonight on Radio Kerry at
9pm. As there have been no games played to date in this year's hurling championship, all
teams will be entered in the draw. There is no news on the minor championship
Kerry Masters hurling 18th July '05 The Kerry Masters
hurlers were unlucky to lose against Tipperary on Monday evening at Abbeydorney after a
gutsy display. With former stars Pat Fox and Declan Carr in their ranks the Tipp men led
comfortably at half time by 1-6 to 0-2 after playing with the aid of a strong wind. But it
only took Kerry three minutes to draw level, with two long deliveries going all the way to
the net. Kerry were actually two points to the good with ten minutes remaining, but with
Pat Fox clearing all the loose ball from his half back line Kerry failed to score again
until the last minute, by which time they were four points in arrears. Best for Kerry on
the night were Mike Burke, JB Griffin, Martin Trench and man of the match Tadgh O'Halloran
in goals. Final score Kerry 2-8 Tipperary 1-14.
Weekend action 18th July '05 Despite being unable to
qualify for the semi-finals the Kerry Senior hurlers finished their 2005 campaign with a
good victory over Carlow by 3-15 to 2-8 at Austin Stack park Tralee. It was also announced
that manager Jerry Molyneaux would be staying on for another year in the job.
The Kilmoyley minors lost their first game of the Cork City/South-East Minor
"A" Hurling League when they were defeated by Courcey rovers 4-10 to 3-8.
Despite both teams taking to the field at Lerrig, the Senior county league game against
St. Brendans did not go ahead as a referee could not be appointed for the game at late
notice.
Minor's win in Cork 11th July '05 The Kilmoyley minors made
the their weekly trip to Cork last weekend to play in the Cork City/South-East Minor
"A" Hurling League. The trip proved to be fruitful with a good win over city
side St. Vincents by 2-12 to 2-8.
Next weekend the minors take on Courcey Rovers in Ballinspittle at 12.
Kerry's interest over in Christy Ring Cup 10th July '05 The
Kerry hurlers had another disappointing result on Saturday when they could only manage a
draw with struggling Wicklow at Austin Stack Park Tralee, and as a result cannot qualify
for the semi-final stages. There was little conviction about Kerry's play and it was
Wicklow in fact who showed the greater hunger, despite the fact they were already out of
the competition. Kilmoyley's Paul McCarthy, Colin Harris, James McCarthy, Eoin Sheehy and
Darren Young all did their part on the day.
Poker Classic 7th July '05 Thanks to everyone who took part
in the hurling club's Poker Classic which was held at McElligott's Bar in Ardfert.
Community Games 4th July '05 There was no luck for the
Ardfert/Kilmoyley U11s hurling team who travelled to Millstreet in Cork to take on Cork
side Glounthane. Despite their best efforts the Cork side came out on top in a very
entertaining game. The team was John Godley, Paudie Godley, Padraig O'Connor, Daniel
Collins, Peter Crowe, Jack Sheehy, Niall Meehan, Colman Savage, Fionn
Kavanagh, Padraig Casey, James Lyne, Colin Kirby, Padraig Kearney, Ryan Delaney and
Brendan O'Connor.
Win for U8 and U-10 footballers 3rd July '05
Congratulations to the Kilmoyley boys who lined out with Ardfert in the Us and U10 blitz
winning both competitions at Ballyheigue. Those taking part in the U8s were Sean Curran,
David and Ciaran McCarthy, Robert Collins, Maurice O'Connor, Emmett Meehan (capt.) and
Philip Flaherty. Those taking part in the U10s were Padraig O'Connor, Owen McCarthy, Shane
Monahan and Paudie Godley.
Munster League win for Seniors 3rd July '05 Kilmoyley
continued its good record in this competition with a deserved one point win over Waterford
side Lismore. A number of the Kilmoyley players had helped Kerry to victory over Mayo the
day before in the Christy Ring Cup, but there was still enough energy left in the tank to
finish out this job. There were a number of other players absent due to injuries and
holidays. Weather conditions were very changeable and there was a heavy rain shower before
throwin, but it held off for the remainder of the game, and this made for a lively
encounter. Despite their three hour road trip, the Lismore men started the livelier and
their movement off the ball left the Kilmoyley players reeling. But despite all their good
possession, Lismore failed with a few golden scoring oppportunities.
There was little between the teams in terms of scores after ten minutes with the
visitors edging it by a single point. But following a long delivery from midfield, the
ball somehow deflected to the Kilmoyley net to put four between the teams. With Kilmoyley
playing with the slight advantage of the breeze, it didn't look good at this stage. But
credit to kilmoyley, they stuck to their task and were rewarded five minutes later when
Shane Brick knocked a rebound from his own 20 metre free to the Lismore net to bring the
home side back into the game. By halftime the same gap was still between the teams.
Kilmoyley's play improved somewhat in the second half with Darren Young in particular
winning plenty of possession around the midfield area and setting up his forwards with
good possession. But like Lismore in the first half, the Kilmoyley forwards failed to take
a number of scoreable chances, although Maurice Murnane was unlucky to see a fierce drive
come off the post to safety.Kilmoyley did tap on a few points and when midway through the
half Shane Brick converted another saved 20 metre free to the net to leave four between
the teams, it looked good for the home side.It must be said that referee Alex Morrissey
did a very good job on the game, and he allowed the play flow when he could. With the game
coming to a finish it was obvious that many of the home side were becoming very tired and
Kilmoyley were punished for a number of mistakes, but the whistle was blown in time for
Kilmoyley to hold out by a single point and continue their good run in this competition.
Final score Kilmoyley 2-7 Lismore 1-9.
Kerry U-16s win easily 2nd July '05 Kilmoyley's Niall Young
and Adrian Rouyle (0-2) both at wing back and Andy McCarthy at wing forward (0-4) helped
the Kerry U-16 hurlers to a comfortable 7-18 to 0-2 win over Roscommon at Nenagh on
Saturday. Top scorers were Brian O'Carroll with an outstanding 5-1 and James Flaherty with
1-8.
Masters Hurling 2nd July '05 In their first outing in this
year's competition Kerry were defeated by Galway by 2-14 to 2-6 at Ballyheigue. Kilmoyley
players involved were John B Griffin, Christy Walsh, Fenton Ryan and Joe Walsh.
Minors win again in Cork 27th June '05 Cork City/South-East
Minor "A" Hurling League Kilmoyley 3-9 Sliabh Rua 0-8
Narrow win for Seniors in County League 26th June '05 It's
not often that a team can concede 3-14 and win, but that's what happened as Kilmoyley
edged out Lixnaw on Saturday evening at Lerrig by a single point in a dramatic finish to
this County League fixture. It seemed at halftime that Kilmoyley had done the hard work
when they led by three points after playing into the stiffish breeze. Even after five
minutes of the restart, Kilmoyley had stretched its advantage to eight points and looked
poised for an easy win. But credit to Lixnaw, who stuck to their task and with time almost
up had swung the game around to lead by two points, thanks mainly to an abundance of frees
awarded in their favour. But up stepped Shane Brick to convert a 21 metre free (following
a nasty tackle) to the back of the net to give Kilmoyley a victory that still keeps them
in line for a final place. Final score Kilmoyley 3-15 Lixnaw 3-14.
Eddie Godley Memorial U-10 Blitz 25th June '05 Despite
winning their three first round games against Abbeydorney, Ballyduff and Duagh Kilmoyley
were unable to compete with a much stronger Ballyheigue team that went on to win the
final. Well done to all concerned on a very successful day. The Kilmoyley players that
took part were : Dougie Fitzell, Jason Lowe, David Ryan, Declan O'Connor, John Godley,
Sean Nolan, Colman Savage, Daniel Collins, Luke FitJohnnie Fisher, Norma Brassil, Padraig
O'Connor, Pierse Claffey, James Murphy, Vincent Savage, Paudie Godley, Saidhbh Horgan,
Mairead Fitzgerald, Niall Meehan, Peter Crowe, Mikey Colloty, Florence McCarthy, Eoin
McCarthy
More Glory for Cumann na mBunscoil 23rd June '05 Well done
to Kilmoyley's Naomh Eirc National school's Primary hurling hurling team that defeated
Glenderry of Ballyheigue 7 points to one in the division one final at Austin Stacks park
Tralee. It was a great achievement following their success in the skills competition a few
weeks earlier. Captain Tommy Maunsell was presented with the trophy. Well done to coach
Maurice Fitz, John Godley and teachers involved.

irish Sports Council a hurling academy is to be held over an eight week period commencing

participation.
Senior NK Championship 21st June '05 The draw was made
for the semi finals of this competition and Kilmoyley will face St. Brendans, and Causeway
will play Ballyheigue. Dates to be arranged.
No Joy for Féile team in Cork 18th June '05 Playing in
Division 2 proved to be too difficult for our under 14 team this weekend when they were
beaten in their three games by physically stronger teams from Bandon, Bishopstown and
Derry. Unfortunately in their final game both Conor Fitzell and Sean Dowling got injured
which left the team severely understrength. But credit must go to these young players
(only four of the team are overage for next year) who tried their hearts out despite their
difficult situation and the experience will stand to them in the years ahead.
Under 14s head for Bandon 17th June '05 The Kilmoyley under
14 team headed for Bandon,Cork this morning to compete in Division 2 of the Feile na
nGael. A barbeque was held at the sportsfield yesteday evening, and the players were
presented with bags, togs, socks and personalised tops !It is a tough task for these boys
competing at such a high competitive level but there is no doubt they will do the club and
parish proud. Best of luck to all involved. Their firs game is against their host club St.
Brogans today at 3.30pm.
Seniors draw with Ballyheigue 16th June '05 A large crowd
gathered at Lerrig to see this County League clash between Kilmoyley and Ballyheigue and
despite the dark clouds overhead, the rain held off and as usual the playing surface was
in beautiful condition. Despite missing a number of regulars, Kilmoyley put on their best
display of the year to date in this 1-12 to 1-12 draw. A stiff breeze blew towards the
dressingroom end and Kilmoyley opted to play with it in the first half, Darren Young being
the captain on the night in the absence of Colin Harris. But it took Kilmoyley a long time
to settle down and it was Ballyheigue who enjoyed the lions' share of possession in the
early stages. In the second quarter, Kilmoyley's play did improve but they still had a
number of poor wides. A goal from Micheal Regan settled the team and at one one stage
Kilmoyley led by five points, but by half time the score ended 1-5 to 0-5.
Facing the strong wind, Kilmoyley knew they had to up their game to be in with a
chance of winning, and that's what they did. With the half back line of James McCarthy,
Darren Young and young Edward Fitzgerald (who was hurling very well) dominant in the early
stages, Kilmoyley enjoyed more possession in the forwards, and despite long Ballyheigue
puckouts the defence coped well under pressure. The Murnanes, Maurice and Tom were also
hurling well too as was Shane Brick and Pat Flaherty in the forwards. With five minutes
remaining Kilmoyley were six points ahead. But a number of lapses in concentration meant
Ballyheigue got some handy scores from frees and when they goaled four minutes into injury
time, it looked like they could win it. Another free seven minutes overtime meant the game
ended in a draw.
Intermediates win in Killarney
15th June '05 Kilmoyley's Intermediates advanced to the semi-final of the County
championship with o good victory over Dr. Crokes.
Seniors win in NK Championship QF
11th June '05 Kilmoyley's Seniors defeated Crotta in the quarter-final of the
North Kerry championship last Saturday evening at Lerrig. The game was played in perfect
conditions but the standard of hurling was very poor, especially in the first half. People
who came to the game must have had a few regrets considering the fine evening. However,
the hurling did improve in the second half with both sides scoring some good points from
play.
Disappointingly for Kilmoyley however, were the injuries to Eoin Sheehy who suffered a
dead leg, and Richard Gentleman who damaged an ankle and will be out for a number of
weeks. In the second half Kilmoyley did play considerably better and finished 2-13 to 1-9
winners.
Kilmoyley National School win honours
10th June '05 Congratulations to Kilmoyley's Tommy Maunsell, Tim O'Brien and Sean
Godley who won the County National schools Primary game skills competition with Sean
gaining the first ever perfect score. Well done lads !!
Kerry take on Kildare in Christy Ring
cup 2nd June '05 Kilmoyley has four players starting for Kerry In Saturday's
championship game against Kildare. Paul McCarthy and Eoin Sheehy make their championship
debuts while James McCarthy returns to the team and Colin Harris captains the side. There
are a number of other Kilmoyley players on the subs bench including Shane Brick who also

Kilmoyley article in Cul 4 Kidz
31st May '05 The Irish Times GAA supplement for kids features Kilmoyley hurling
club today in Page 5. There is a brief history of the club and the article focuses on the
club's success at underage level. Also mentioned are Adrian Royle and Conor Fitzell who
are two of Kilmoyley's stars of the future. Copies may be ordered by contacting the
newspaper. The website also gets a mention !
Seniors lose in County League
26th May '05 Kilmoyley's Seniors lost their second game in three to a much more
determined Ballyduff side in Lerrig in the County League. Despite all the recent heavy
rain, underfoot conditions were very good. Both sides were missing a number of players but
it was obvious from an early stage that Kilmoyley were labouring. The game was effectively
over after the third quarter when Ballyduff scored a goal and in the end they ran out easy
winners by 1-12 to 0-5. Already there is plenty to think about for the months ahead.
Leinster Council introduce "Wall
Ball" 25th May '05 In an attempt to keep the game of hurling prospering,
the Leinster council has come up with a unique and innovative idea. Every hurler at some
stage has practised against a wall but "Wall Ball" saw the first competitive
singles competition of its kind played at Laois at first year schools level last week.
60x30 ball-alleys with double sided walls are ideal but few clubs have these facilities.
However Banagher concrete have developed a pre-cast concrete customised hurling wall which
comes with special markings at around E12,000.
Defeat for Intermediates 23rd May
'05 Despite a good first half performance, Kilmoyley's Intermediates went down to
Causeway for a second time this year in the final of the North Kerry League at Lerrig.
Kilmoyley led by 2-5 to 1-2 at halftime, but failed to score in the second half, while
Causeway added 1-6 to win by three points on a scoreline of 2-8 to 2-5.
Mixed Week for Seniors 19th May
'05 The Kilmoyley Seniors had mixed fortunes during the week. On Sunday last they
lost their first game of the year to Causeway in the County League at Austin Stack park in
a low scoring game. Although missing a number of key players, Kilmoyley still struggled
throughout to a much more determined Causeway side. Final score 0-11 to 0-5.
On Thursday evening at Abbeydorney, the Seniors defeated the locals also in the County
League, and put in a much improved display to win by 1-14 to 0-9.
Wins for Intermediates and U11s
11th May '05 Kilmoyley teams enjoyed two wins on Wednesday evening. The
Intermediates got back to winning ways by easily defeating Kenmare in the County League
Div2 at Caherslee, while the U11s also won comprehensively by 2-8 to 1-3 defeating
Ballyduff in the North Kerry League.
Dramatic win for Kilmoyley in Féile
10th May '05 Kilmoyley bridged a 14 year gap this evening when they won the U-14
Féile na nGael title in an exciting and very entertaining game with neighbours Causeway,
who themselves hadn't won the title since 1989. Both teams will still travel to the
National finals in Cork next month with Kilmoyley competing in Division 2. They will be
hosted by the Bandon club and as well as playing the locals they will also be playing
against Bishopstown and Derry. (Match Report)
Féile na nGael 8th May '05
Kilmoyley qualified for the final of the Féile na nGael with a comprehensive win over
Ballyheigue at Ardfert yesterday. Played before a large crowd in ideal conditions,
Kilmoyley were always in control and led comfortably at half time, having faced a stiffish
breeze in the first period. Despite two Ballyheigue goals midway through the second half,
Kilmoyley pressed home their advantage with Conor Fitzell scoring 2-6 and in the end it
was a comprehensive win for Kilmoyley by 3-15 to 2-4. But another all round team
performance will be required in the final if Kilmoyley are to win their first Féile since
1991 when Pat Deenihan was captain.
The final takes place on Tuesday 10th May at Austin Stack park at 6.30.
Wedding Result 8th May '05 Congratulations and best wishes
to Kilmoyley hurler Richard Gentleman and Ballyheigue native Gillian Whyte who got married
on Saturday in Ballyheigue. Richard has played hurling with Kilmoyley from U12 to Senior
level and has been a vital part of the four in a row Championship winning team. Best of
luck to both in the years ahead.
Defeat for minors and U16s 5th May '05 St. Brendans got the better of
both Kilmoyley's U16s and minor teams during the week in the finals of the North Kerry and
County League finals respectively. The minors particularly were disappointing suffering an
eight point defeat by 1-11 to 1-3 and finishing the game with thirteen players.
Seniors qualify for NKL final 25th April '05 The Kilmoyley Seniors
qualified for the North Kerry League final by defeating St. Brendans in the semi-final at
Lerrig on Monday evening by 5-9 to 1-10. It was a very lively and entertaining game of
hurling played before a large crowd in ideal conditions and with six goals there was
plenty to keep the crows enthusiastic. Kilmoyley started without Shane Brick and Maurice
Murnane but welcomed back Colin Harris after his two month layoff. St. Brendans started
with a slight breeze and opened the scoring with a free. But the Kilmoyley forwards were
proving difficult to handle, with Tom Murnane, Richard Gentleman and Micheal Regan causing
most trouble for their markers. At midfield, Darren Young was winning a lot of ball while
Eoin Sheehy and Paul McCarthy were the pick of the defence.Goals from Tom Murnane (2 - the
first an absolute beauty) and Richard Gentleman (1) enabled the home side to establish a
3-7 to 0-6 halfime lead.
St. Brendans started the brighter in the second half and quickly added two points to
reduce the deficit. But with Kilmoyley's midfield winning the majority of possession in
the early stages there was plenty of ball for the forwards. Tom Murnane added a further
two points, one from play and one a free and then set up Richard Gentleman for his second
goal to more or less put the result beyond doubt. But almost immediately St. Brendans
broke up field, and despite a good initial save from keeper Brendan Harris, the rebound
was blasted to the roof of the net. Scores were at a premium in the final ten minutes but
the most significant was a third goal from Richard Gentleman. St. Brendans tried to the
end adding another couple of points and it was good to see Eamon Ferris making a long
overdue comeback. But in the end the Kilmoyley defence held out and conceded no further
goals. Final Score 3-9 to 1-10.
Kilmoyley's opponents in the final are Ballyduff who easily overcame Causeway in
the other semifinal.
Another win for Minors 24th April '05 Another long trip to
Cork proved fruitful for the minors as they ran out easy winners over WhiteChurch in the
Cork City division MHL by 2-19 to 1-6.
Féile na nGael 23rd April '05 The Kilmoyley U-14 team
qualified for the final of the Féile na nGael after topping their four-team group in
Ardfert today. Played in a blitz format, with three games of twenty minutes a half for
each team, Kilmoyley easily disposed of a weakened St. Brendans side in the first game. It
was very different for the second match though, with Crotta O'Neills really putting it up
to the boys. In the end the teams could not be separated and the game finished level.
Kilmoyley needed to win their final game to be sure of qualifying and neighbours
Abbeydorney were the opposition. After a nervous start, there was little to separate the
teams, but Conor Fitzell scored a great individual goal for Kilmoyley before half time to
push us in front. With the aid of the breeze in the second half, the Kilmoyley boys were
always in command and added a number of points to ease to victory.
Kilmoyley have a proud tradition in this competition, having twice won All-Ireland titles,
and it is great to see that tradition being continued with a great bunch of players. Well
done to all concerned.
Hurling roundup 22nd April '05 The Seniors got a walkover
from Lixnaw in the final group match of the NKL. They will now play St. Brendans this
Monday evening in the semi-final.
The under 16 team have qualified to play St. Brendans in the final of the NKL also.
The Intermediates lost to Causeway in the semi-final of the NKL last Wednesday at Lerrig
following a poor display.
The Kerry hurlers play their final league game of the year at Lerrig tomorrow when they
face Derry at 2.30. Neither team has anything to play for, and the Kerry management are
using the opportunity to try out some new players. Kilmoyley's Colin Harris once again
captains the side.
The minors play Whitechurch in Whitechurch this Sunday at 1.30 in the Cork city division
league. The team are creating quite a stir on Leeside and there is great admiration for
the effort being put in by all involved. They will be up against it though as Whitechurch
have a Cork minor at midfield. Here's hoping for a fourth win.
Kerry hurlers suffer heavy defeat 18th April '05 Due to the
heavy rain from the night before, the venue for this game was switched from Birr to
Tullamore. The change of venue did not upset the Kerry boys for there was only a point
separating the teams after twenty minutes. However folowing three yellow cards in quick
succession to Kerry defenders, Offaly took full advantage, and they finished the half
strongly to go in 3-8 to 0-5 at the break. It was more of the same in the second half with
Offaly full forward Joe Brady scoring four goals. Amazingly all of Offaly's 8-18 scores
came from play while Kerry could only manage two points. Kerry are now out of contention
for the final and the final game is at home against Derry next week.
Minors win in Cork again 16th
April '05 Kilmoyley's minors made it three wins in a row this Saturday evening in
the Cork City division MHL against nemo Rangers. Although they struggled with Nemo's
running game for long periods of the match, Kilmoyley came good in the end with a late
Joseph o'Sullivan goal to edge out the home side 3-8 to 2-9. There is great credit due to
all players and mentors involved who have made a great effort against all the odds over
the last few weeks to get Kilmoyley to this level in Cork.
Hurling update 15th April '05
Kilmoyley's under 16s drew with Ballyheigue on Thursday evening in the NK League on a
scoreline of 2-7 apiece.
Kilmoyley's Intermediates were due to play St. Brendans in Ardfert in the third round of
the NKL on Wednesday evening but the referee failed to show and as a result the game was
not played.
Kilmoyley's minors will play Nemo Rangers in the 3rd round of the
Seandun-Carrighdoun Minor Hurling League @ 7pm in St Vincents Ground, Hollyhill on
Saturday. They are going for their third straight win in the competition.
Kilmoyley have four representatives once again on the Kerry team for next weekend's away
game against Offaly. Brendan Harris retains his place in goals, while there is a welcome
return for captain Colin Harris at centre back. Eoin Sheehy switches to midfield with Tom
Murnane moving to wing forward from the centre. Paul McCarthy misses out while Shane Brick
is still recovering from injury.
Seniors win in NKL 11th April '05 The Seniors continued their good
start to the season with a hard earned win over neighbours Causeway in this second round
North Kerry league tie, and in the process moved to the top of the group. Despite missing
a number of regulars, Kilmoyley still fielded a strong team. The North Kerry Board don't
often get praised for its initiative but they must be congratulated on appointing Pat
Moore from Waterfors to referee the game, and as a result there were fewer controversial
incidents in the game. Facing the breeze in the first half Kilmoyley were well in control
in the first quarter and had the scores level at two points apiece. But a loose ball was
knocked to the back of the Kilmoyley net to give Causeway the lead until half time 1-3 to
0-5, with Tom Murnane getting all Kilmoyley's scores from frees.
Kilmoyley continued to dominate early in the second half but failed to score. A
breakaway goal by Causeway moved them four points clear, but this was their final score of
the game. Tom Murnane was unerring from frees, and when Micheal Regan latched onto a loose
ball in the Causeway square to scrape the ball home for a goal, the result was never in
doubt. It was not vintage Kilmoyley but on the night they did enough to get the
result.Final score Kilmoyley 1-11 Causeway 2-3
In the other game in Division one Abbeydorney defeated Lixnaw.
Minors second win in Cork 10th April '05 Kilmoyley's minors continued
their good form with an excellent display and an impressive 3-19 to 1-6 win over
Carrigaline in the Cork city division Minor hurling league. More details later.
Kerry score 6-10 .... and lose 10th April '05 Despite scoring a
whopping total of 6-10 against Westmeath in the first game of phase 2 of the Allianz NHL,
Kerry still ended second best to the visitors who scored 4-18 at Lerrig. Kerry led by a
goal at half time and could have been further ahead, but conceded a soft goal before half
time to leave Westmeath back into the game. And despite adding only one point in the
second half, Kerry scored three goals but conceded a whoppping total of 1-12. Kilmoyley
had four players on the fifteen that finished the game with Darren Young being introdiced
as substitute. Offaly next week away.
Shock of the day came in Carlow where the home side defeated hot favourites Offaly.
Kerry hurlers play Westmeath in Lerrig 7th April '05 Kilmoyley have
four players on the starting fifteen that fact Westmeath at Austin Stack park this Sunday
in the first game of Phase 2 of the Allianz NHL. Paul McCarthy at corner back, Eoin Sheehy
at centreback and Tom Murnane at centre forward keep their places on the team with Brendan
Harris moving into goals. Shane Brick and Colin Harris are still out through injury.
Intermediates win in NKL 6th April '05 In this second round North
Kerry league game Kilmoyley maintained its unbeaten run in a low scoring 1-6 to 0-2 win
over Abbeydorney.
Seniors get off to winning start 5th April '05 It wasn't pretty, but
in the end Kilmoyley defeated Abbeydorney in this first round clash of the North Kerry
League on a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-10. Conditions were very cold and wet at Lerrig and the
stop-start interruptions of a ref's whistle didn't help either.
Abbeydorney, playing with a strong breeze scored the first two points from frees, but
Darren Young scored a goal after ten minutes to edge the home side in front. By half time,
there was still only a point in the game with Kilmoyley holding the slight advantage. It
took Kilmoyley a while to get going after the interval and the visitors drew level as a
result. But the introduction of Richard Gentleman was signifcant, as he goaled after some
good build up play to push Kilmoyley three points ahead, a lead they were to hold despite
a good late charge by Abbeydorney.
AIB Senior hurling championship draw 5th April '05 The draw took place
last night for the preliminary round of the county hurling championship. Four teams
(Kenmare, Crotta, Lixnaw and Abbeydorney) will contest for the final three places in the
quarterfinals. At the request of the clubs, the draw for the QF will not take place until
after the preliminary round of the Christy Ring cup. The draw was as follows :- Crotta v
O'Dorney, Kenmare v Lixnaw. The losers of these two games will play each other to decide
the final quarterfinal team. Games will take place on w/e 6th/7th August.
Historic win for Kilmoyley minors 4th April '05 Kilmoyley made the
long journey to Minane Bridge in Cork yesterday where they played local side Tracton in
the first round of the Cork City Division Seandún-Carrigdhoun MHL. Permission had been
granted by the Kerry County Board, the Munster Council and the Seandún division clubs and
chairman Derek Connolly who all welcomed the move.
With only three teams in Division one of Kerry's MHL it was important that this
team continued to play regularly at a high level and despite the huge effort required from
players and mentors it was an encouraging start to the competition. It was the first time
that a Kerry minor club team has competed in a competition in Cork and With some good
performances from Niall Young, Andy McCarthy, Declan Ryan, Edward Fitzgerald and Seanie
Murnane Kilmoyley won on a scoreline of 3-8 to 0-5. (Read Evening Echo Report)
Seniors play O'Dorney in NKL 4th April '05 The Senior team take on
neighbours Abbeydorney this evening in the first round of the North Kerry League. Unlike
the previous two years, players on the county hurling panel are eligible to play in this
competition. This game is a rematch of last years final, a game that Kilmoyley won, but
Shane Brick will miss tonight's game because of injury.
AIB Senior County Championship Draw 4th April '05 The AIB Senior
hurling and football championship draws take place tonight with nine teams participating
in the hurling and twenty in the football championships. Kilmoyley, as champions have
received a bye into the quarter-final while South Kerry, Crotta, Abbeydorney and Lixnaw
will play off to see who will not progress to the quarter-final which will take place on
the weekend of August 6th/7th.
Kerry advance to Phase two .... but only just 27th March'05 The
absense of Shane Brick was very noticeable as Kerry struggled to defeat a determined
London side at Austin Stack Park Tralee last Sunday. Kerry's cause was also helped early
in the second half when London's best player and influential midfielder had to leave the
game because of injury. Kerry now advance with Carlow and Meath to meet Offaly, Derry and
Westmeath in the next phase.
However, even in the unlikely event that Kerry was to win promotion from Division 2,
there is a good chance that the current league structure will be overhauled due to the
many one-sided, other overwhelming victories, and general lack of public interest in the
competition this year.
County Minor hurling League 21st March'05 The Kilmoyley minors got
their year off to a good start when they enjoyed a narrow one point win over neighbours
St. Brendans in the first round of the Keane's SuperValu Co. MHL Div.1 on a scoreline of
3-7 to 1-12 last Sunday. Unfortunately, there are only three teams in Division 1 and it is
further indication of the decline of the game in the county.
Kerry hurlers defeat Wiclow at Lerrig 20th March'05 A large crowd
watched Kerry ease to victory over Wicklow at Lerrig on Sunday on a scoreline of 5-24 to
2-3. Kerry faced a stiff breeze in the first half and led comfortably by 2-8 to 0-1 after
twenty minutes. But Wicklow narrowed the gap to five points before Kerry added three more
points before half time to lead by 2-11 to 2-3. Wicklow were held scoreless for the second
half as Kerry, without ever reaching top gear, eased to a comfortable victory. Kilmoyley's
Tom Murnane at centre forward scored five points from play in his first game in that
position. Once again, the yellow card issue was a mjor talking point with seven players
being shown the line, three from Kerry (Andrew Keane's was his third in four games!).
A victory against London next week will ensure that Kerry advance to the second phase.
North Kerry Championship 15th March'05 Kilmoyley' Senior and
Intermediates have both been drawn to meet Crotta in the quarter finals of the 2005 Senior
and Intermediate championships. The fixtures are down for May. (The 2004 Senior final is
due to be played between Lixnaw and Ballyduff soon)
Speedy Recovery 14th March'05 Best Wishes to Kilmoyley and Kerry
captain Colin Harris who is recovering from an appendix operation last Friday. As a result
Colin missed the NHL game against Meath and will be out for a possible four to five weeks.
SPOT
THE DIFFERENCE
Second League loss for Kerry hurlers 14th March'05 The Kerry hurlers
returned from their trip to Navan with no points following a second narrow defeat in the
Allianz NHL Div 2B to Meath on a scoreling of 3-13 to 3-12. Kilmoyley's Tom Murnane and
Shane scored a goal apiece but a strong second half display from the Royal men saw them
turn a five point half time defecit into a one point win. The Kerry management have said
that their emphasis is on the Christy Ring Cup later in the year, so it is difficult to
expect the players to come through in these tight matches. Kerry must now win their
remaining games against Wicklow and London to be assured of advancing to the next phase of
more competitive games against the likes of Offaly and Westmeath.
Coaching for Kilmoyley 11th
March'05 Munster hurling coach Michael Guilfoyle from Clare will be in Lerrig
this Saturday morning, training any wouldbe underage coaches the secrets of the game.
Underage hurling now starts at under 8 and runs right through to under 21 level. While the
population in Kilmoyley is small relative to other parishes, there is great enthusiasm
among those involved in the game which more than makes up for our lack of numbers. Kerry
coach Maurice Leahy will also be providing a beginners course next Monday at the club for
those interested.
DO YOU REMEMBER - GAA Shocks of 2003
1. Monaghan 0-13 Armagh 0-9
The All Ireland Champions are shocked by rank outsiders Monaghan in the first defence of
their Ulster crown.
2. Limerick 0-16 Cork 0-6
Munster Champions Cork are stripped of their crown as Limerick convincingly advance to the
Munster semi-final.
3. Clare 2-17 Tipperary 0-14
League finalists Tipperary are red hot favourites not only to beat Clare, but to win the
Munster Championship. Two first half goals for the Banner leave the pundits red-faced.
4. Dunloy 1-14 Mount Sion 1-13
A late Allistar Elliot free seals victory for the men from Antrim over a strongly fancied
and Ken McGrath inspired Mount Sion in the All-Ireland Club championship semi-final.
5. Antrim 2-9 Cavan 1-10
Two goals from Manager’s son Darren O’Hare give Antrim only their second Ulster
Championship victory in over 20 years.
Hurling News 10th March'05 The Kerry hurlers take on Meath in round 3
of the Allianz NHL at Navan this Sunday. The team shows a number of changes from the one
that easily beat Sligo in round 2. Kilmoyley's Tom Murnane makes his first competitive
start in the unfamiliar role of fullforward, and Eoin Sheehy switches to centre back.
Captain Colin Harris misses out through illness.
Former allstar and Kilkenny hurler DJ Carey makes his first ever start at centre back in
this weekend's game against Laois. Carey impressed the selectors in a charity game against
Tipperary last weekend.
Limerick's hurlers trained for the first time under temporary manager and former County
star Joe McKenna yesterday morning at 7am at the University of Limerick. Current Thurles
Sarsfields and former Newtownshandrum coach Ger Cunningham is also lending some temporary
expertise to their cause.
No Gaelic Gear deal for Kerry 8th March'05 The Kerry County Board has
said that there will be no deal with sportsgear company Gaelic Gear, which according to a
Press Release earlier could have been worth a record €1 million. However, Kerry
County Board chairman Sean Walsh in a statement said that there had been no meeting
between the two parties, and no deal had beenstruck. O'Neills currently provide Kerry's
equipment.
Did you know that when the Kerry hurlers won their only All-Ireland hurling title in 1891,
they wore white jerseys with an inscription of "Up Kerry" on the chests,
and they played barefoot, without the luxury of football boots.
Hurling department to be established 2nd March'05 Croke Park has
announced that plans to set up a "hurling department" with its own manager are
at an advanced stage. The proposal by the HDC would see the department oversee the
coaching and promotion of the game, and make County Boards responsible for the spending of
funds specifically for hurling more accountable. It is estimated that with the additional
government funding, there could be an extra €2.5 million spent on coaching over two
or three years.
Kerry win first NHL points 27th Feb '05 Kerry enjoyed a seventeen
point victory over Sligo at Lerrig to open their Allianz NHL account. Shane Brick was
Kerry's main scorer with 1-7 but Kerry had ten different scorers in total. For the second
game in a row, Kilmoyley's Colin Harris and Eoin Sheehy also scored, while Richard
Gentleman and Paul McCarthy were introduced as substitutes. Final score Kerry 6-19 Sligo
4-8.
Willie is new Munster PRO 26th
Feb '05 Congratulations to Willie O'Connor who was elected the new Munster GAA
PRO, defeating Tipp candidate Liz Howard by 36 votes to 17. He will continue with his
current post of Kerry County Board PRO. Willie has an excellent weekly GAA column in The
Kerryman, and has always given hurling in the county much needed coverage.
Year's first managerial casualty
25th Feb '05 Meath's hurling management team have resigned following two
embarrassing recent defeats to DIT and London. Kerry are due to play Meath next month in
the Allianz NHL.
One change for Kerry hurlers 24th Feb '05 There is one change to the
Kerry Senior hurling hurling team for this weekend's game against Sligo at Lerrig. Michael
Conway comes in at midfield to partner Eoin Sheehy, with Kilmoyley's Darren Young making
way from the corner forward position and Dr. Crokes' Brian Darcy switching to full
forward. Kerry will be hoping to avoid the problems encountered in last week's defeat to
Carlow when four yellow cards were issued. Kerry should still prove too strong despite
Sligo showing some promising form with a draw against Wicklow last weekend. Throw in
1.30pm.
New Rules making hurling dangerous 24th Feb '05 (Irish Examiner
Reports) HURLING has become a more dangerous game under the experimental rules, according
to Wexford manager Seamus Murphy.
The controversial rules, introduced for the NHL, have already been lambasted after only
one series of games.
Murphy agrees the regulations are draining the game of its physicality and intensity. He
believes players would be tempted to quit if the situation was allowed to continue
long-term. “The body challenge is a skill in the game and it should be encouraged. I
believe the new rules increase the danger of players getting injured, rather than making
the game safer", according to Murphy. “With these rules, players tend to stand
off the man in possession that bit more in case they’re sent to the line for a small
bit of contact and that increases the chances of him getting a slap with a swing of a
hurl.
“In any sport, it’s the same. If you stand off a man the chances of you
getting hurt are much greater. It’s the same in soccer, football or hurling. Players
can’t go full-blooded into challenges and that’s a problem.
“Take the big games in Croke Park over the last five or six years and see how many
serious injuries occurred in that time. Not many. Why should we be changing the rules?
Kerry hurlers and lady footballers to play in Lerrig 22nd Feb '05 This
Sunday at Lerrig the Kerry hurlers host Sligo in round 2 of the Allianz NHL. Sligo earned
a surprise draw with Wicklow last weekend, but Kerry would still be favourites to win.
Also, the Kerry lady footballers will play at Lerrig as part of a double bill which should
draw a large attendance.
Kerry beaten by Carlow in NHL opener 20th Feb'05 Kilmoyley had six
players in action for the Kerry hurlers at Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow in their first round
tie against the home side. Despite a record victory over the same opposition last year,
Kerry travelled in hope rather than expectation mainly due to the lack of preparation and
Carlow's recent run of form in the Kehoe Cup. However, Kerry can still progress to the
next phase despite this defeat.
Once again Shane Brick was Kerry's high scorer, but it was South Kerry's Padraig
Randles that made the biggest contribution from play scoring 1-2. Kilmoyley's Eoin Sheehy
and Darren Young got late call ups to start while Paul McCarthy and Sean Maunsell were
introduced during the game after four Kerry players were issued yellow cards. Final score
Carlow 2-11 Kerry 1-11.
Two Kilmoyley players to start for Kerry 18th Feb'05 Colin Harris
(captain) and Shane Brick will be Kilmoyley's only representatives to start for Kerry this
weekend against Carlow in the National League opener. Eight of the team that started
against Cork in the 2004 Munster championship will again line out. Interestingly, three
South Kerry players make the starting team, while Brendan Harris, Darren Young, Sean
Maunsell and Causeway's John Mike Dooley are substitutes.
All-Ireland Ladies Champions to play at Lerrig 4th Feb'05 Following
their disappointing defeat away to Cork last weekend, the Kerry ladies footballers play
host to All-Ireland champions Galway at Lerrig this Sunday. Kilmoyley's Jackie Murnane is
due to line out at corner back.
Kilmoyley Captain for 2005
29th Jan '05 At Kilmoyley's annual GAA convention held at the clubrooms on
Saturday evening Colin Harris was nominated as Kilmoyley Senior captain for 2005. Colin is
also captain of the Kerry Senior hurling team for 2005 and hopefully he will be bringing
home plenty of silverware. At the Kilmoyley Social, Colin was awarded the Player of the
Year trophy.
Defeat for Kilmoyley against Na
Piarsaigh 29th Jan '05 Despite a very brave effort Kilmoyley were edged out
by Na Piarsaigh of Cork by a single point having led throughout the game until the closing
stages. Kilmoyley led by four points at half time but only added two points in a low
scoring second half. Despite missing a number of players, it was a very encouraging
performance and perhaps in the end Na Piarsaigh had a little more fitness to finish
stronger. Final score Kilmoyley 2-8 Na Piarsaigh 1-12 (Match Report)
Brick heads for Antrim 26th Jan '05 Antrim hurling boss
Dinny Cahill has announced a new backroom team for the coming season. Gort na Mona's
Gerard Holden, who was a senior panellist in the early 1990s, and Dunloy's Malachy Elliott
have been appointed as selectors while Cahill has enlisted Kerry-native Noel Brick as
physical trainer (anyone know him ?).
Kilmoyley GAA Social 24th Jan '05 Once again Kilmoyley held
a very successful and enjoyable GAA Social at Ballygarry House Hotel on Saturday night.
With over 300 in attendance including new County Board Vice Chairman Gerald Whyte, the
main focus of attention was the presentation of County championship and league medals to
the Seniors. But there were also presentations to our U-15s, U16s and minors who too
enjoyed success during the year. Gerald Whyte noted that Kilmoyley's four-in-a-row was a
unique achievement in the country as we were the first club in the 21st century to do so !
The Credit Union awarded a Man of the Match trophy to Shane Brick for his display against
Causeway and Colin Harris was awarded Player of the Year and will be captain of both club
and county for the year ahead. Well done to all on a very successful night.
Upcoming game 12th Jan '05 Kilmoyley's first Senior game of
the year is due to be played on Saturday 29th January against Na Piarsaigh of Cork in the
semi-final of the Munster League in Millstreet at 2pm. Na Piarsaigh are of course current
Cork Senior champions and it would be a mammoth task for Kilmoyley to defeat them.
Kerry hurling Management 10th Jan '05 Former Lixaw trainer
and Rathkeale native Jerry Molyneaux is the new manager of the Kerry hurling team.
Kilmoyley's Denis Flaherty, Lixnaw's Mike McKenna, Causeway's DJ Leahy and one other
official will assist as selectors. The squad had its first practice session at Ballyheigue
yesterday with a large attendance. In all, ten Kilmoyley players were contacted to join
the panel which speaks volumes for the quality of the players in the squad. Best of luck
to all in the weeks and months ahead. the first game takes place away to Carlow next month
Upcoming events 10th Jan '05 The Annual Kilmoyley GAA
Social takes place on Saturday 22nd January at Ballygarry Hotel. As usual a large
attendance is expected and if people are interested in attending, they shouls contact club
officials this week to avoid disappointment.
The annual convention of the hurling club takes place the following week on the
29th January in the clubrooms at 8pm sharp. Anyone seeking to be elected to position
within the club or seeking to discuss a motion should forward details to club Secretary
Joe Walsh.
