The Life and Times of Christy Walsh

After the final whistle blew to signal the end of the 2001 county hurling
final one of the first players I met was Christy Walsh. Christy is a fairly
cool customer at the best of times but on this occasion the emotion and joy
got to him and he was left speechless. The long overdue which had kept him
hurling when others had called it a day had finally been achieved. As he
told Weeshie Fogarty the Radio Kerry interviewer later, that not alone was the monkey off the back of the hurling club but the whole Dublin Zoo was gone.

The fact that Kilmoyley had bridged a thirty year gap was enough to raise
the spirit of the whole parish, but for all followers of the game in the
county it was Christy Walsh with a championship medal to his credit who was
the chief focus of attention. Never was a player more deserving of his
moment of glory. He has been a wonderful servant to Kilmoyley and Kerry for
many years on the hurling fields and to Ardfert and St Brendan's in
football. Christy was an outstanding under age player and was Kerry's
representative in the Feile na nGael skills competition in Cork in 1971
where he finished a very credible fourth. He had won every honour in the
county, but his two previous county final appearances ended in defeat. Little
did he or any Kilmoyley person realise that Kilmoyley would not even reach a
county final from 1988 to 2000. Christy probably felt that his chance was
gone of getting his hands on that elusive medal. However with his brother
Joe as trainer, John Meyler as coach and an excellent back up team of
workers, this was to prove Kilmoyley's and Christy's year.

Christy was a player of exceptional dedication and ability and this was
recognised on two occasions by the Munster hurling selectors, 1986 and 1992. He came on as a sub in the Railway Cup final 1992 and contributed 1-1 in the victory over Ulster. In 1994 he transferred to Bennetsbridge, Co Killkenny and lost the Intermediate final that year. He won a Senior Football medal with Dicksboro but this was poor consolation for the 1992 defeat in the
Kerry football final when he captained St Brendan's. Christy was an
outstanding player for Causeway Comprehensive where he received his second level education and was helped on his way by Gearóid de Faoite and John Leahy. He had further success with UCC in the early eighties where he won division 1 league and Fitzgibbon Cup medals.

Christy played most of his hurling from centre field but in recent times he
has taken up residence at full forward where he has made life very
uncomfortable for the local full backs. As late as last Sunday (14th Oct 2001) he gave a five star display, scoring 3-2 himself and setting up many chances for his younger team mates in the demolition of Crotta in the County League Final.


Christy still resides in Bennetsbridge with his wife Trish and children
Eleanor and Maurice. Despite being on the road on a daily basis in his job as a salesman he never had any difficulty making the long trip to Kerry to play his hurling. His dedication, style of play, standard of sportsmanship and commitment to Kilmoyley and Kerry is a source of inspiration to the many colleagues and young players in the parish. He loves the challenge of taking on the best and has an excellent record against some of the finest hurlers in the
country. Today's game against the Rockies will no doubt give Christy one
more chance to test himself against the best. He had the added satisfaction of having his younger brother Joe collecting his first championship medal after coming out of retirement to man the last line of defence with distinction.

Christy has of course added two more county championship medals in 2002 and 2003. In winning the 2002 final, Kilmoyley scored a record sixteen points. It was fitting that Christy scored the record score. In the Munster championship game against Toomevara in 2003 in Thurles, Christy was Kilmoyley's outstanding player on the day. After winning a Munster league medal in November 2003 Christy hinted that it might be time for him to hang up his boots. But an opinion poll on this website suggested otherwise - eighty percent said he would be mad to retire. And here he is in 2004 still going strong.

Regardless of how long more Christy soldiers on he has made his mark and will go down in Kerry hurling history as one of the finest exponents of the game that the county has ever seen and a very worthy winner of his County Championship and Munster league medals.
