Sunday 16th November 2003 Final Credit Union Co. League (Austin Stack)
Kilmoyley
0-11 Causeway 1-05
After waiting five months since
the last County League game, Kilmoyley got its chance to make up for last years
disappointing County League final display by beating Causeway in the 2003 final by three
points. The game was played after the County minor hurling final at Austin Stack park
where Ballyduff edged out Ardfert by one point. Weather conditions were ideal for hurling
on the day, but the underfoot conditions were wet and sticky and this didn't allow for
very good hurling. It was Causeway that started the better with a pointed free inside the
first two minutes. Kilmoyley was slow to settle and it was noticeable that we were in
trouble in many positions at this stage. After five minutes a long puckout broke in behind
three Kilmoyley defenders, and JM Dooley goaled to put Causeway 1-1 to no score in front.
Christy Walsh was working hard at fullforward but was getting little support and as a
result Kilmoyley found it difficult to score. Two long range frees put Causeway 1-3 to nil
up after fifteen minutes and it didn't look good. But you kind of sensed that Kilmoyley
would come into the game at some stage and that they did. Colin Harris and Sean Griffin
switched positions and this helped tighten up the defense and deliverde more ball to the
Kilmoyley forwards. Tom Murnane opened Kilmoyley's scoring with a well taken point and
added another a while later. Padraig O'Sullivan added another from play to reduce the gap
as did Colin Harris after his switch. But the Causeway backs defended well and kept the
pressure on. But it also concede a number of frees which were gratefully converted by
Ollie Diggin. By half time Kilmoyley were back level 0-6 to 1-3 having kept Causeway
scoreless for the final fifteen minutes.
Kimoyley were hoping to up the
performance for the second half, and Billy Brick was introduced for Pat Deenihan.
Initially it was a struggle to gain any momentum but our half back line was in control
(most of the time) and Causeway's scoring opportunities were limited. Causeway was first
to score when Dooley pointed from a close in free after he was fouled. Kilmoyley's forward
were getting a lot of possession but some poor control and wasteful shooting meant that
the score didn't change until Ollie Diggin pointed a free. It was only in the 46th minute
that Kilmoyley eventually went in front from another pointed free. At this stage it looked
as though Kilmoyley could cruise to victory as in the championship final, but the
Kilmoyley forwards continued to squander chances when it looked easier to score. Maurice
Murnane scored the best point of the day from long range to stretch Kilmoyley's lead with
ten minutes remaining. It was frantic stuff at the end with Causeway doing everything to
get back into the game. Joe Walsh made a couple of good saves to keep Kilmoyley ahead, and
although Dooley pointed another close in free, Kilmoyley ran out three point winners.
Christy Walsh caught some great ball on the "forty" near the end and sub Joe
Murnane also made a good contribution for the final fifteen minutes. So in the end, a good
win for Kilmoyley, even if it wasn't the prettiest. Ref Brendan Dunne kept the game
flowing as well as could be hoped, and although there were four or five yellow cards there
was nobody injured. Afterwards Maurice Murnane was presented the cup by County Board
Vice-Chairman Jerome Conway, and as we have become accustomed to, the Kilmoyley supporters
were very vocal in their support. After a long hard year it was still only Kimoyley's
second trophy of the year - but at least they are the two big trophys !
Monday 30th June 2003 Round 6
Credit Union County League (Lerrig)
Kilmoyley
0-10 Lixnaw 1-09
Kilmoyley lost their first game
of the year against Lixnaw and can have no complaints about the manner of their defeat, as
they were beaten by the better team on the night. The game was only played over fifty
minutes as Lixnaw failed to show on time. Kilmoyley scored early through captain Maurice
Murnane but Lixnaw, through Micheal Conway frees stayed in touch. Richard Gentleman and
Eoin Sheehy pointed for Kilmoyley, who were not playing at all well. At half time the teams
were level at six points each.
Full Back Padraig Regan was
reaplaced at half time with an ankle injury, to be replaced by Ian Brick who did not make
any noticeable impression on the game. Kimoyley's forwards gave away numerous silly frees
to put their defence under pressure.Lixnaw goaled with ten minutes to go through Pat Hogan
after keeper Joe Walsh failed to collect a cross field ball. In the end Kilmoyley could
not apply enough pressure to score the winning goal.
So after playing a fifty minute
game Kilmoyley found themselves sucking their thumbs and must now win the final two games
to be assured of a place in the final. All credit to Lixnaw who were the hungrier on the
night.
Saturday 14th June 2003 Round 5
Credit Union County League (Kilgarvan)
Kilmoyley
2-14 Kenmare 0-10
Kilmoyley made the long journey
to Kilgarvan last Saturday evening to play Kenmare and try to maintain their unbeaten run
in the competition. The pitch was in very poor condition and this certainly had a bearing
on the game early on as there was no score for the first ten minutes. Maurice Murnane
scored the first three points of the game, two from play before Mike Foley opened
Kenmare's scoring with a long range free. Kilmoyley's hurling did improve and Micheal
Regan hit a rasping shot past the Kenmare goalie. Kilmoyley's defence was relaxed at times
and Kenmare, mainly through Mike Foley tagged on a number of points although they never
threatening the Kilmoyley goals. Kilmoyley led by five points at half time.
Kilmoyley were slow enough to get
going again, and Kenmare's half back line, particularly Connie Cremin, were hurling well
in quenching any Kilmoyley attacks. Both teams exchanged a number of points and Kenmare
threated Kilmoyley's goal more often with Joe Walsh doing well between the posts. Up front
Chrsty Walsh was trying hard and Darren Young made a number of good reuns from midfield.
Kilmoyley made a number of telling substitution late in the second half with Tom Murnane
goaling and Gerald Carroll clearing the ball off Kilmoyley's goal line. Thankfully, there
were no injuries in the game. After the game the Kilmoyley team were well looked after at
Jackie Healy Rae's pub in the village.
Sunday
1st June 2003 Round 4 Credit
Union County League (O'Dorney)
Kilmoyley
3-8 Abbeydorney 1-11
The North Kerry League finalists
met once again in a close encounter but the result was the same (on the field anyway).
Some of the Kilmoyley players had lined out for Kerry on the day before while others were
showing the effects of Leslie Horgan's wedding from the night before. Kilmoyley played
with the breeze in the first half but were slow to settle into proceedings. The first
score was a goal from Sean Maunsell who latched onto a loose ball following good work from
Darren Young. Billy Brick at full forward pointed bu ODorney replied immediately with
another. Sean Griffin's good run was rewarded when the Abbeydorney keeper fumbled from
Darren Young's shot to leave Kilmoyley six points up after only three scores. The home
team added a few more points but Kilmoyley replied through Eoin Sheehy and Ollie Diggins
to leave them 2-4 to 0-5 up at half time.
Abbeydorney, with wind advantage
scored first. But it was to be the only score for ten minutes as the play got very
scrappy. But, Kilmoyley got the score of the game when Billy Brick fed the onrushing Ollie
Diggins who roofed the ball to the net to leave Kilmoyley weel ahead. But with Sean
Fitzgerald substituted at half time through injury, the Kilmoyley defence got tired as the
half wore on and concede a number of frees to allow Abbeydorney back into the game. With
six points between the teams with the final whistle approaching, Abbeydorney goaled after
a lapse in concentration in the Kilmoyley defence. Abbeydorney were then awarded a
21 with time almost up, but it was blocked and the following rebound which fell to an
Abbeydorney player in front of goal was blocked by Ian Brick. Kilmoyley just about
deserved to win this game and it maintained their unbeaten run in the competition.
Sunday 25th May 2003 Round 3 Credit Union County League (Ardfert)
Kilmoyley
3-15 Ardfert 2-13
Kilmoyley made it three in a row
when they defeated Ardfert on Sunday afternoon. Veteran Tom Godley started at fullback and
teenager Sean Young at corner forward in a team that showed four changes from the North
Kerry final the previous Friday night. Padraig O'Sullivan missed out after breaking having
a bone in his hand broken the previous Friday against Abbeydorney, and he is now likely to
be out for up to six weeks. Despite being played in almost ideal conditions the standard
of hurling in the first fifteen minutes was very poor with both sides showing a lack of
composure on the ball and poor striking. Kilmoyley played with what slight breeze there
was and Darren Young showing good opportunism, opened the scoring with a goal inside two
minutes. Ardfert then opened their scoring with a point before Kilmoyley added a few more
including one from corner back Ian Brick. Kilmoyley were lucky not to concede a couple of
goals after a number of defensive errors, but Ardfert couldn't capitalise. Kilmoyley's
hurling did improve in the second quarter with the Kilmoyley forwards creating numerous
scoring chances including a second goal scored by Micheal Regan. Halftime score Kilmoyley
2-9 Ardfert 0-3.
Ardfert opened the scoring in the
second half with a long range free from Eamon Corridon, but Kilmoyley quickly replied with
another and scored a goal through Micheal Regan which effectively finished off the
match as a contest. At this stage Kilmoyley did slacken and Ardfert came more into the
game mainly through the number of frees they were awarded, most of which were pointed by
Eamon Corridon. Ardfert scored a goal after the Kilmoyley defence failed to clear their
lines and Joe Walsh had to make a couple of saves to maintain Kilmoyley's lead. Ardfert
added a second goal when ref Gerard Neenan awarded a controversial penalty. But Kilmoyley
added a few more points through Richard Gentleman, Ollie Diggins and Darren Young and in
the end Killmoyley ran out winners by five points. They will be pleased to have clocked up
such a high score and the efforts of Friday night certainly had a bearing on proceedings.
Sunday 6th April 2003 Round
2 Credit Union County League (Lerrig)
Kilmoyley
2-13 Ballyheigue 1-8
Kilmoyley continued on their
winning ways with this victory over neighbours Ballyheigue at sundrenched Lerrig before a
large attendance. The start of the game was delayed because of the car rally that took
place around the local roads, and the game itelf was slow to get going with neither team
making any real headway.
Kilmoyley faced a breeze from the
Lerrig end in the first half and found themselves four points to two down after ten
minutes. But a goal from an overhead flick by Billy Brick had Kilmoyley in front and they
were not to be led again. Another Kilmoyley goal before halftime from Colin Harris gave
them a significant lead with the breeze to come. Brendan Harris and Darren Young were
playing well for Kilmoyley who stretched their lead to 2-10 to 0-7 with fifteen minutes to
go. A number of substitutes were made for Kilmoyley and this seemed to unsettle matters as
Ballyheigue were awarded a penalty by ref John Hennessy. "Boxer's" shot
was excellently saved, but they did score a consolation goal a few minutes later. An
excellent long range point from Maurice Murnane left the final score 2-13 to 1-8. In the
end Kilmoyley never looked in danger of being beaten. Two wins from two and top of the
table.

Round 1 Credit Union County League (Lerrig)
Kilmoyley
0-19 Causeway 4-4
Kilmoyley started off its 2003
season with a hard fought victory over neighbours Causeway in this first round County
league match played at Lerrig in excellent conditions. A large crowd turned out to see an
entertaining match in which the lead switched hands on a number of occasions in the final
minutes.
Kilmoyley started slowly and
found themselves 1-1 to 0-1 in arrears after a couple of minutes with JM Dooley getting
the Causeway goal. A number of over exhuberant challenges kept ref John Hennessy busy.
Dooley goaled again for Causeway, but a good ten minute spell by Kilmoyley before half
time saw them score three unanswered points and reduce the deficit.
Playing with a slight breeze in
the second half Kilmoyley continued to pile on the pressure with Shane Brick scoring some
good frees and Colin Harris also making a notable contribution on the wing. However as
Kilmoyley edged five points ahead with ten minutes to go a third goal by Dooley and a
further goal for Causeway had them leading by one point. Darren Young had a quick reply at
the other end to equalise before Causeway edged ahead again with a free. But Kilmoyley
finished the stronger with four unanswered points to finish three points to the good.
Right at the end, Shane Harty for Causeway was red carded.
So in the end Kilmoyley will be
relieved to have come away with the points and will be pleased at having scored nineteen
points. However conceding four goals will also be a worry even if JM Dooley is one of the
best in the business. Ballyheigue next week .
