Sunday 10th September 2006 2006 County Intermediate hurling Final

Kilmoyley 1-6 Kilgarvan 1-16

Defeat for Intermediates

Kilmoyley's Intermediates lost their second final of the year to Kilgarvan having already lost out in the county league final. There can be no complaints either from the Kilmoyley players as Kilgarvan were much the better team right from the first whistle. In fact the score was 1-3 to no score after ten minutes in favour of the 'Roughty boys' whose passing, first touch and movement around the field left the Kilmoyley players wondering what had hit them. It took a full 13 minutes for Kilmoyley to register their first score which was a point from Andy McCarthy. At this stage the Kilmoyley defence was under immense pressure but David Fitzell and Gavin O'Connor were coping well and clearing their lines. But Kilgarvan added another another three points, two from frees with the sweet striking Mike Foley unerring from placed balls. With the half coming to a close and being eight points in arrears, Kilmoyley introduced two subs and they certainly improved their play somewhat and were rewarded with two more points from Andy McCarthy, the second a nice score from play. James Godley and Seanie Murnane were hurling well in defence at this stage but could do little to prevent another pointed Kilgarvan free to finish the half 1-7 to 0-4.

Kilmoyley needed a good start to the second half, but found it difficult to breakdown a tough Kilgarvan rearguard. Graham O'Connor was introduced after five minutes and had an immediate when he collected a long delivery and slotted the ball over the bar. But this was as close as Kilmoyley got as Kilgarvan's strength and pace began to tell. They scored four unanswered points, one a fine effort from midfield. With a quarter of the game remaining, Kilmoyley were given a lifeline when Andy McCarthy scored an excellent individual goal after collecting a good pass from Pat Deenihan. But Kilgarvan replied immediately with two points and when Kilmoyley missed two great goal chances in succession the writing was on the wall. In fairness to the Kilmoyley players they kept trying to the bitter end, but to no avail as Kilgarvan deservedly took the title, following defeats in the previous two finals.
