Round 3 2006 North Kerry League

Kilmoyley 1-14 Abbeydorney 0-5 in Abbeydorney Thu 13th April 2006

Kilmoyley qualified for the semi-finals of the 2006 North Kerry League with a comprehensive victory over neighbours Abbeydorney. But the scoreline does not reflect the difficulties Kilmoyley had in overcoming the Abbeydorney challenge, despite the fact that they had a numerical advantage for at least half of the game :- Abbeydorney started the game and played with only 14 players for the first ten minutes. Had 15 players for another ten minutes before losing a player through injury before halftime. Started the second half again with 15 players but were reduced to 14 again for the final quarter following a dismissal. Kilmoyley were neither at full strength for the game but did have a number of subs ready for action. Abbeydorney started better, showing more determination for loose ball, although Kilmoyley did try to play a passing game, the wet conditions called for more direct play. The Kilmoyley forwards were also guilty of some easy misses, while Abbeydorney made the most of their chances and led at half time by 4 points to three.
Following a good half time talk, the Kilmoyley boys upped the tempo of the game after the restart, with Tom Murnane in particular taking his chances well. It was a foul on Murnane who was through on goal that led to the Abbeydorney player's dismissal. Kilmoyley immediately piled on the pressure and with the extra man in the half backline there was a plentiful supply of ball to the forwards who, despite a tiring Abbeydorney defence continued to shoot many wides. In the end, Kilmoyley ran out easy winners but it could have been very different. Both teams still qualify for the semi-finals with Kilmoyley topping the group, and now go on to play Ballyduff.

Round 2 2006 North Kerry League

Kilmoyley 5-11 St. Brendans 1-7 Lerrig Monday 10th April 2006

Kilmoyley put themselves back in contention for a semi-final spot with this comprehensive victory over St. Brendans at Lerrig on Monday evening. St. Brendans' players and supporters travelled in large numbers for this encounter, perhaps hoping for a similar display from Kilmoyley as they had against Crotta the previous week. Kilmoyley on the other hand were missing a number of players and started with players in a few new positions. James Godley played well on his competitive debut at corner back, while Padraig O'Sullivan and Joe Murnane also performed admirable in their new roles at wing back and full forward.
Kimoyley faced the breeze in the first half and it was evident from early on that the performance from the previous week was not going to be repeated, as Kilmoyley played with more determination and passion. Pat Flaherty was well on top and scored a good point from play, while Tom Murnane did well with his free taking duties. St. Brendans had a goal disallowed and a Maurice Murnane shot was saved on the line but Sean Maunsell batted the rebound to the net. And for good measure he added a second before the break to leave Kilmoyley ahead by 2-3 to 0-6.
It was more of the same in the second half from Kilmoyley and all players stuck to their task admirably, especially so from Padraig O'Sullivan who snuffed out the threat of John Egan. In the end Kilmoyley ran out comfortable winners and introduced newcomer Noel and oldtimer Pat Deenihan as subs.

Round 1 2006 North Kerry League

Kilmoyley 0-15    Crotta 2-11 Lerrig Monday 10th April 2006

The first round of the 2006 NK League was transferred to Lerrig on Monday evening due to an unplayable pitch at Dromakee following a lot of rain. Both sides had a full compliment of players but due to the sticky underfoot conditions free-flowing play proved to be difficult. As is now the norm with these early season games, the throw in was delayed by almost thirty minutes, resulting with the game ending in poor light.

Kilmoyley started the game brightly and had a couple of points on the board from Shane Brick frees. Crotta had a pointed free immediately after and then struck for a goal after keeper Brendan Harris attempted to prevent a point. The Kilmoyley full forward line meanwhile were getting little change from the visitor's defence and a number of goal chances were missed. Pat Flaherty and Tom Murnane scored good points from play to level matters but Crotta finished the half stronger and added two more pointed frees to go in at the break two points to the good.

Kilmoyley introduced Colin Harris and Micheal Regan to shake things up, and initially this worked as the sides were level within a couple of minutes of the restart, following two pointed frees. Match proceedings temporarily came to a halt following some dangerous pulling by a Crotta player. Thankfully, there were no serious injuries but the referee failed to take action on the matter. This spurred Kilmoyley on and they pushed into a four point lead with ten minutes remaining. But Crotta rallied again and converted a dubious penalty, although it should have been saved. Crotta finished with three more pointed frees, while Kilmoyley continued to miss goal chances at the other end. Overall, Crotta deserved their win and converted the majority of their opportunities. Kilmoyley will be somewhat disappointed to have lost their opening game of the year, but will hope that there is plenty of improvement to come.
