MUNSTER
CLUB HEARTBREAK
Munster Club
championship Quarter-Final 2002
Kilmoyley 1-12
Blackrock 2-13
For the second successive year
Kilmoyley gave Cork champions Blackrock the fright of their lives in the quarter final of
the Munster club hurling championship played at Pairc Ui Caoimh on Saturday 9th November.
Despite the loss, all Kilmoyley people travelled home with their heads held high,
following a terrific performance from their team.
A crowd of over three hundred
people made the long trip from the parish to witness a fantastic game of hurling played in
good conditions for hurling. Kilmoyley went into the game with a number of injury worries
and in the end this probably cost them the game, as well as the fact that they relied too
heavily on Shane Brick to get their scores.
Kilmoyley found themselves a goal
down after thirty seconds and they conceded four more points by the seventh minute.
We feared the worst at this stage, but a determined fight-back saw Kilmoyley trailing at
half time by only three points thanks mainly to the great work of Padraig Regan, Liam
Walsh and Shane Brick who had a goal disallowed following a foul on Maurice Murnane. An
indication of the play was that the Blackrock 'keeper was the busiest player on the field.
Ian Brick left the field of play
injured after two minutes of the re-start, and Sean Griffin came on at corner back.
Blackrock added another 1-3 without reply and the game looked lost at this stage. But
Kilmoyley's determination over the next twenty minutes saw them narrow the gap to two
points thanks mainly to Shane Brick whose final score was a goal from a '21. The Blackrock
selectors paced the sideline nervously at this stage as the game seemed to have swung
against them. But Kilmoyley could not score in the last five minutes and Blackrock added
two further points to leave the final margin at four points.
Shane Brick deservedly received
the Man of the Match award for a contribution of 1-10, but the disappointment for
Kilmoyley was all too evident as this was a game that Kilmoyley dominated for long periods
and a number of goal chances went a begging in the first half. Still, everyone involved
can be proud of the performance, and it is certainly a great platform to build on.
