MUNSTER
QF LEAGUE VICTORY
Munster Club
League Quarter-Final 2002
Kilmoyley 1-15
Castlelyons 1-9
The Seniors defeated Cork Senior
club Castlelyons by six points in this entertaining game played at Lerrig on Saturday 14th
September. Following very heavy rainfall over the previous number of nights, the field
became quite wet and conditions underfoot were not conducive to good hurling. But as the
scoreline suggests Kilmoyley played exceptionally well even if Castlelyons did look as if
they were lacking match practice.
Kilmoyley started brightly and in
the first half they had notable contributions from Liam Walsh who was marking Cork star
Timmy McCarthy, Darren Young and Ollie Diggin. Apparently the Castlelyons full-forward
found it very hard to believe that Ollie was fighting for his place on the championship
team having scored seven points from play. Castlelyons came more into the game in the
second half and scored a fortuitous early goal to edge closer to Kilmoyley. But the home
side, in front of a decent crowd rallied again, and in the end held out for the victory.
Overall, the game proved to be a
very worthwhile excercise and Kilmoyley now go on to meet Glen Rovers of Cork in the
semi-final. More importantly, Kilmoyley did not suffer any additional injuries although it
was noticeable that both Padraig Regan and Shane Brick were not 100% fit.
