2004 - The Hurling Year So Far by Tomás Mulcahy 9/9/04
(writes exclusively for Hogan Stand)

Backdoor or no backdoor, the quality of hurling in 2004 has been phenomenal. All teams (except the provincial champions) have had a second chance. You would have said the stakes were not as high in the earlier   rounds but the most amazing feature to me has been the desire shown by each county to win their provincial crowns. There is still great pride in winning a Munster, Leinster or Ulster medal, even though the same cannot be said about the Connacht as Galway have it all too easy there.

This is not their fault, however, and something is being done to change things. Their plight had to have a big impact on their performance in the
championship against Kilkenny and certainly sent out a clear reminder of the difference between league and championship. The year has produced
end-to-end, high-scoring matches, with a constant feature that the game is getting faster and faster all the time. Teams are now better prepared than
they have ever been before, with a huge emphasis on the physical side but more importantly for me, there is now a stronger emphasis and time allocated to the very basics and skills of the game of hurling. We are now beginning to see a lot more ball being hit on the ground and the simple things of the game are been executed so well, like hooking and blocking - not the prettiest things to watch at times but the most important in team sport - work rate.

I remember training a good few years ago when we were doing a lot of physical work - laps of the field and running up hills. When a certain player could not handle the hills any more and gave up the hunt only to get a mouthful from the coach but, quick as a flash, he returned with an answer
"sure there are no hills in Croke Park". And how right he was! I am glad to see the skill level is now a priority with the majority of coaches and
mentors today. Huge emphasis has been placed on ball work. That's what you play with! Isn't it? Small ball. Why do I say this? Two games especially stand out so far. Being a Corkman, and of course I am biased, but remember the Munster final in Thurles - what an advertisement for the game of hurling! Full of colour, passion and, above all, hurling of the highest quality - the best game by far for me in years and remember we lost. But not far behind this was the quality on view in the Kilkenny and Wexford Leinster championship match - both games decided by a point. Why were they so good? High scoring with plenty of goals - you cannot beat a game of hurling with goals being scored at both ends. Both went right down to the wire and with time almost up the leaders were pipped at the posts by the opposition - a goal for Wexford and a point for Waterford.

Great individual performances from Dan Shanahan and when the need was at its greatest master-craftsman Paul Flynn produced the goods when almost everyone had believed that time and top class hurling was now passing him by. That was on the Waterford side but Cork also had some great performers in Sean Og O hAilpin and Ben O'Connor. In the other match, you have to mention the performance of the two Jacobs and Adrian Fenlon in midfield for Wexford and, on the Kilkenny side, Henry Shefflin and JJ Delaney were to the forefront as they always are. Are tactics now becoming a bigger part of hurling than ever before? It is fair to say that most managers are now studying the strength and weakness of their opponents a lot more and are developing game plans to counteract teams' individual strong points and expose their weaknesses. There is now a lot more thought been put into games. Let's look at a few examples already this year: Wexford V Kilkenny Kilkenny's strongest line is their half back line, with the catching of the ball from the air and stopping the supply to the inside forwards their forte.

Wexford had a plan - drop the ball short to midfield from puck-outs - out to the wings - bring young Quigley from centre forward to midfield to win possession - then put the ball into space for the two Jacobs to run onto. Take the Kilkenny half backs out of the equation and you have a real chance
- easier said than done? Did it work? It worked a treat and was very effective - who won the match? Waterford's games against Tipperary and Cork
The use of Dan Shanahan has been the key to Waterford's performances this year. Why? The man has being scoring goals at a fantastic rate. How come? By using his height in around the square to great effect and causing nightmares for defenders. Once his half back line or midfielders are in possession, Dan is out of the traps to position himself at the edge of the square, 6ft 5, eyes of blue, big Dan Shanahan is looking down on you! Is it effective? Look at his goal count for a half forward!

Clare v Kilkenny - Alan Markham By far the most effective hurling move and game plan orchestrated in years. It caught Kilkenny totally by surprise when Clare played their half forward Alan Markham as an extra defender behind  their half back line. The move had two advantages. Firstly, it denied the Kilkenny forwards the space to move on to breaking ball and it also reduced the scoring opportunities. Secondly, it strengthened the Clare half back line and supported and helped Seanie McMahon no end. Did it work ? Six points to five at half time tells its own story. The disadvantage to Clare was that it left only five forwards and significantly reduced their scoring threat. Only when Tommy Walsh went off did the space open up for Clare. Kilkenny V Waterford All-Ireland semi-final Kilkenny's placing of Henry Shefflin at corner forward and John Hoyne at centre forward worked a treat as Hoyne kept Ken McGrath busy all afternoon and Eddie Brennan played out from goal, which left a lot of space for Shefflin inside - End result: Henry scores two goals in that first half period - the first was a brilliant individual effort, the second was excellent reading of the dropping ball and
being in the right place at the right time - no better man in that situation.

My contenders for Hurler of the Year so far.

My No 1 candidate has to be JJ Delaney from Kilkenny and what a year he is having! A couple of Man of the Match performances guarantee him an All Star but I would think he has just one more performance to give to automatically get the Hurler of the Year accolade. He is superb under the dropping ball and from puck-outs, this player has everything in his game - including work rate when he loses possession (how many time have we seen him make vital interceptions at vital stages in games?). His ability to catch the ball out of the air is another key feature of his game.

Goalkeeper of the year so far I have to include three goalkeepers here - Brendan Cummins, James McGarry, and Damian Fitzhenry of Wexford. Very close to call - whoever wins the All -Ireland here will have a big impact on the final decision.

KILMOYLEY HURLING NEWS

Charity Football game 27th Dec '04 Over thirty players participated in the charity football game at the sportsfield on St. Stephens Day and helped to raise €432 for Our Ladys hospital for sick children in Crumlin. Weather conditions were cold but dry as the eager bodies took to the field. Great credit is due in particular to John Meyler who travelled from Cork for the event. Proceedings were handled admirably by referree Sean Murnane, even if there were a few controversial scores awarded. Overall, it was a very entertaining game, and apparently Man of the Match Brendan O'Neill, who was playing in his first game in fourteen years is expecting a call shortly from Kerry Manager Jack O'Connor!

Wedding Results ! 20th Dec'04 Congratulations to Kilmoyley's James McCarthy and Marie Bowler of Tralee who got married last Saturday in Kilmoyley. James was the victorious captain that led the Kilmoyley Seniors to their first of four championship wins in 2002, and has continued to play with distinction for both club and county. The hurling club wishes them the very best in the years ahead.

Charity Football Game! 20th Dec'04 A Charity Football game is being held at Páirc Naomh Eirc Lerrig on Stephens Day at 1.30. It's the second year that this event is being held. Last year over €600 was collected for Our Ladys hospital for sick children in Crumlin. Anybody and everybody who is feeling energetic and enthusiastic after Christmas day is very welcome to join in the fun and frolics.

InterCounty GAA rule changes 15th Dec'04 A number of rule changes have been introduced for the forthcoming NHL and NFL. Some of the changes are common to both codes, but all the rules are intended to speed up play, reward more skillful play or reduce synical play. Rule Summary :-
Hurling & Football: 1. A ten minute sin-bin is being introduced for a yellow card and other specific fouls.
2. Linesmen are to be awarded more power in dealing with play
3. Injured players who receive attention must now be removed immediately from the field of play, and can only be re-introduced in a "substitute zone".
Hurling only :- Two points will now be awarded for a point scored from a sideline cut.
Football only :- 1. Players are now permitted to pick the ball off the ground or scoop it to a teammate.
2. Goalkeepers to use a plastic "tee" for kickouts only.

It is possible that these rule changes could be introduced as soon as the 2005 championships depending on how the National League trial period goes. But they certainly should make for more free flowing games.

Christmas hurling club Draw Results 14th Dec'04 The hurling club would like to thank all those who generously contributed to the Christmas draw. Once again, people were very willing to dig deep to help out the club financially. Winners :

€250 - Una O'Driscoll Ardfert, Turkey and Ham - Patrick Flaherty, Brandy - John Meyler, Brandy - Emma Harty Causeway, Christmas Cake - John Joe Curtin Springmount Scartaglin, Whiskey - Eily May Gentleman.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond our control, John Meyler will be unable to collect his prize as it has already been "taken care of".

Second Double for Kilmoyley Senior 13th Dec'04 Once again hurling in the county hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons when a mass brawl broke out at the end of the County League final. It is unfortunate that Kilmoyley have to be associated once again with such disgusting behaviour, but it seems that everyone is out to stop the club from winning anything, and they are taking any action to do so. Thankfully there were no injuries to any of the Kilmoyley players. The game itself was over two minutes into the second half when Kilmoyley scored two early goals to lead 5-6 to 2-3. There were a number of dangerous tackles that went unpunished at various stages, but in the end Causeway were reduced to 14 players. In the end, Kilmoyley scored an amazing 9 goals to win 9-13 to 4-5.

It is very likely that there will be no action taken by the County Board as a result of yesterday's events. But Kilmoyley may have to take a tougher stand in the future against this kind of abuse. For a club that is doing its best to bring hurling in the county to a higher level it is certainly no way to be treated. No wonder Kerry hurling is in the state that it is ! (Read The Kerryman's Report)

On a lighter note, Kilmoyley unveiled a new set of jerseys for the game with kilmoyleygaa.com advertised on the shoulder at the back. Well done to Ned and Agnes. There are more goodies on the way shortly for the players.

Senior County League Final 10th Dec'04 Following Ballyduff's failure to field a team last Saturday in the semi-final, Causeway have qualified to play Kilmoyley in the final this Sunday at 2pm at Ballyheigue. It is of course a repeat of the county championship final and Kilmoyley will be hoping to end the "domestic" season on a high note.

Kerry GAA Convention 8th Dec'04 At last night's Kerry's GAA convention Gerald Whyte of Causeway was elected Vice Chairman of the County Board. Traditionally, the Vice Chairman has been the person responsible for hurling within the county. Members also voted in favour of allowing Croke Park to open its doors to other events, a motion that was heavily defeated at the Limerick County Board convention last night also.

Local GAA Snippets 7th Dec'04 At Kerry's GAA convention which takes place tonight, a new Vice Chairman of the County Board will be elected due to the retirement of Jerome Conway. Gerald Whyte of Causeway and Derry Murphy of Dingle are contendors for the position. In his report, Secretary Eamon O'Sullivan will mention the disappointing year for the hurlers in contrast to the outstanding success of the footballers in winning two National titles. He will also be asking for a commitment from all players in the preparation of next year's campaign that was not there this year. He will also thank The Kerryman's John Barry for his commitment to the coverage of GAA within the county as he is due to retire next May.

Downloading GAA games to phones 7th Dec'04 New phone technology may allow Vodafone customers to download highlights of GAA games. With the introduction of 3G technology to Ireland next year, Vodafone are considering extending their Vodafone Live! service to GAA games. The service already allows Irish customers to access video streaming from the Premiership, along with downloading, mobile TV, video calling and 3D games.

Costelloe lashes GAA over state of hurling 7th Dec'04 Dublin County Secretary, John Costello has criticised those in power within the GAA for allowing the game of hurling to diminish to such a fragile level that only twelve teams are now allowed compete for our main National prize. He goes as far as saying that the powers that be within the GAA have failed dismally in their duty to promote and preserve the greatest field game in the world.

This is certainly evident Kerry at present, where the standard of hurling has become so poor that despite Kilmoyley's best efforts in the Munster club championship over the last few years, we seem to be as far away as ever from winning our first game at that level in over thirty years. Kerry is one of, if not the last county to put a management team in place for its senior team that was plucked from this year's All Ireland hurling qualifiers due to lack of interest. In a county where gaelic football is the main religion, it's fine to say that hurling is growing in non-traditional areas such as Dingle and Duagh, but that interest will not be maintained if young players have no senior team to emulate. In Kilmoyley, we could still be wondering how to win a County Senior title were it not for the huge efforts of our club officers and John Meyler. At the end of the day, hurling will only be preserved with substantial financial investment from Croke Park to develop proper coaching methods and facilities in the weaker areas such as Kerry.

Shane Brick on Munster hurling panel 1st Dec'04 For the second year in a row the Munster Railway Cup team were comprehensively beaten by Connaught 1-15 to 0-9, this year at Pearse Stadium Galway. While Shane was not introduced as a sub for the final, he was in esteemed company with the likes of Colin Lynch, John Gardiner and Toomevara's Paddy O'Brien being introduced as subs. Interestingly, Connaught introduced Mayo teenager Keith Higgins as substitute in the final minutes to win a provincial medal that has eluded his footballing couterparts for the past 35 years.

Upcoming Games 2nd Dec'04 Kilmoyley are due to play Cork club champions Na Piarsaigh on Saturday week 11th December in Killarney in the semi final of the Munster League, but this has yet to be confirmed. Meanwhile, this weekend sees the meeting of Causeway and Ballyduff in the semi-final of the County League. Kilmoyley await the winners.

Kilmoyley hurler to play in Paris
2nd Dec'04
This weekend Mary Brick of Ballymacandrew travels with the Brussels mixed hurling team to Paris to take on the locals in a European friendly. They are looking for an Irish team to travel over in the New Year, where players would be accommodated by members of the team. If interested in travelling, you can contact Mary at mbrick@jppbe.JNJ.com

No luck for Intermediates
29th Nov '04
Kilmoyley's Intermediates were beaten by Dr. Crokes in the final of the Division 2 County League after extra time. There was only one goal in it at the end with the Killarney side emerging victorious by 2-13 to 1-13. (Match Report later)

6000 visitors for Web site
26th Nov '04
In less than two years the Kilmoyleygaa.com website has reached 6000 hits which is fantastic. Hopefully the website (and the hurling club) will continue to improve and we will continue to have your support. Thanks to everyone !

Upcoming Club games 25th Nov '04 Activities have been relatively quiet over the recent weeks, but this weekend the Intermediates eventually get to play the final of the division 2 County league final. The opposition is Dr. Crokes and the game takes place on Sunday at 12 noon in Ballyheigue. Kilmoyley will be hoping to reverse their loss to the same side that beat them in the County championship semifinal.
The Seniors have no dates as yet for their County league final or Munster League game. Ballyduff are still involved in NK football championship which has delayed their playoff with Causeway in the hurling. While in Cork, Na Piarsaigh play in the County U21 championship this weekend, and must still play Mount Sion in the Munster club QF. Incidentally, in the first semifinal of the Munster League, St Finbarrs and Ballingarry of Tipp played out an ill-tempered draw last weekend with five red cards being issued. The replay is also unlikely to be played in the coming weeks.
It also looks like our minors and U21s are finished for the year, not having played a game in a North Kerry competition for the second year in a row!

2004 Football All Stars
25th Nov '04
Congratulations to Lixnaw's Paul Galvin who was one of six Kerry footballers to receive a Vodafone AllStar. In winning his first award, Galvin is also recognised as being the 1000th recipient of an AllStar award since the scheme's inception in 1971. It has been a fantastic year for Galvin who missed out on the 2003 County hurling final due to illness. But he has bounced back in amazing fashion and has capped his first full year with the ultimate individual prize.
The other Kerry players to receive AllStars were Diarmuid Murphy goals (1st award),Tom O'Sullivan rcb (1st), Michael McCarthy lcb (2nd), Tomas Ó Sé rhb (1st), Colm Cooper rcf (2nd).

No Management for Dublin Footballers
23rd Nov '04
You would never have thought that the Dublin footballers and the Kerry hurlers had anything in common. But both squads currently find themselves without a management team, despite the fact that both previous managers left during the summer ! But the Dublin footballers have taken it upon themselves to resume training and have organised gym sessions with the help of DCU training expert Dr Niall Moyna.

Munster club hurling final
22nd Nov '04
Toomevara captured the 2004 Munster club championship title in dramatic fashion at Thurles yesterday. Trailing by seven points midway through the second half, the Tipp champions rallied to score 1-5 without reply with the goal being scored from a mistake by the Mount Sion keeper. Even then Ken McGrath had a chance to level the match with the last puck of the game, but his free drifted wide of the upright and Toomevara claimed the victory by 1-14 to 1-13.

Draw for 2004 All-Ireland Championship Tier II 17th Nov '04 Details have been released from Croke Park of the format of games to be played in the 2005 championship with Kerry in group 2 with the usual suspects like Mayo, Carlow, Kildare and Wicklow (at least there's no trip to Down or Antrim). Round one takes place on June 4th and the top two teams from each group will meet in the semi-finals with the winners playing the final as a curtain raiser to a game in the concluding stages of the Tier 1 championship. It's a far cry from meeting Limerick in Tralee but the only way is up !!!

In the League, Kerry begins its campaign away to Carlow on 20th February. The will also face Sligo(h), Meath(a), Wicklow(h) and London (h). The second phase of the League will then commence on April 10th with games played on three consecutive weekends. The final is due to be played on the May holiday weekend. (Details here)

Defeat for Intermediates
13th Nov '04
The Intermediate team were beaten by St. Brendans in the North Kerry championship at Ardfert today. Despite missing a number of the players that played in the County semi-final, Kilmoyley were very much in the game up to the final whistle when St. Brendan's scored a goal with virtually the last puck of the game on a scoreline of 1-11 to 1-9. It was cruel luck on the fifteen who lined out, but there is still the county league to be won before the year finishes.

Sports award for hurling club
11th Nov '04
Kilmoyley hurling club was awarded the Sports Star of the month award for October for its achievement in winning four County titles in a row. The awards which are jointly sponsored by The Kerryman, the Gleneagle and KerryGroup were presented at a function at the Gleneagle last night.

Weekend Results 8th Nov '04 At Lerrig on Sunday the Abbeydorney lady footballers defeated Gráinne Mhaols of Galway in the semi-final of the All-Ireland club championship by 3-9 to 4-3. Having been down by seven points heading into the final quarter, a late flurry of scores saw the local ladies advance to the final. Congratulations to Catherine Collins of Banemore who played at half back for Abbeydorney. (There was plenty of local male support at the game)

In the semi-finals of the Munster club championship, Toomevara overcame a weakened Na Piarsaigh outfit by two goals while Mount Sion eased past Kilmaley comfortably to set up a Tipp/Waterford club final.

Congratulations to Maurice Fitzgerald of St. Mary's who won his first County football championship medal at the weekend when South Kerry defeated Laune Rangers at Fitzgerald Stadium. Will he do the "Christy Walsh" on it and go on to win a few more after waiting so long for his first.

It is strongly rumoured that Vice chairman of the Kerry county board, Jerome Conway will not be seeking re election to that position at the forthcoming county convention. Jerome of course is the man responsible for hurling in the county. With Kerry partcicipating in the new championship format in 2005, it is important for the County Board, and the Vice Chairman to get their selection of new manager right. Who do you think should be manager? Vote in the poll !!

Defeat for U21s in County Final 6th Nov '04 There was no joy today for Kilmoyley's U21s who were beaten by a much better Lixnaw team at Austin Stack park today by 2-13 to 1-6. (Match Report)

U21s play in County Final
5th Nov '04
Folllowing their good victory over Ballyduff in the semi-final two weeks ago, Kilmoyley's U21s find themselves in the County championship final where they face Lixnaw. While Kilmoyley go into the game as underdogs, Lixnaw will be the team under pressure to win, in a final that sees the same two teams as in the County minor final.

But with experienced players such as Brendan Harris, Eoin Sheehy, Darren Young, Tom Murnane, Padraig O'Sullivan and Patrick Flaherty Kilmoyley will be hoping to upset the odds. And for Lixnaw, the performances of players like John Griffin and Micheal Conway will have a big influence on the outcome.Throw in for the game is at 3pm at Austin Stacks park, Tralee this Saturday.Best of luck lads.

Mixed weekend for hurlers 31st Oct '04 Kilmoyley's hurlers had varying fortunes on Sunday last with the U15s winning the final against St. Brendans, while the Intermediates surrendered their title crown when they went down tamely in the County championship semi-final to Dr. Crokes at Caherslee.

The U15s on the other hand went into the final up against the odds as they had been beaten by the same opposition earlier in the competition. But they managed to overturn the odds and emerged victorious at Lerrig.

Meanwhile, it looks as if the Seniors could go straight into the Munster League final. They were due to meet the winners of the last quarter-final between Na Piarsaigh of Cork and Mont Sion, but following Na Piarsaigh's 17 points to 10 victory over Cloyne in the Cork Senior final last Sunday and both teams continued involvement in the Munster club championship, the fixture may not now be fulfilled.

Kilmoyley's All-Ireland winners
27th Oct '04
Kerry won its first All-Ireland Master's Shield hurling final on Monday when they beat Dublin at The Ragg in Tipperary by 2-11 to 0-7. Kilmoyley men led the way for Kerry with John Brendan Griffin captaining the side and excelling at wing back, Christy Walsh shining at centre-forward scoring nine points from play, Fintan Ryan "catching the eye" at corner forward and Joe Walsh coming on as substitute.
The result was rarely in doubt, and the boys enjoyed a night of celebration at Tóchar Bán. Well done lads !!

Weekend Results in Munster 26th Oct '04 In Clare, Kilmaley won their first County hurling championship since 1985 when they overcame St. Joseph's by 1-10 to 1-9. In the second quarter-final of the Munster club championship Mount Sion scored a late goal to beat Ahane of Limerick by 4-8 to 2-11. In Cork Watergrasshill beat Dromina to claim the Intermediate hurling championship. At Croke Park on Sunday Kilmoyley's Shane Brick was among Munster's substitutes in their impressive win over Leinster. The game itself was a curtain raiser to the International Rules game, and it saw Toomevara's Benny Dunne and Paddy O'Brien both introduced as subs.

U21s reach County Final 25th Oct '04 Kilmoyley's U-21s overcame a strong challenge from Ballyduff to reach the County final. A goal by Padraig O'Sullivan in the first half and two goals from Sean Maunsell in the final ten minutes sealed this one point victory. Despite having John Maunsell sent off also in the last ten minutes, Kilmoyley held on for the victory by 3-7 to 1-12 in an exciting and keenly contested game. The final is likely to be on the weekend of 6th Nov.(Match Report)

Seniors back on track with win over Midleton
23rd Oct '04
The Seniors had an impressive win over Cork side Midleton on Saturday to reach the semi-final of the Munster League for the third year in a row. Despite having to travel to Midleton, Kilmoyley started brightly and by half time led by 1-9 to 0-6. Midleton came back into the game early in the second half, but their total second half score of 1-5 came from placed balls. Corner forward Sean Maunsell pounced on a 'keeper error to score a goal  and the contest was over with ten minutes to go. The final score 2-15 to 1-11.
It showed great character of the team to bounce back from last weeks disappointing result to Toomevara, and the attitude shown by the players certainly bodes well for next year. (Match Report)

Munster disappointment for Kilmoyley 18th Oct '04
Tipperary champions Toomevara once again showed that the standard of hurling between the top counties and Kerry hasn't been bridged, with an overwhelming display at Lerrig in the Munster club quarter final. Despite Kilmoyley's optimism going into the game, Toomevara hit the ground running (as Kilmoyley had done last year) and Kilmoyley had no answer to their relentless pace and power. The game was effectively over at half time, after Kilmoyley had played with a stiff breeze but trailed by eleven points and had struggled all over the pitch.

Overall, Kilmoyley were disappointing and never raised their game at any stage to the standard necessary to compete at this level. There will be plenty of analysis of the performance around North Kerry over the coming days and weeks, but the game ultimately proved that if Kilmoyley are the best team in Kerry, the standard of club hurling must improve dramatically if anyone is to make the breakthrough. (Match Report)

Dooley strikes for Ireland 18th Oct '04 Congratulations to Causeway's John Mike Dooley who helped Ireland snatch a draw with Scotland in the hurling/shinty international in Ratoath. After being introduced as a sub, Dooley scored a point and two late goals to level the game after Ireland had been seven points down with seven mintes to go.

Seniors ready to face Toomevara at Lerrig 12th Oct '04 On Sunday afternoon the Kilmoyley Seniors will attempt a feat that has never been achieved by  Kerry club - to win a Munster club championship hurling tie. The game is live on Radio Kerry at 3pm.

Paddy Power have quoted Kilmoyley at 14/1 to win the game while Toomevara are at 100/1.The draw is 25/1.

No sign of Kilmoyley though !!!!
  (Match Preview)

Munster County hurling championships 8th Oct '04 Kilmoyley's opponents in the first round of the Munster club championship Toomevara of Tipperary, overcame outsiders Éire Óg by 4-12 to 1-12 yesterday. In Limerick, Ahane defeated outsiders Garryspillane thanks to a late free from Niall Moran. In Waterford, Mount Sion won their third title in a row by defeating Ballygunner, with eight goals being scored. Corks semi-finals saw two surprises with last years finalists Blackrock and All-Ireland champions Newtownshandrum defeated by Na Piarsaigh and Cloyne respectively. It is Cloyne's first appearance in a county final, and these are the two teams that Kilmoyley defeated to win last year's Munster League title. In Clare, Kilmaley and St. Joseph's are into the final after wins over Scariff and Clarecastle.

Website Update 8th Oct '04 Everybody is welcome to McElligott's bar in Ardfert tonight where the Neilus Flynn cup will go on its final public display before the team settles back into serious training for the game against Toomevara on the 23rd at Lerrig. It is interesting to note that Clifford'd Bookmakers in Tralee quote Kilmoyley at 66/1 to win the Munster club championship. Worth a flutter ???

Shane Brick awarded Man of the Match
4th Oct '04
At the AIB Man of the Match function held at the Ballyroe Heights hotel today Shane Brick was honoured a record third time. There were a number of contenders for the award but for scoring 2-6 and his general overall contribution to Kilmoyley's victory. A large crowd from both parishes of Kilmoyley and Causeway attended the dinner. While Kilmoyley have had large attendances for the four occasions, credit must be given to the Causeway players and supporters, as it is never easy to be in such good spirits following defeat. It was great to see Andy McCarthy at the dinner, following his concussion in yesterday's minor final.

Earlier in the day the team and a number of supporters travelled to Causeway Comprehensive school where they were greeted once again with a very warm welcome from students and staff. Maurice Fitzgerald congratulated Lixnaw on their minor victory and praised his own squad for their spirited performance.

Seniors defeat Causeway in County final
3rd Oct '04
Kilmoyley's Seniors emulated the feat ofthe Causeway team of '79 to '82 by winning four County championships in a row. The game was still up for grabs until 41 year old sub Christy Walsh turned the game in Kilmoyley's favour with a fantastic display for the final quarter. He was only on the field one minute when he slotted home from close range. In the end, Kilmoyley ran out convincing winniers by 3-15 to 2-9.

Unfortunately the minors were beaten by a much stronger Lixnaw team, but as they have done all year, they gave it their all and could not be faulted for their effort. (Match Report)

Kilmoyley's championship final's teams
2nd Oct '04
There are two changes to the team that defeated St. Brendans in the semi-final. In come Patrick Flaherty and Sean Maunsell to replace Joe Murnane and Ollie Diggin. There are also a few positional switches with Richard gentleman moving to midfield, Tom Murnane moving to left half forward and Micheal Regan at left corner forward. Kilmoyley's strength though is on the bench with formidable players such as Christy Walsh, Sean Griffin, Padraig O'Sullivan, Eoin Sheehy and the previously mentioned Joe Murnane and Ollie Diggin.

The minor team has not yet been announced as there are still a couple of injury worries to Gavin O'Connor and James Godley so it will probably be before throw in. It has been a fantastic achievement for the minors to get this far.

Whoever lines out they will once again represent the parish with pride and dignity, and wouldn't it be a huge achievement to bring back both the Neilus Flynn and Sean Lovett cups to Kilmoyley Sunday evening. It has been all of thirty years ago since Kilmoyley last achieved this.

Plan to rescue hurling 1st Oct '04 Sports Minister John O'Donoghue said yesterday he was discussing a plan with GAA President Sean Kelly to 'rescue' hurling.

County final build up 30th Sept '04 With only three days to go to the biggest day in the County's hurling calendar, championship fever is really building. The excitement is twice as great in Kilmoyley with the minors also taking centre stage. While supporters around the parish have been relatively slow in putting up the banners, bunting and flags, no doubt come Sunday morning the parish will be bathed in green and gold.

The Seniors have no new injury worries, with Colin Harris the only real casualty since the semi-final win over St. Brendans. The minors have a couple casualtys following their great win in the semi-final. Both Gavin O'Connor and James Godley are due to have x-rays today to determine the extent of their injuries, but both are very doubtful to start. Once again the minors will go into the final as underdogs, but it is a tag that has suited them to date in the competition.

There is no indication yet of the Seniors starting team and it probably will not be announced until Saturday. However training is going very well at present despite the wet conditions and it is a huge benefit to have such a strong panel of players. Interviews with personnel from both camps can be heard on Radio Kerry at 1.15 and 6.45 this week. Read The Kingdom Report and The Kerryman Report.

Munster club hurling championships 27th Sept '04 This weekend saw a number of County hurling championships reaching their concluding stages in Munster. In Cork, there were four mouth-watering ties but none really lived up to their promise. But there were easy wins for Cloyne and Na Piarsaigh while Newtownshandrum found the going a bit more difficult in overcoming John Meyler's CIT. Meanwhile, Blackrock and Glen Rovers must meet again after they finished all square.

In Tipperary, both semis were played at Semple Stadium and they saw Toomevara emerge victorious over Mullinahone by 2-19 to 2-14 while Éire Óg / Golden edged out Roscrea by 2-17 to 4-9.
It's a familiar story once again in Waterford where Ballygunner and Mount Sion enjoyed weekend wins to set up yet another "Derby" final.
In Limerick, Ahane and Garryspillane had already qualified for the county final.
In Clare, Wofe Tones and St Joseph's Doora Barefield could still not be separated after extra time in their quarterfinal clash and the game goes to a second replay

Sam comes home to Kerry 26th Sept '04 Kerry won its 33rd Senior All-Ireland title today by easily defeating Mayo at Croke Park on a scoreline of 1-20 to 2-9. A stunning first half display set the kingdom up for this victory, but Mayo never rose to the heights they reached in earlier rounds of the competition, even if they did lead after five minutes of the game. The Kerry team arrive in Tralee tomorrow evening at six o'clock by train where they will parade through the town and be presented to the crowd on a stage at the Ashe memorial Hall.

Minors cause a sensation
25th Sept '04
Congratulations to Maurice Fitzgerald and to the Kilmoyley minor team who caused the upset of the year to date when they defeated the hottest of favourites Ballyduff/Causeway in the semi-final of the county championship to set up a double county final with the seniors next Sunday. It is the first time since 1965 that both minor and senior teams have qualified for the championship finals in the same year.

Ballyduff won last year's minor  championship and this year were joined by Causeway. But they still weren't good enough to beat our lads who had only played Division 2 hurling the last two years winning both county League and championship. Not only that but they won comfortably and comprehensively on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-2. (Match Report soon)

Minors play Championship semi-final
25th Sept '04
After their great victory over St. Brendan's in the quarter-final, Kilmoyley's minors meet Ballyduff/Causeway in the semi-final today in Lixnaw at 3pm. While it is a huge task, a repeat of their qf performance would give them every chance, despite a number of injury worries. Good Luck Boys. Lixnaw and Ballyheigue play in the other semi.

All-Ireland Football final
24th Sept '04
Best of luck to Lixnaw's Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Paul Galvin who line out for Kerry in this weekend's Bank of Ireland Senior All-Ireland football final against Mayo.

Cork Senior hurling championship 24th Sept '04 If anybody wants to go mad this weekend on GAA you could do worse than spend Saturday and Sunday in Cork where all four quarter-finals of the hurling championship are being played, and all of which are mouth-watering ties.
On Saturday evening at Páirc Uí Chaoimh there is a double header commencing at 3pm. Champions of 2001 and 2002 Blackrock face Glen Rovers who overcame Imokilly last weekend, while St. Finbarr's and Cloyne clash at 4.20pm.

You can then travel to Fermoy where John Meyler sees his CIT outfit clash with All-Ireland club champions Newtownshandrum for the second time in the competition, having seen them off already in the first round. But CIT will be without a number of their players who are unavailable due to club commitments. Throw in for that game takes place at 2pm.

After watching Kerry win the All-Ireland Senior football final on TV you can go to see Na Piarsaigh and Sarsfields, the two teams that Kilmoyley played in the last two Munster League finals. They meet at Páirc Ui Rinn at 6.15. Both teams have been out of action for four months, and there are suggestions that Setanta ó hAilpín could make a surprise return for his former club. Otherwise they will largely field the team that were beaten in the 2003 Munster league final by Kilmoyley.
If you can take all that excitement, you can start preparing for the Kerry hurling final next weekend.

Munster Club draw 21st Sept '04 It has been announced that the winners of this years Kerry county hurling final will have a home tie against the Tipperary champions on Saturday 23rd Oct. Kilmoyley of course travelled to Thurles last year losing out to Toomevara. The Tipp semi-finals are due to be played this weekend Sunday 26th with Eire óg taking on Roscrea in the first semi and holders Toomevara facing Mullinahone. Both games are on in Semple Stadium.

Victory for Minors 19th Sept '04 Kilmoyley's minors upset the odds once again at under age level by beating a much fancied St. Brendan's team in the quarter-final of the minor championship by three points (Match Report)

Upcoming Games
17th Sept '04 Kilmoyley's minors take on Ballyheigue this evening in Ballyheigue in the semi-final of the North Kerry championship. This competition is being rushed through, as the final is due to be played on Sunday. There is no date yet fixed for the county minor championship or the Intermediate championship.

GOAL challenge 15th Sept '04 All Ireland Intercounty champions Cork played All-Ireland club champions Newtownshandrum at Páirc Ui Rinn last night in the annual GOAL challenge. Cork fielded thirteen of the team that started the final with John Browne and Cian O'Connor replacing Sean Óg Ó hAilpín and Wayne Sherlock. The game finished Newtown 16-3 Cork 14-3 !!!

Cork win Senior All-Ireland hurling title 12th Sept '04 Cork got revenge for last year's defeat at the hands of Kilkenny to beat the same opposition on a scoreline of 0-17 to 0-9 in a poor game. The game was played in damp conditions and it wad the Leesiders composure on the ball and their ability to make the most of their chances that gave them victory. Kerry of course met Cork in the first game of the championship at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and while Cork won comprehensively they improved their game immensely since then, with Kilkenny unable to cope with their running game.
It was nice to see Cork's Sean Óg Ó hAilpín and John Gardiner of Na Piarsaigh playing so well following their defeat to Kilmoyley in last year's Munster League final, and it was also satisfying to see Niall McCarthy of Cork being awarded Man of the Match as Kilmoyley's James McCarthy outhurled him in the championship opener.

No luck for Kerry's lady footballers
11th Sept '04
For the second year in a row, the Kerry Senior ladies failed in their bid to reach the All-Ireland final. Jackie Murnane of Kilmoyley lined out at corner back. Dublin scored a goal with two minutes remaining and with the sides deadlocked to advance for the saecond year.

Victory for U21s and U15s
11th Sept '04
Kilmoyley's under age teams had a double celebration today with victories over Causeway. The U21s quarter-final was played at Lerrig and in the breezy conditions they won by 2-9 to 1-7. (Match Report Later)

Justin McCarthy on Kilkenny
10th Sept '04 (From Irish Examiner)
It would be a “truly phenomenal sporting achievement” if Kilkenny win Sunday’s All-Ireland final and complete the three in-a-row, according to Cork legend and current Waterford manager Justin McCarthy.
“What this Kilkenny team have already achieved with back-to-back titles, one before that in 2000, and a couple of league titles thrown in for good measure, is both remarkable and monumental, particularly in the modern climate where the preparations and demands on players is absolutely colossal,” he said.
Asked why Kilkenny are so successful and so difficult to beat, particularly in All-Ireland finals, McCarthy maintained: “Kilkenny are the craftiest county playing hurling, They have the know-how, the tradition, the skill and the experience. And they have the perfect set-up".
Could the same be said about Kilmoyley ?

Jackie lines out for Kerry in All-Ireland semi 10th Sept '04 Jackie Murnane faces into her second All-Ireland semi-final in a row with the Kerry Lady footballers. Lining out at corner back, the 2003 Munster player of the year is hoping to avenge last year's defeat to the same opposition, Dublin. The game takes place in O'Moore Park, Portlaoise on Saturday at 1.30pm and it is being televised live on TG4 and RadioKerry. Best of luck!

Munter club championship draw
6th Sept '04
While the draw for the Munster club championship has not yet been made, the date for both quarter-finals has been fixed for the 24th October with the semi-finals fixed for a fortnight later on 7th November. Cork have yet to start their quarter-finals while most of the other counties have to finalise their   semi-finalists yet. (The Year to Date by Tomás Mulcahy)

Seniors defeat St. Brendan's in tough encounter
5th Sept '04
Kilmoyley are through to their fourth county final in a row following an unimpressive victory over parish neighbours St. Brendan's. In the final, Kilmoyley will meet Causeway who surprised Ballyheigue in the second semi-final played at Austin Stacks park before a large attendance. Causeway were already beaten by Crotta in the first round and advanced through the back door system. This will actually be the first County hurling final between Kilmoyley and Causeway, and Kilmoyley will of course be out to emulate the feat of the four in a row '79-'82 Causeway team and also to equal Ballyduff's record of 20 championship wins.

As I said, Kilmoyley will count themselves lucky to be playing in the final as it was St. Brendan's that played the better hurling for long periods of the game, and certainly had more appetite for victory. But in the end, it was a four point victory for Kilmoyley on a scoreline of 4-10 to 3-9.

One disappointing aspect of the game, and unfortunately it's one that we have become familiar with over the last few years was the jeering and gibing from the crowd when Shane Brick was taking Kilmoyley's frees. (God knows there were only a few of them). It is a sad reflection of Kerry hurling that this behaviour is tolerated and it is no wonder that Kerry hurling is as poor as it is. Fair enough, neutral and opposition supporters may want to see a different team winning the championship, but this is no way to show it and it was little wonder that the crowd was so quiet for the second game - they were burned out after the first ! (Match Report)

County League victory for U-16s 4th Sept '04 Congratulations to Kilmoyley's under 16 team who upset all the odds in defeating hot favourites St. Brendan's today. It was  a surprise win as Kilmoyley were well beaten by the same opposition earlier in the competition. Even the fact that Kilmoyley were reduced to 14 players ten minutes before halftime did not upset them and they cruised to a well deserved victory. (Match Report Later)

Injury worries for Seniors
1st Sept '04
Kilmoyley have a number of injury worries ahead of the weekend's clash with St. Brendan's. Colin Harris, Ian Brick and Micheal Regan are all carrying knocks from the weekends game against St. Finbarr's. It is hoped that all will be cleared for Sunday.

Munster League defeat for Seniors
28th Aug '04
Kilmoyley's Seniors made the long trip to Cork to take on St. Finbarr's on their home field. But they were to return empty handed as the Cork side took full honours winning convincingly in a scoreline of 5-15 to 3-10. (Full Match Report)

Roundup
27th Aug '04
The North Kerry Intermediate final between Kilmoyley and Ballyheigue that was due to be played this evening was called off. The Seniors were thrown out of the North Kerry championship for not fulfilling the fixture against Ballyheigue last Friday evening. Best of luck to Claire Godley of Kilmoyley who represents Ardfert/Kilmoyley in the Community Games girls U-16 long puck in Mosney this weekend.

Senior Championship semi's
25th Aug '04
The two semi-finals of the AIB County Senior Hurling Championship will be played as a double bill at Austin Stack Park , Tralee on Sunday afternoon September 5th . Kilmoyley, the holders play their neighbours St. Brendan's at 2.00 p.m. and at 3.30 p.m. Ballyheigue play Causeway.

Senior County League 25th Aug '04 Does anyone know what's happening with this year's County League? Who is leading and who is in line to get to the final? There are no tables published on the Kerry Gaa website. It's a bit pathetic that the second biggest hurling competition in the county is given so little interest! If anyone knows please let us know. The County Board have also been contacted.

Weekend Games
20th Aug'04
Apologies to any supporter who may have travelled to Lerrig to watch Kilmoyley play Ballyheigue in the quarter final of the North Kerry championship. But with both clubs in action in two weeks time, this fixture wasn't practical at the time. the Munster Senior League game against St. Finbarr's was also cancelled due to the wet conditions in Cork.

Draws for Champioship semis made
19th Aug'04
Kilmoyley will face neighbours St. Brendans Ardfert in the semi-final of the Senior championship with Ballyheigue meeting Causeway in the other semi. St Brendans had a 4-11 to 3-11 victory over Abbeydorney in the QF while Causeway easily defeated last year's beaten finalists Lixnaw by 1-12 to 0-8. It is the first time that Kilmoyley and St Brendans have met since 1990, when Kilmoyley lost out 3-16 to 1-12 after a replay in a game played in Causeway. In fact, Kilmoyley haven't beaten St. Brendan's in the championship since 1983.
No doubt, there will be plenty of hype and excitement in the parish over the next two weeks with plenty of colour on both sides of the border. Let's hope that both sets of supporters can approach the game in the most sporting possible way, and may hurling be the winner at the end of the day. Both games take place on the weekend of 3rd - 5th September.

Happy Birthday John Meyler
6th Aug'04
Kilmoyley advanced to the semi-final of the AIB County Senior hurling championship with a comprehensive 2-17 to 2-8 victory over Ballyduff at Austin Stacks Park this evening to give team trainer John Meyler a deserved birthday present. Played before a large attendance, the game never lived up to the expectation of last year's encounter and this was possibly due to nervousness on both sides. But referee Willie Barrett of Tipperary handled the game well (even if he didn't allow the game flow at times). Ballyduff were missing Pa Rourke and Jersey Houlihan, and in the end it was probably Ballyduff's lack of scoring forwards that was the difference between the teams. Shane Brick, once again had a tremendous game, scoring twelve points in total. But it was substitute Sean Maunsell that swung the game in Kilmoyley's favour, with two well taken second half goals. Mike Hennessy also received his marching orders ten minutes from time to make it easier for Kilmoyley to complete the victory. Kilmoyley's win would have been even more comprehensive only for Ballyduff being awarded a late late goal after substitute Gary O'Brien had picked the ball off the ground (even though the ref acknowleged it after the game).

But after last year's debacle, Kilmoyley can be well and truly satisfied with this victory and nobody can now deny that Kilmoyley were well and truly the better team and are now in line to join Ballyduff at the top of the table for championship wins. It was certainly a very happy birthday for John Meyler.  (Full Match Report)

Championship Fever !
4th Aug'04
With only two days to go before Kilmoyley and Ballyduff meet in the first of the 2004 AIB hurling championship quarter-finals, excitement is really building and tension is growing. As yet Kilmoyley have not named their team as there are a number of injury worries in the camp. It should be a very exciting game, and a huge crowd is expected at Austin Stack park on Friday to witness a showdown between the two most successful clubs in the county. Kilmoyley are bidding to equal Ballyduff's total number of 20 championship wins, and at the same time equal the 4-in-a-row of the Causeway team of the early 80's. Referree for the game is Willie Barrett of Tipperary, so we should expect a good sensible game.

It will be a very difficult task however and this year's championship is the most open in year's. The bookies still have Kilmoyley as favourites at 6/4 which are very short odds considering. Lixnaw are second favourites at 7/2. Ballyheigue can be backed at 4/1. Ballyduff are 5/1, Causeway 8/1, St. Brendan's and Abbeydorney are both 10/1 and Crotta are 12/1.

Munster League Games 24th July '04 Kilmoyley were due to meet Doora-Barefield of Clare next weekend in the Munster League, but following todays' drawn game between Clare and Kilkenny the game is now unlikely to go ahead as the replay will be played next Saturday. Doora-Barefield have three players on the Clare team, namely Sean McMahon, Jamesie O'Connor and Ollie Baker. Kilmoyley have only played one game to date in this competition.

More injury worries for Seniors
24th July '04
Kilmoyley have further injury worries ahead of their championship decider with Ballyduff. Along with Shane Brick who recently sustained a shoulder injury against Crotta, Eoin Sheehy and Tom Murnane will also miss the game. Eoin sustained a broken hand last week, while Tom broke a bone in his lower back. Even though Kilmoyley have the strongest Senior panel in the county, losing these players is a huge blow, and will make the task of retaining Neilus Flynn much more difficult.

County Championship quarter-finals finalised
24th July '04
Following Causeway's easy 3-18 to 2-9 victory over Kenmare in the loser's round of the championship, all four quarter-finals have been finalised. Kilmoyley of course meet Ballyduff. Crotta, following their shock victory over Causeway will play Ballyheigue. Lixnaw will meet Causeway while Ardfert take on Abbeydorney, who defeated Kenmare in the first round. The games will take place over two weekends - the 6th-8th and 13th-15th August. It is almost certain that a referree from outside the county, possibly Pat O'Connor from Limerick, will be appointed to take charge of the Championship clash with Ballyduff. It certainly would not be fair to put any of the Kerry Referrees under that much pressure, considering last years affairs.

Seniors are still in contention for County League
8th July '04
In tonights County League game Kilmoyley beat Crotta by 6-16 to 2-6 in ideal conditions at Dromakee. Kilmoyley led comfortably early on but Crotta fought back towards the end of the first half. In the end Kilmoyley's experience told with a comfortable victory that sets them up for a chance at the final after a poor start to the campaign. It was worrying to see Shane Brick leave the field near the end with a shoulder injury however, and this put a damper on the victory.

Kerry County Board July Meeting 5th July '04 The County Board has still not reached a decision on the outcome of the 2003 North Kerry hurling league final in which Kilmoyley were overturned as winners by the NK Board. A decision is however due at the next GPC meeting. The Intermediates received a bye into the semifinal of the championship, with Causeway playing Ladies Walk in the quarter final. The draw did not take place for the minor or U-21 championships. Ballyduff and Causeway will join forces for this years minor championship as neither club can field a full fifteen! Many hurling fans will be disappointed to hear that there were only 150 tickets allocated to the county for this Saturday's hurling game in Killarney between Cork and Tipperary. However, terrace tickets will be on sale at the gates.

Kilmoyley overcome Ballyduff in County League
4th July '04
Played in glorious conditions at Lerrig before a large attendance, Kilmoyley's Seniors defeated Ballyduff by 1-14 to 2-7. Both sides were at near full strength, but the standard of hurling was at times below par. It was Eddie Murphy's first time at Lerrig in his new management role as Ballyduff trainer, and he certainly had his outfir playing a better brand of hurling. But Kilmoyley managed to keep their opponents to four scores from play, which is pleasing from a Kilmoyley point of view. The teams will of course be meeting again in four weeks time in the championship.(Match Report later)

Seniors back to winning ways 20th June '04 Kilmoyley's Seniors got back to winning ways on Sunday evening with a six point win over Lixnaw in Lixnaw. Played in ideal conditions, Kilmoyley were slow to get started but were kicked into life after a goal by Micheal Regan after five minutes. Some fine long range scoring from Maurice Murnane at midfield stretched Kilmoyley's lead. Lixnaw were kept in the game with numerous frees, but John Maunsell had to make a couple of good saves near the end to maintain Kilmoyley's advantage. Final score Kilmoyley 1-15 Lixnaw 0-12.(Full Report Later)

Club PRO ties the knot
19th June '04
Congratulations to Kilmoyley hurling club's PRO TJ Maunsell who got married at the weekend to Noreen Thornton of Ahamore. TJ has won numerous medals with Kilmoyley at all levels. Kilmoyley hurling club wishes both a long and happy life together.

Munster League draw for Seniors 18th June '04 Kilmoyley earned a draw with waterford's Lismore in a very good game of hurling played at Ballyhooly, Co. Cork last Friday evening. Both teams were missing a number of regulars but the scoring was top class. The game finished Kilmoyley 0-18 Lismore 1-15. (Match Report)

Kilmoyley begin defence of Munster title
15th June '04
The Seniors travel to Ballyhooley in Cork this Friday in a bid to retain their Munster League title. Lismore of Waterford privide the opposition, but they will probably be without County players Dan Shanahan and Dave Bennett.

Former Kilmoyley hurler gets married 5th June '04 Congratulations to Raymond Brick who got married to Limerick girl Susan Pratt in Adare on saturday. Raymond was a member of the 1987 Féile na nGael team that won the All-Ireland Div. 3 title in Ennis. He also played on Kilmoyley's Junior team that defeated St. Mary's to win the club's first Junior championship title in 1997. The couple are residing in Caherconlish, Co. Limerick where Raymond hopes to win more medals!

Second title of the year for Seniors
5th June '04
Kilmoyley defeated Abbeydorney for the second time this year to win the Lee Strand sponsored 11's of Kerry for the first time. The final was a very exciting affair, with extra time required to separate the teams. In the end, it was a Shane Brick free (taken with most of the crowd jeering !) that won Kilmoyley the title. But Shane (who received the man of the match award) was also instrumental in most of Kilmoyley's scores, but he was ably assisted by Micheal Regan up front along with Colin Harris in defence and Patrick Flaherty in midfield. It was a sweet victory indeed for Kilmoyley and the great ovation given by the genuine hurling supporters at the final whistle, was indicative of the feeling that the better team won (despite the disgraceful carry on before and during the game). Well done boys!

Causeway defeated in 11's semi
3rd June '04
The Seniors easily advanced to the final of the Lee Strand 11's of Kerry with a 5-9 to 1-4 victory over Causeway in Abbeydorney. The conditions were slippery underfoot and there were many errors made, but Kilmoyley made the most of the opportunities that came their way and eased into the final. A brawl just after the interval involving all but one of the players on the field, ended with four dismissals, two from each side.

Poor performance from Seniors ends in defeat
30th May '04
Kilmoyley's Seniors had one of their poorest displays in a long time in their one point defeat to Ballyheigue last Sunday. Despite missing a number of its starting fifteen, the seasiders put in a spirited performance, and thanks to ten pointed frees from "Boxer" Slattery edged out the three times County champions in a scoreline of 1-15 to 3-8. Kilmoyley can make all the excuses, but in the end the scoreline tells its own story.

Seniors win in County League
22nd May '04
The Kilmoyley Seniors continued on their winning ways with a 4-11 to 3-9 victory over Abbeydorney at Lerrig last Saturday evening. Shane Brick was in excellent form scoring a couple of goals, and with a number of the regular first team players missing on the night, thee will certainly be strong competition for places over the coming months. Newcomer, Patrick Flaherty made his Senior competitive debut for Kilmoyley, and we wish him the very best of luck over the coming year.

Minors win County League Div 2 Title 14th May '04 Congratulations to Kilmoyley's minors who enjoyed a comprehensive victory over Kenmare this evening at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney to claim their second title in a row. Captain John Carmody accepted the cup for Kilmoyley. (More Later)

Seniors win NK League final
7th May '04
The Kilmoyley Seniors captured the first trophy of the season, when they defeated last years beaten finalists Abbeydorney in an entertaining encounter at Abbeydorney. For once two clubs in Kerry showed that Kerry hurling can be played at the highest level and it may because two top class coaches from outside Kerry were in charge ie. John Meyler and Joe Quaid. The pitch was in beautiful condition and the weather was perfect for a good game of hurling and that's what the spectator's got. On most occasions when a team scores 1-18 it would expect to win, but Kilmoyley came good in the final quarter to notch up 3-19 and claim its second win in two years (whatever the "NK Boredroom" decides). Kilmoyley's centreback Eoin Sheehy was awarded the Man of the Match award for an outstanding display by NK Vice chairman Tom Lawlor. But there were many other excellent displays from 'keeper John Maunsell, Tom Sheehy, Micheal Regan and the evergreen Christy Walsh. After a controversial year for Kilmoyley at North Kerry level it was fitting that captain Sean Griffin "regain" the Sonny Harris trophy once again for Kilmoyley.(See Photos)

Minors reach County league D.2 final
2nd May '04
The minors defeated Causeway by 5-10 to 0-5 to qualify as group winners in reaching the County League division 2 final. Kilmoyley had already qualified for the final, even before the ball was thrown in, but thanks to this win they now meet Kenmare in the final.

New York New York for Jackie 2nd May '04 Congratulations to Kilmoyley's Jackie Murnane who played at corner back for a Rest of Ireland selection in the first ever Ladies All-Stars game against the 2003 O'Neill's/TG4 Allstars at Gaelic Park New York. In what was a competitve encounter, the All-Stars finished victorious on a scoreline of 7-9 to 5-7.

Good week for Intermediates
1st May '04
Our Intermediates enjoyed two good victories this week. First was the County League clash against Lixnaw where Kilmoyley came away with a 1-14 to 1-3 victory, while on Monday they also enjoyed a 4-9 to 2-4 win over Ardfert in the semi-final of the NK League. It would certainly be a nice NK double if both teams could win.

2004 Munster Hurling League launched in Kerry
30th April '04
Reigning Munster League champions Kilmoyley hosted the launch of the 2004 Munster hurling League at Ballyroe heights hotel on Friday night. Kilmoyley have been grouped with Portroe of Tipperary, Lismore of Waterford, Cork's St. Finbarr's and Doora Barefield of Clare. The competition has been hugely benefitial to Kilmoyley who of course have reached both finals since the competition began, winning last year's decider. The competition has grown in strength once again, with most of Munster's top hurling clubs now participating.

Seniors into NK League final
30th April '04
The Kilmoyley Seniors, by defeating neighbours Ardfert on Friday night in the North Kerry League semi-final have now qualified for the final yet again. It was an easy victory for Kilmoyley who kept Ardfert to just three points for the entire game, while scoring 1-13 themselves. It will be a repeat of last year's final as Abbeydorney have also qualified. The game takes place this Friday in Abbeydorney.

Under 16s defeated in NK final 28th April '04 Kilmoyley's under 16s were beaten by Ardfert in this final.

Seniors play Ballyheigue this Friday
23rd April '04 The Kilmoyley Seniors play Ballyheigue in the North Kerry League in Lerrig this Friday at 7pm. However the intermediate clash scheduled for this Thursday with Ardfert has been postponed.

Kerry hurlers back to winning ways 17th April '04 The Kerry Senior hurlers got back to winning ways with a twelve pont victory over Roscommon at Austin Stacks park on Saturday. They have now given themselves a chance of qualifying for the final, but to do so they must defeat Westmeath next weekend by at leat eleven points. It's a tall order but with Kilmoyley's Shane Brick, James McCarthy and Colin Harris all making valuable contributions and with Darren Young waiting in the wings, kerry have every chance.

Senior player injuries 17th April '04 The Seniors have suffered an early blow this year in their bid to retain the Senior County championship title this year with the news that both Paul McCarthy and Billy Brick will not be able to play in 2004 because of injury. Paul recently had an operation on his cruciate ligament while Billy will undergo surgery at a later stage on a damaged groin. The Seniors have already been beaten twice this year already - the same number of times they were beaten in all of last year in the County. At least it's still only April.

Death of Claire Carmody Brick
16th Mar '04 It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Claire Carmody Brick at her home in Kilmoyley. Claire lost her two and a half year battle with leukaemia despite a brave effort. The hurling club held two fundraising events for Our Lady's hospital for sick children in Crumlin and the Cashel Ward at Tralee General hospital over the last couple of years. At the Kilmoyley GAA social in January 2003 a signed Kilmoyley jersey and a signed Kilkenny hurley raised €1,000 while a Christmas day football game between the locals raised over €600. The proceeds of both events were presented to Claire, who in turn was delighted to pass on the funds. Claire was diagnosed shortly before the County hurling final in 2001 - Kilmoyley's first win in 30 years. But Claire's diagnosis did not prevent her from singing at the post match celebration. Claire will be sadly missed by all those who had the pleasure and privelege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.

2nd Mar '04 GAA President Sean Kelly has said he is disappointed at the Government's failure to respond to a GPA proposal to include GAA players in the tax break scheme which applies to professional sports people.Despite presenting a detailed submission, the prosposal was knocked on the head by the Government. This led to the GPA issuing an angry statement last Friday, claiming that GAA players were being badly ignored by the Government. The GPA threatened to stage a protest outside the Dail, but it is believed they will explore other avenues in an effort to maintain the pressure on the Government instead.

In backing the GPA's call for a players' tax incentive, Kelly said: “Obviously, it's a complex area and, while the GPA were happy that they had made a good case, the Department of Finance are the final arbiters in these matters.“We would probably need to have a committee to look into the whole situation from a GAA perspective, but you would like to think that something could be done for players who contribute so much to Irish life.”Meanwhile, Kelly remains intent on re-structuring the GAA's official Players' Committee, despite the absence of any real movement on the matter in almost a year.
